President Roosevelt identified more than a 100 years ago the danger of man's self centered nature leading us down a path where the citizen was more conscious of their rights than of their duties and how we are blind to our own shortcomings, especially in this matter.

Many today, do not even understand that this Nation is still a republic and most do not even understand what this means or why it is important? How do we of the New World return our citizens to an understanding of the vital role of 'citizenship' and its vital role in governing by for and of the people. In short, how do we return power to 'We the People' before it is too late, or have we already crossed that threshold?

Simply, Sir, being a citizen to me means just working hard and paying your taxes and trying to raise a good family. I know not all can Serve in the Armed Forces and even fewer of us have fought, but citizenship to me is a privilege and should be cherished and honored. People who burn our flag and show up with signs I consider disgraceful at funerals of our KIAs disgust me. I know Free Speech isn't for just the stuff I agree with. Probably gonna rub someone wrong with that. I just LOVE those old bikers (many vets I'm sure) who get between the families at the funerals and that Westboro crowd. I got a little off topic, but I think citizenship is hopefully for all who want to do right, love our country, cherish the freedoms we have and support out military, Government& authorities (when they are right) and are willing to take part and try to fix things when things are not right. Major. Hegseth: My question is this recently I read and article on a Marine and Soldier of Mexican descent one served in the Iraqi war one served in the Vietnam war, after they served this country in the military, they were not given citizenship status and taken down to a border town in Texas by a bus and told to run for you life, although they were allowed back in to use the VAMC, but all medications would have to be mailed to Mexico, for them. My feelings are if you served in war in this country, and want to live here that status should be granted.

My father was a World War II area veteran. My uncle served in the Army from 1949 to 1979 with time in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. I served in the Army for 23 years. Today I am a Scoutmaster who teaches Citizenship Merits Badges. My scouts have to - "Explain what citizenship in the nation means and what it takes to be a good citizen of this country. Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of a responsible and active American citizen." We have good citizens out there. I see them everyday. I served as a broadcast journalist in the Army for most of my career. I am disappointed in our national media. There are no good news stories anymore. At best we get to see a cute kicker at the end of the newscast about a panda playing in the snow. I know that good news doesn't sell advertisements. Show me the patriots out there. Show the nation. Show the world.

The speech in itself speaks on what made America and even other soverign countries, great - their people and the people's will and drive to improve - through character and hard work.

I'm assuming that this topic is in relation to the immigration issue that we are currently dealing with here within the US and as well as our force projection around the globe?

If my assumptions are correct - then my questions would be as follows:

- Immigration: This obviously is a key issue for the upcoming election and has significant second and third order effects - regardless of the decision of the next president's actions. If you were a cabinet member on the next president's staff - what advice would you give him/her on how to structure the immigration reform (or do we just maintain what we currently have and actually enforce laws?)?

Troop Strength & Force Projection: If you were the SecDef for the next president - 1) What would you recommend in regards as to the "proper" number of troops? Those of us that have been in long enough to serve under three presidents (or more) and for those who have served before us and served under three plus presidents - have all seen the fluctuation of troop levels according to whomever is in the white house. 2) How would you help the next president see the world in terms of force projection? Currently, we have conventional troops in several countries , conducting a myriad of tasks and operations - mostly falling under the "advise and assist" model in some sort or fashion, and we have SOF in even more countries, conduction a myriad of SOF tasks as well, with their host nation brethren. Some people see it as the US is to involved with foreign affairs and others see it as a form of conflict mitigation/prevention, by identifying countries who have been susceptible or are vulnerable to internal/external influence of the violent extremist organizations. What direction would you urge the next president to take?

Wow, I see restating the same sentiment makes everything better.
What is citizenship? A legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized.
So, once a citizen, what obligations does one have to maintain citizenship?
None.

