NTC or JRTC or Holenfels

What did you like or dislike about your experience(s) there?

I was stationed at Ft Irwin for 2 yrs as the OPFOR and been to JRTC twice in my career.

I was stationed at Polk for 5 years.... You begin to LOVE JRTC after a while. It becomes a second home.

NTC was not so bad. I loved the food trucks. I did not like JRTC. It was Humid and the town there was pretty small. I have family and the New Orleans area and still don't like LA. I would take NTC any day. Plus Vegas is near buy.

I was supposed to go to all three but every time I have avoided them by mission change, OBC, budget cuts. Go figure. So really no idea until (knock on wood) I go to Germany next year.

You guys are going to hate me for this..... Would you believe that I have been on active duty for almost 21 years, in the Reserves and Guard for 5 years, stationed in Germany for two years, and stationed at Fort Bragg for about 15 years total, and I have only been to JRTC once and NTC once? Never even been to Hohenfels! Get this, when I went to NTC, I worked in the SOTF S-3 so I got to stay in the big dome. When I went to JRTC, I went as an observer, and I only went out into the box once for about 2 hours. So to answer your question, I really liked the Starbucks at NTC, and Leesville, LA doesn't have enough stuff to do at night. LOL

I did old school NTC (regimental sized force on force) right before we deployed (summer of 2002) when I was with 3ACR. It was excellent training for what we did in the early stages of OIF1. RSO&I procedures were accurate. So was convoy training and jumping and establishing our base cluster. Once things settled down into the "occupation" mode however, we were pretty much making things up as we went along....

What was even cooler was our rotation was followed by 2ACR, so they had an "Sweet 16" gathering between the ACR regiments.

I''ve been to all three. What I didn't like most about NTC is we did not bring our own equipment, but had to draw from the motor pool there. They were older and earlier models of what he had at home station. CMTC (Hohenfels) had the worst weather and most mud. Never really had any opinion on JRTC.

I prefer Hohenfels because Gasthaus Zum Hirschen is my favorite restaurant and it is found in Parsberg. 10 minute cab ride.
