Would we prefer he keep promises he made before he was aware of the tactical situation and receiving daily briefs? Or would we prefer he do what is tactically and technically required for the situation?
Only an idiot would keep a misguided promise in the face of evidence that it's a poor idea...

Sgt Tom Cunnally In the army we had a way to describe it. Embrace the suck. He made a good decision to keep troops there. Now if he had only made it in Iraq we would not be going back....again.

SFC James Sczymanski - Obama announced the end of the Afghan war with similar fanfare last spring, saying it was time for the U.S. to "turn the page" on more than a decade of deadly conflicts. But his remarks at the time also foreshadowed the difficulties he would face in fulfilling that pledge.
"Americans have learned that it's harder to end wars than it is to begin them," he said.

SGT William Howell - Yes he made the right informed decision. We keep blaming him for Iraq but the fact the Iraqi govt demanded the right to prosecute our military personnel was the deal breaker.

MAJ James Woods Agreed, now them jack legs are begging us to come back. Still wondering why we gave it back. They owe us about 500 million barrels of oil.

Well what are his military advisors and Commanders in theater saying? We blame him for Iraq but it was Bush who set the time table and the Iraqi govt that refused out conditions for staying. We obviously don't want Afghanistan to revert to turmoil but if we withdrew and ISIS grabs a foothold wouldn't we be bashing Obama for not leaving and troops as advisors to prevent that? It's a political no win situation; yet I'm tired of the US being the world police.

Yep, it never ends. Just enough troops to be able to claim he's engaged and contributing, yet not near enough to be successful. We will follow the same Nixon "Vietnamization" play-book, with the same results. Hole up in your bunkered firebase and wait for your tour to be over. While the CinC claims success.

Col Joseph Lenertz I could not agree more. 5500 troops will not be able to do much, especially if they are kept on training bases hunkered down.

Col Joseph Lenertz Agreed - let's hope its not to late for the next POTUS to do the right thing! Finish the mission with the right amount and bolster additional support from the lost allies!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs yes, hope so. Unfortunately, I have no confidence he will change his policy position. He will ride out his term with status quo.