This thought process does not address any core principles, it gives some people an Atta Boy and creates a lengthy band wagon train following it. Do well through your actions to be an upstanding citizen and do not judge another by their misdeeds but rather pick up the slack and work harder for what you believe.

That is a loaded question. Takes in so much.

First off, you must be citizen in the legal sense to be able to "qualify" from the get-go. No matter how loyal you are, unless you are natural born or naturalized, you are not a citizen. Oddly, according to our laws, we even have categories of citizens. A natural born citizen being the highest of these. Each category comes with its own privileges.

Within each of the categories, you have those that are good citizens and those that are not. We even have those that might have been a natural born citizen but loose rights and privileges. Committing a crime may change your citizenship status. I remember stories of major criminals in WWII who were patriots and wanted to help in the war effort with their family and business contacts in Italy. We sometimes get being a good citizen and being a patriot mixed up since many of the same components are contained in each.

A good citizen starts as a person who has a love of country just as we have love for one another. As a republic, our country belongs to "We the People" and not to a single dictator, royalty, or group of leaders. It is this love of country that has often led to revolts against the leadership.

A good citizen is a person who lives within the laws established while at the same time challenges laws that not in the best interest of all. People who do not obey the laws are subject to being punished, and can even loose many Constitutional Rights as their category of citizenship lowered. Others find that civil disobedience is a path that becomes necessary and can actually improve the quality of life for many, as in the Civil Rights Movement.

A good citizen is a person who participates and votes in every election. Failure to do so shows a lack of concern.

A good citizen shows respect for the American Flag and stands tall when the Anthem is played. Something that is lacking at ballgames all over the country.

A good citizen is a person who will step up and do what they can when the country is in threatened. This does not mean joining the military to fight the enemy alone. Many can do other things which supports the countries efforts.

Being a good citizen has many, many points. From I read in the introduction and in some of the points, citizenship is one thing. Patriotism is another but the two can cross over and touch one another.

Good luck outlining your paper. There are many, many individual points that need to be included. Many of those points are going to cause a great number of people to get angry such as my point about ballgames.

I think I will ask the question on my FB page and see what my community has to say. I may post some of those answers to you later.

Historically- it seemed obvious to be Patriotic and want to serve your country, but we seem to have veered of course. I am fortunate to be born, by the grace of God, in the best place, in the history of this planet. I am one of many in my family tree that have the priviledge to call themselves a citizen of the United States of America. With that priviledge comes responsibilities to ensure future generations have the honor of citizenship in this great nation. But, we have been hijacked by forces that would deny the priviledge to those who will follow us. Many of the rights, we members of this forum, have fought for and our ancestors have died defending are being eroded, one by one. We sit on the precipious of losing our rights and the rights of our children and grandchildren if we do not act to change the current climate. How we do that, only time will tell. I have my own ideas, but they may be too radical for many to understand, but the Founders saw similar ideas as the only solution to free themselves from the yolk of tyranny.

