I'm currently an AIT instructor at Ft. Lee for Wheeled Vehicle Mechanics, and I have submitted a Warrant Officer Application for 915A (Automotive Maintenance Warrant Officer), I'm just curious to see if any other NCOs have decided to take this career path, and what was your motivating factor to do so?

At one time I wasn the fence about becoming a Warrent Officer, until I went to SLC and became discussed with the NCO Corp. I had seen it in the 101st but only thought it was an isolated problem, but it wasn't. while in SLC I seen a lot of " do as I say, not as I do"; along with throughing fellow peers under the bus for personal gain. That was the moment I knew I would stay and NCO and do my best to rid the NCO corp and army of NCO's and soldier with that mind set. Too often to I see good NCO's either through in the towel and get out or go Warrent. I do not knock anyone who wants to go warrent, but for me I'm gonna stay the NCO path and do my best to keep only the best ordnance soldier and get rid of the rest.

I respect your thoughts on this subject. I dont think it has so much to do with "throwing in the towel" so to speak, as it does with some individuals striving to challenge themselves and take a broadening career path. I truly have enjoyed the 8 years ive been in the Army, and the 5 years as an NCO, but I also want to challenge myeelf to make an impact on organizations throughout my career at the technical level.

SSG Isacc, by no means do I believe no NCO should go warrent we need good Techs in our shop but we also need good NCO's. I do not look down on any of my peers for changing path. What I had experienced in SLC only made the path to stay an NCO that much easier.

SSG, Good luck to you on your packet. I just arrived at Lee to be an AIT PSG. I am considering putting in a packet but I cannot seem to make up my mind- head versus heart, if that makes sense. So why are you putting in your packet?

Well welcome to Ft. Lee...this is definitely a place that you have to approach with a certain mindset to be successful. A lot of NCOs don't desire to be here, but your experience is what you make it is what I always say. I decided to go Warrant because i had a lot of influence from the warrant corps from the time I was a young NCO until now. I love training and mentoring soldiers, but I also enjoy learning and being able to do my job with little to no distractions. And as an NCO you are always going to be in a position where you will have distractions. I've seen the headaches that 1SGs deal with and senior NCOs, and that just doesn't appeal to me, if that makes sense.

Makes sense. I had this conversation last night. It's the headaches that 1SGs deal with that make me want to stay. Crazy, I know. 98% can be avoided/prevented but mentorship does not roll downhill and THAT is a major factor in the problems. I'll be SMA one day... maybe :)
