I ran across this article in which Syria's Assad has stated he feels "Political Islam has failed" and it is time to take another approach. What does everyone else think?

I think if they continue to allow extremists of either branch of Islam to run things, you will not be able to have a stable government due to the differences and hatreds for one another. Plus if you continually fund organizations of hatred, they will eventually turn around and bite you in the ass!

I find this interesting. However, I do not see how you can make the distinction. In Islam, there is no separation of politics and religion. What is more interesting is that Assad is an Alawite, an offshoot of Shia. Shi'ites tend to put more focus on this blending (Look at Iran). From the very beginning Islam was never just a religion- it was a political movement. This can be seen through the unification under Muhammad, through the Caliphs, and through their empire.

Yes but I do not believe the rhetoric as often it is way different than the actions of those extremists.

I'm not so sure we can make that definitive of a statement yet. The Islamic Republic of Iran is still around, Saudi Arabia is still under the control of an Islamic minority, and overall the religious leanings of the Arab world have a huge impact on their politics.

So I think that failure is too strong a word. Perhaps it needs time to be institutionalized in order to be resilient enough of a political system to withstand the sway of popular opinion?

The reason the Assad government is threatened is because the Assad government (like the Saddam Hussein government) is even worse than political Islam. That said, despite the horrors of the Assad regime, mixing religion with politics is still always a fail.