In response to the question of citizenship the first thing we need to do is to secure our borders and deport every illegal and their U.S. born children as they are not citizens due to the fact that their parents are not citizens and have no rights here in the United States. This democratic administration has done everything to undermine the constitution and subvert the laws by executive orders that are unconstitutional to the point of even making treaties with countries that are openly anti U. S. and giving foreign aide to countries that openly support terrorism even hiring people that are on the no fly list as personnel advisers. Then lying to the people and not reacting to the invasion of U. S. territories ie the U S Embassy in BenGhasi and allowing the people responsible get away with it and ordering the military to stand down allowing American citizens to be brutally killed by terrorist in a planned and organized strike. The then secretory of state also being allowed to use a private server to pass classified documents in an open format for any of these actions we the people would have been immediately thrown into prison and charged with treason and espionage. We the people need to take our country back from big government place term limits on all elected officials of not more than 2 terms in any office not allowing them to exempt themselves from laws of the land, or voting themselves pay raises, no lifetime pay for members of congress. The members of congress to be paid only while in session and their pay to be equal to that of the typical soldier that they are holding down. The cease of all foreign aide payments to any country that is in any way connected with terrorism, that is openly anti U. S. the removal of the United Nations from U. S. soil and stop all payments to that organization which is trying to subvert our way of life and laws. The cuts that I have stated would allow for the deposit to be paid off and for our military to be funded properly for the indefinite future allowing all of our equipment to be brought up to combat readiness and for much needed restructure of the Veterans Administration allowing our veterans to have the care that they deserve. We the citizens of this Great Nation need to stand together and tell this administration that it is We the People that run this country not some group of overpaid bureaucrats who think that they are above the law and think that they know what is best for this country and each and everyone of our true citizens. This country was founded on Christian values which are under attack from this administration allowing the few to control the many each and every state has the right to enforce the laws that were voted on by the citizens of the state and signed into law by the governor of said state Ie... marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman not whoever or what ever thinks that they have rights above the laws prescribed by the state. The allowing of openly LGBT personnel to serve in the military which has undermined the UCMJ and the allowance of women into elite military Units such as the Rangers where each member relies on the strength of the man next to him where women do not have the strength to carry a 200 lb man plus all the gear that they are required to carry in the case of emergency the administration has made the military a jjoke among the other nations of the world. Not to mention that this administration is subverting the laws by bringing in and forcing states to accept so called refugees that are no more than Muslim extremist into this country and leaving the christian population trying to become refugees to be slaughtered by terrorist. I and others that have served in the military have made it clear that this country in great danger not from the outside but from the inside( the liberal left, and the liberal media). We the people need to stand up and say enough is enough and take back our country my oath states that I will defend this nation from all enemies both foreign and domestic and the liberal left is the enemies of this great nation

I have been considering not re-enlisting due to how the military is today from all the political changes our country has gone through. The extreme downsizing and the major financial cutbacks to our military has put my financial needs in a strain. Seeing how our country has been drastically changed so much over the last 10years and the influx in immigration to our country has greatly affected the way our service men and women survive in and out of the military. What support do have? by that question I'm not looking for a political answer.

If the highest level of citizenship, and the right to vote were a franchise, limited to those willing to lay their lives on the line, be it military service, law enforcement, fire and rescue, or whatever, we, as a nation, would be better off. ADD to that, that honorable service in our military once was, and should be a guaranteed path to full citizenship. As it is, the sheep are voting to be fat lazy sheep, and let the government take care of them. Since the sheep far outnumber veterans, they get the benefits and help they want, while we suffer.

Even now, within the VA and government benefits systems, the system is rigged in many ways. I served during the Cold War, and sit at 60% Service Connected disability, with 100% Individual Unemployability. My younger brother was wounded in combat and gets 100% SC plus civillian medical coverage, plus Social Security, yet, at 100% Disability for unemployability, guaranteed I will never legally work again, I 'make too much' to qualify for any Social Security benefits. Veterans with personality disorders are often turned away from earned services, as well.

Many books have been written on how to be a good citizen, and how to return civilizations to greatness.

1) If you plan to run for office, why would I have any belief that you were doing anything to make things better for those that actually have served, rather than becoming another self-serving politician?
2) Since it's a matter of timing and/or location/MOS, rather than anything else, how would you ensure that our peace-time and non-combat veterans and service members are still equal in the system, to those with combat service?
3) Illegal aliens and welfare-'queens' can ride the system and afford fancy cars, fine clothes and be fat and properous, while we have brothers and sisters in arms dying on the streets. How are you and your book going to make a difference?

