Opinion as policy

I've noticed a growing trend amongst my seniors and peers to enforce what they believe is right over what is actual regulation and policy. Most of the time it's done under the premise of "Well when I was a young soldier I had to xxxxx...."

I can honestly say it bothers me and even when I talk to the leader to the side in regards to them teaching this soldier their opinion under the guise of "policy", I get told that that's how they think it should be.

I understand teaching discipline and expecting more from our soldiers but there has to be a point when we stop with the "monkey see monkey do" and adhere to the standards that actually exist.

You just hit on one of my absolute largest pet peeves.... As they say in MRT, this topic is an "iceberg" for me..

I for one have experience this and how it creates confusion in the lower enlisted. I hear soldiers afraid to take initiative and do things because they heard something contrary once before.

Standards and regulations are essential. One day, we'll all be out of the military. Regs will fade and be of no concern...we'll have our character, or sadly for some, lack there of.

"I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage."

So when a reg conflicts with morals...what does one do?
