PCSing to 2BCT, 101st Airborne - What info can you share?

I'm PCSing from Ft Benning, where I have been a Drill Sergeant. I have orders to 2BCT 101st. Without compromising opsec, provide me with as much info as possible. I am currently waiting on a sponsor and I have spoke with the BDE CSM. Any info at all would be helpful. Where to live, should I go to air assault school here or wait until I get there.

Housing depends; I recommend off post, however, traffic sucks as you can imagine in every post. I don't know much about the brigades but I can tell you, there's a lot to do here outside the military, outdoors, indoor activities, and you also have Nashville an hour away if you're into country music and bars.

I believe in Brigades you have to be Air Assault to be in a leadership position. With that being said, go to Air Assault school here, this is the home of Air Assault and you get to have some folks from your Bgde come out for your graduation, which can be motivating for some.

I recommend going to air assault before you get here because soon as you arrive to fort Campbell, that will be the first place you go before anything.

I left 1-502 back in July. It's a decent unit, and having air assault wings will make things easier on you since it is almost a requirement in the BDE to have them to be considered a leader.

Complete AA school before you get there. Ensure that you use all the tools of finding available housing, schools in Clarksville. SSG Lawerence Johnson,

You're going to the best BDE in the Army! There's nothing more dangerous then a black heart! I was there from 2006-2009 my information won't be as up to date but hopefully helpful. I suggest to live in Tennessee, avoid Oak Grove and Hopkinton. Tiny town is great place to look as well as Riverside. If you're looking for something nice, manageable and dependent my buddy owns property out there that he rents and I believe it'll be open by your PCS. I would also suggest going to Air assault school while at benning, it'll be one less hurtle and opens up opportunity for the following:
-SPIES and FRIES
-Rappel Master
-Airborne School
-Pathfinder School
As well as PRC and Ranger School.

If your looking for nice housing I would live on the Tennessee side. The housing on post is not to bad either. I was at ft Campbell last year and they were still pushing hard to get people through air assault school. So just in case I would say be prepared to go within a few weeks of getting to your unit. I went To Air Assault School at Campbell I recomend you do it as well, and as soon as you are done with Air Assault put in for Pathfinder. they are at the same place and are well worth going to. I wanted to go to Pathfinder but they wanted to keep those spots open for NCO's. And it is up to you but I lived in Clarksville and it was a great place for me and my family.

Hey SSG Johnson, I've been at strike for about 4 years now. First off, if you can get AASLT there, I would definitely get it there. If you come here without it, you will immediately go to the school and lose valuable time with your squad because you will be in school. In this brigade, you have to be AASLT to remain in a leadership position which should not be a big deal for you. On where to live.... Housing on post for E-6 and up is fantastic, they offer flat rates and move in bonuses. Off post is excellent as well because there are plenty of nice rentals that range from 5-20 minutes away from the base. Just get on realtor.com and Zillow to get a good idea on what the price range is for the style of house that you can get. Most places off of tiny town road are pretty good. Other than that, get ready for a good amount of field time and training. We have been to JRTC three times this year either as a CTC rotation or support. So just have that in mind and you will be good to go. If you have any other specific questions let me know and welcome to the strike BDE!