When growing up, I earned my Citizen Merit badge in Scouts. At our meetings we pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. I recited this in school, scouts and many other places. Many just recite the pledge, but have they listened and understood the words and what it means. Many places won't allow you to recite the pledge, because it might offend someone. It offends me when people do not recite the pledge, it's part of our culture as American Citizens, it's who we are, which I am proud of. The same goes for our National Anthem. Many people sing the lyrics at an events, but have they listened to the words and understand what Francis Scott Key was wrote about? When oversees, every time I looked at the American Flag, I thought of Francis Scott Key and how proud he must have felt to see the flag standing after continuous bombardment from the night before.
Being an American citizen means pride, strength, loyalty and being the best at everything we do. My hats off to the men and women of the greatest Military in the world who volunteer and will sacrifice
their lives just because they American citizens.

We certainly can't all get a job on TV, run for public office, or give up our jobs and volunteer to help homeless Vets every day, but setting a great personal example and "giving back" to our nation is what I consider being a good citizen. I get most of that from being an Army Brat and the rest from my 27 years in the USAF, and I continue to serve all of you in the FAA.

These are actually two very different questions. Regarding citizenship and our responsibilities and rights as citizens. We have different kinds of rights, some are natural rights, some are constitutional rights and some are legislative rights. They aren't all the same. Natural rights are the rights all humans have by virtue of being born, regardless of where they are born. Constitutional rights we have as Americans regardless of what state we live in. Legislative rights are legal rights we have that are subject to the authority of the court or legislative body which gave us the right.

On top of that we have the ability to do things which aren't necessarily a right to do the activity.

To many people fail to understand the difference between the rights and a right and an ability, which in conjunction with not understanding that we are a Republic and how a Republic actually works have corrupted the system. We have a government that doesn't understand the difference between rights and ability and a citizenry that thinks it has a right to do whatever it wants regardless of how it might effect someone else's right. People claim the right of free speech while throwing rocks and bottles at others for exercising their freedom of speech. In the name of diversity we have become exclusionary. Diversity should be empowering inadequately represented groups to obtain greater representation. We have failed at this mission. Instead of empowering others we have begun to restrict over represented groups in order to make numbers match.

Regarding the government

We the people are the government. We elect representatives, not rulers. We fought a revolution to obtain home rule, but we have developed a citizenry which is more concerned with what other countries think about us than what is best for us. We have a media that screams and shames us for loving our country and has made exceptionalism a bad word. How can we expect other countries to respect us when we aren't allowed to respect ourselves. We should absolutely believe the country we live in is better than every other country. If we don't then we need to be doing something to fix our country or move.

People scream about a popular vote for president which is completely the opposite of a Republic. There is a reason states are called states and other countries have provinces. Provinces are ruled by the central government. States rule the central government and when the central government step outside its authority the states have a responsibility to put it in its place.

I am a principal at a grades 5-12 school. My students, many of them, are raised in households that neglect positive citizenship. How can you assist , through your book or lectures, educators with cultivating a rich arena where the environment is based on the citizens and not the citizen? We must find a way as a nation to define productive citizenship.

I don't believe we have crossed that threshold, however we are very close, our population has been made ignorant of what citizenship in a Republic truly is, do I believe it's by design? Of course I do. What can we do to change this tide and return power to citizens? We have to motivate them properly to become involved, get educated and act like they ARE in charge of government once again....I believe we can accomplish that by acting like the capitalists that we are born to be in this nation. We have to help them believe and understand that they will become prosperous again if they are willing to put in the work. That starts with a military and veteran population that don't bow to the pc crowd and social experiments being visited upon us today by the socialist in the White House. Why do I love military men? Because they are an elite group who learn as young men that there is something bigger than themselves out there.....therefore this mission begins on our knees in prayer to our God....who by the way is no longer allowed mention in our military.......the ranks should be rising in total rebellion over this......

As you are a retired Commissioned Officer, My question is about the role as every military or former military (never really get the former part) member that has ever sworn the oath. When do we as a group ever give up following the unlawful orders of the government we have sworn to defend? That is the biggest issue I see to this country getting back to what it was, along with eliminating Political Correctness from everyday life. If we can do those two things, we can become that shining city on the hill again.

