We are very rural and do have a VFW, but I haven't volunteered for anything with them (I have not been involved with them since moving back home). But I have been working with other Veterans organizations to get Veterans services in our area. A mentoring program, trabsportation to VA apppointments, referrals, and a just a basic information point. Our county doesn't even have a Walmart. Or anything really commercial for that matter. But we have a Starbucks. I never let one die alone. After calling time of death my second call is to the Medical examiner. If they were veterans I discussed the need autopsy and disease or condition that lead to the death. If a veteran dies of a service connected condition their family needs that documentation to get benifits they are entitled to. It's a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that honors and assists Veterans and active Warfighters in need. We've been very blessed to have been able to give back and assist our brothers and sisters-in-arms literally from coast to coast, from California all the way up to Virginia and other east coast areas. To me, it's not about getting recognition for any one person, group, or organization. It's actually much simpler than that. My personal view is, "If we don't take care of each other as Warfighters, then who will?"
