NY to spend $42 Million on NYC Housing Authority Security. Will this help curb crime, or would this funding be better used elsewhere?

New York state will spend $42 million on security cameras and other equipment designed to reduce crime at New York City Housing Authority developments.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the funding commitment on Friday. It's part of $477 million included in the state budget for the Housing Authority. The security upgrades will include interior and exterior lighting, intercoms, external doors and gunfire detection sensors.
Cuomo says New York Police Department figures show shootings and robberies at city housing developments were up between Jan. 1 and Oct. 11 compared to the same period last year. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says the funding is critical to supporting the safety and well-being of the 400,000 people who live in city housing developments.