Citizenship is a concept basically rooted in the idea of social contract. A person can be a citizen of the world, a particular nation, state, city, town, and neighborhood. Each human has to balance the rights and duties of being a citizen of these entities in their own particular way. In turn, as part of the social contract, these entities have duties and obligations to their citizens. The Founding Fathers in essence believed in the Enlightenment concept of the Natural Rights of Man. Other nations, states, and governing bodies do not. Some assert that citizens are basically subservient to the needs of the state. Some entities govern by pure force, others by deception, speaking platitudes but engaging in corruption.That sets up a situation of conflict. Thus, the interpretation of citizenship is influenced by external forces, also, that can encroach on the Natural Rights of Man, and even the principles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. One of the more extreme examples is genocide, where a government literally kills a select portion of its own citizens. The psychological studies of psychologist Dr. Stanley Milgram revealed that even ordinary citizens are capable of shocking cruelty, if encouraged by a entity perceived as legitimate. Thus, it is extremely important that the governing entity, whatever form it takes, actually be a legitimate entity. By extension, it follows that legitimate governments would follow a rule of law, which would be perceived by its own citizens, and even citizens of other entities, to be rooted in the concept of Justice. By studying the history of the Roman Empire, one can get a sense of the many forms citizenship has taken in the past. Becoming a Roman citizen was once a prized event. Towards the end of the Empire, Rome's own citizens behaved in a way that undermined their own civilization. Those examples are still relevant today. Sic transit, gloria mundi.

I am unfamiliar with this particular speech, but I do know TR actively pursued a progressive agenda that could rival Bernie Sanders. TR had a great reverence for the public, and for nature, and was only a conservative in the natural conservation sense. He was all about ending monopolies and putting the brakes on the robber barons of the day, in order to foster true competition which is the lifeblood of capitalism. Of course, service in uniform is the ultimate in good citizenship because a person is willing to place their life on the line to serve and protect their fellow citizens. TR believed that, and lived it.

I have been asked to respond to Major Hegseth's post...Citizens at home...This is a tough one. Many will read my post and not agree but...From Government corruption to Military waste, it's hard to be a Citizen at home. Look at the Presidential race.....They're all crooks in one form or another. Accepting big campaign contributions for nothing in return? ya right....So many Government entities wasting money....Studies of the mating habits of an Ecuadorian Tree Beetle???? Really???? (That was fake, but there are studies just as absurd happening) Contractors bilking the government for billions of dollars, most linked back to a Government official somewhere who owns the contracting company. Cheney ring a bell? Blowing budget monies just to insure the same or larger budget next year....I heard of waste in unheard of proportions at West Point leaving perishable goods out beyond safe times only to throw them away. Delivery trucks leaving with more goods than they came with, and Cadets not receiving what they deserve. I heard of a business in Newburg Ny being totally funded by goods from West Point for 15 years.... Crooks everywhere....If the budget didn't get spent, they wouldn't get it next year. Our Military will never be as strong as it was in WWII. Soldiers then were led by Generals who didn't have their hands tied, they could make strategic decisions and carry them out. Now days you have to make sure it's politically correct, and won't hurt anybody's feelings before you can make a decision to attack a position. Known bad guys run into a masque and you can't chase and attack... Would have been rubble if Patton or MacArthur was in charge. I seriously believe we could never win a war again
Budget cuts and benefit cuts to the Military, eliminating retirements as we know them... Might want to start learning Chinese or Russian real soon. We're melting down from within and there ain't a damn thing the "Citizen at home can do about it....The future is one of entitlement, kids now days, gangs now days....If you have they want it. They don't want to work for it, but they expect you to give it to them or they take it.
I really think "Preppers" are way ahead of the game... Sorry, that's my rant....

I must admit as I read some of these responses I am amused to see that such a high proportion are from old farts like me bitching about the younger generation. Take a knee for a minute, fellas, and have a listen. The older generation before you said the EXACT same things about YOU! "Lazy, good for nuthin, will amount to nothin WHIPPERSNAPPERS!!!!"

It did not bear out then and it will not bear out now. The youth irritates us because they are inexperienced and dumb. We try to warn them, but they know what is best and they just sprint right out into the open and get nailed for their assery. The world is a bad ol place, and it has a way of barking some knuckles into shape when needed.

I can just say one thing: I wish like hell I was as smart now as I was then!

To start with we need to refocus on the education system. No one watched them and the liberals took over. Professors who had never done anything in real life indoctrinated the young and it spread down to the Pre School teachers and hence the children. They do not learn the 3 R s or History or Patriotism but Political garbage. 2nd we need to clean the nation's political system from self serving, lying individuals to those with morals and values. We need to do as they did with the Wigs and Torries and begin anew. 3rd we need to put the flags and Christianity back in the system and do as a few countries do. You are welcome here but you adopt or respect our values as we respect yours. The Federal government is supposed to be an umbrella to protect the citizens and hence a combined military for that protection. The states should handle their own more localized issues and not big brother. We have become a nation of citizens dumbed down, contributing to a bureaucracy that is only concerned about itself.

So that is great your saying your a citizen lets rally for our rights and freedoms and the liberty of our pursuit of the American Dream. I do think we need to be able to be for our country since we are living, working, and trying to build it to another level. My questions are few but they open so many doors that are slammed in the American Citizens faces. Why are we not taking care of our military personnel, I mean VA or homelessness, those who served and now are trash to the curb. You get farther by being corrupt then you do following the rules it is proven through the VA scandals and the bottom line lack of care, treatment, or respect of our veterans. What about poverty and those who working mass hours just to barely make it what about us. Why is there not more going into our education system you leave the blame to the teachers to educate these young people however you provide limited services to accomplish the task. I wont even go into the whole equal rights with gender or the changing and their identity and what they should get. Bottom line if Women or Men treated properly and dignity then that is what should happen. I mean there is issues with sex trafficking and slavery of foreign children, what are we doing about it. Not to mention the fact we talk about guns, violence, abuse, corruption however what are we doing about it? Lets take care of our citizens who are following the laws and process to be here and live the American Dream. Instead we are allowing all these people who didn't follow those rules to be here the ability to stay here without question and identification because we don't want to offend anyone, come on the rest of us follow the laws so why are they exempt. If you want to be a citizen follow the rules and do something productive to give back to society do you part. Not sure who kept messaging me to respond but really feeling are going to get hurt because I believe you need to be a productive piece of society and follow the rules if not what good is it to have you here? Now as far as the gender identity and the ethical questions on race one question as a citizen what are you doing to give back to the society where you are at? Violence, killing, murder, rape, stealing, fighting, bulling, or are you helping your neighbors, got a job, going to school, not committing crimes so that is my question as to the American Citizen what are you doing we have enough people who want to harm US Citizen why are we doing this to each other. Lets act like we are kind and decent human beings with a God given purpose to better to others then we are. So that is just my thoughts. Have a great day and help someone today. You are never to late to make changes but if you do not change then society will change things for you and then you are going to have to make a choice. What is the purpose to being a citizen?

I believe an important quote to maintaining our republic from the speech is this:
"But the average man must earn his own livelihood. He should be trained to do so, and he should be trained to feel that he occupies a contemptible position if he does not do so; that he is not an object of envy if he is idle, at whichever end of the social scale he stands, but an object of contempt, an object of derision."
Though I believe that we should give a hand up to those in need, we should require those that are able bodied to both work and train for jobs that will sustain them for the help they receive. Unfortunately, because we don't, we have far too many able bodied people dependent on the Government who vote only for those that promise more handouts. We also have politicians who give handouts in return for votes without any regard for the detrimental consequences that arise. We have been fighting the "war on poverty" the same way for years and it only gets worse. We need to invest in strategies that will actually help the impoverished take care of themselves instead of placating them with handouts so they will continue to vote for the party that gives them...

I think that citizenship is paying your FAIR SHARE and not bitching about it. When you are tempted to bitch about it then think about all those crappy roads that you like to drive on, and the mediocre schools your children attend. I think citizenship is seeing that paying your taxes offers something more than a grumble under your breath- A VOICE. Citizenship means USING that voice. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND VOTE. Get in touch with your elected officials and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE when they give away the good roads and schools to the people who are already fabulously wealthy. BE HEARD- be a gadfly- protest! Like it or not, fellas, the constitution STILL allows free assembly. I am startled at the sheer number of peaceful protests (not HURTING others- perhaps. Irritating them, but not HURTING them) being broken up and the people protesting getting beaten and pepper sprayed. I gotta tell you, I think that citizenship is maybe hating like hell what the protestors stand for (I'd like to see those westborough freaks buried UNDER the jail) but being willing to die for their RIGHT to say whatever disgusting old thing their little heart desires. I agree with some here who say free speech is not an absolute. Free speech is not facing prosecution and governmental abuse based on something you SAY or PROTEST. However, it is not allowed to yell fire in a theater. It is not ok to slander others- a very slim definition that few people understand. EMPLOYERS are not obligated to observe free speech. Only governmental institutions do.

Being a citizen means looking out for your neighbors just as you would one of your own. Being a citizen is viewing yourself as a larger group that cannot accomplish a thing w/o the other citizens. When we withdraw into our own little spider holes and do not take part in civil life then we are not being good citizens.

Someone used the example of the Flint water crisis earlier. Now THAT is an outstanding example of gov't OVER REACH. I live in Michigan. How many of you out in the other states know that our governor has instituted a "rule by fiat" approach to struggling cities and towns? Did you know that he regularly APPOINTS "city managers" to over rule the local elected officials and take action without citizen input or objections? Did you know that in many cities LIKE FLINT the local officials are little more than figureheads? They can vote and debate ALL DAY LONG, and these "city managers" can do whatever they please with public funds, regulations, and other governmental programs? That they need not get ANY approval from anyone else for their choices because they have been given COMPLETE power to run those cities and towns? How about that? Well, the people of Michigan said- "mmmmm. No." To thus practice a few years ago and voted for a referendum to bring a halt to it? Guess what our fine governor did? He went to the legislature and had the pass a few rules and then SOMEHOW they just voted that referendum out of existence. They also tacked on a rule that this issue can never be voted on by the PEOPLE again. SOOO- the "city managers" continue to rule from their thrones while they laugh at the locally-elected official jesters. One of these "city managers" was in control and directed the change in water systems- he also refused to add the appropriate treatment to the water to reduce its toxicity so that it would not corrode the pipes- he cited low FUNDS in creating this public health DISASTER. Now people are VERY sick, there are children whose nervous systems are impaired for life.

Now- I know some of you would instantly believe that it was a herd of democrats running the show- because democrats are such law-crushing tyrants, right? No.

Citizenship is not taking a bunch of unsuspecting citizens and poisoning them for the sake of funds.

We live each day in a nation whereby our freedoms were written down for all to read and heed. Our identity is in what we believe. How many various immigrants post their homeland from their mirror or a sticker on their vehicle.
In Roosevelts time there was not the diversity of faith in America and you didn't have lgbt agenda back then!

It means being able to live free. Right now our Second Amendmen has become a privilege instead of a right. It became a privilege when money got involved. Now I have to pay money, and ask permission to do something from men, I am guaranteed by god. I should be able to buy property, maintain a lovely home and produce what I need to support my family. Instead, doing that has been ade illegal. I am required to pay a lifetime tax to an electric company, and water company in order to get permission to move into a house I have built or build myself. That is not freedom. That is oppression.
This country was founded on freedom. What happened? Are politcians so utterly worthless we have allowed freedom to slip from our hands? Why in the world did we allow a ruling class to supplant true leadership? Being a citizen means by rule of law, if we citizens have become so dissasitified with the corruption in government we are required to get up, take up arms, and overthrow that corrupt government. How many are willing to do that in accordance with their responsibilities laid down in our most basic founding documents? If only 10% do we have a nation of citizens, or do we have a nation unworthy of the freedoms they enjoy as a citizen?

i'm not sure if there is actually a question in this or not,but our forefathers broke away from England because we were literally being tax'd to death. the rich get rich and so forth,well personally im sure im not the only one to see this happening again.and by our own government.term limit's,minimal pay if any,should be implemented,and the fringe benefits taken away,our founding fathers didn't take a salary,why should our government get better benefits then those defending it.we need to take back control,and if veterans and military minds need to do so for the sake of order,well then,that's how it started,with a band of fighters that apposed the horrific rule and conditions of a government.

As a Soldier who signed from Guam to fight and defend for the Honor of the Great United States of America! My citizenship means the world to me, without the help of the United States retaking our Island of Guam TWICE during the Spanish/American war and during WWII from the Japanese when they took it from the control of the U.S the same day they bombed Pearl Harbor in HI. Growing up on this small Island I found the respect for America, not only for its capabilities but for what it stands for. I signed for that reason, to give back what was given to me, which was FREEDOM sir.

According to a 2015 Harvard IOP survey, 48% of Americans of all races from ages 18-29 felt the idea of the "American Dream" is a dead for them. I would like to see more exposure to the delays in giv7ng "presumptive" for the Camp Lejeune Marine veteran s - my late husband, Donald Burpee, fought k7dney cancer fron 2007 til his death in July 2015 -after being notified by the Marine Corps in 2013 he filed for srvice connected benefits due to the time he served at the base. After multiple delays and denials we are still awaiting resolve for his benefits. After his death last year they announced presumptive but once again there is nothing but delay. Please push this issue back to the front again. Jerry Emsinger and Mike Partain continue this battle but I would hope you too will push to get this resolved. Brenda Burpee

Hi, there Sir!
Just saw this invite in my email... thought I'd respond.
(probably too much coffee)
My only question is this: How far off base do you see my description of the 'verb' citizen is, from the 'norm'?... (I know it's a pronoun-but it could be described as an action word too. ). I'm probably talking out of my a-_-., but here goes...

Ideally, one would think a citizen wouldn't:

* become part of the problems that need solving.
* actively oppose the institution of the very policies that allow him and his family to exist in harmony and peace, and lack of want.
* selfishly attempt to stop others from achieving all they can.
* attempt to block or attack others from practicing their beliefs and freedom of expressions, as long as those freedoms of expressions do not impose, threaten, dictate, or otherwise harm or disturb the rights and expressions of his/her fellow citizens.

* does not form, lead, or join groups whose sole purpose is the destruction of his fellow citizens, without undisputable justifiable cause, be they local or global.

Traditionally, you would think a citizen would:

* uphold and respects the laws of the land, whatever they may be.

* assist his fellow citizens whenever possible.

* try to better him/herself to better serve his own family and the others of his community.

* try to make his homeland a better place for his children, and theirs.

* naturally aid women, children, the ill, the elderly, and the infirm, as good orderly conscious dictates, and good home training traditionally teaches...
( or used to.)

* be willing to bring to the forefront his own involvement on issues that threaten the well-being of his state, his nation, his family, and himself.
On a strictly-personal level, this means not becoming part of any problem, where I live.
Sometimes this means having an active voice in local politics.
Sometimes this means attending functions to show support.
And always, this means showing up to cast a hard-won American freedom called voting.

I believe that there needs to be a more balanced approach to the problems facing the United States that actually need to be addressed today and that don't require another unsupported publicity stunt to further divide an already divided country.
