The DS should be able to recognize the experience you have. When I was a Drill I had one and he played it cool. After a week or so I began to see it. They will wonder if you are CID but once they realize you are not...if you are not...they will have you act as a Student First Sergeant or something similar. I would say expect them to expect a lot out of you. Be a mentor to the ones who have no experience and try not to strangle the ones that don't give a crap about your experience. Depending on your age be prepared for the old timer type comments. Be the leader, and you will enjoy your experience as much as I did. I really did enjoy it. He was initially put into a leadership position. From day 1 he established fire guard rotation and was student platoon sergeant. This allowed the DI's to focus on developing the new soldiers.
I expect you will be relied on to assist in a similar manner, while at the same time still learn and re-learn current basic skills. Do establish a professional line between you and the privates. I had a prior staff sergeant that had the soldiers not stand a parade rest when talking to him or did not address him by his rank instead of his last name. When it was his turn to run things they didn't see him as a leader but as an equal. It was hard for him to lead them. I had to to bring him to the side and explain to him that is why I brief the Soldiers to treat you as an NCO and brief him to maintain it. Had a prior service MP with an 82nd combat patch go through 19D OSUT with me in 1997 (I was a reclass PV2... welder reserves). We had a DS who also had an 82nd combat patch that initially loved having this SGT in his platoon. Then he fell out of a couple runs, but it was passed off due to him "getting back on the horse". The final straw was when he fell out of one of our first long rucks, at that point he was put into general population and treated like a private with the title of SGT. As a Drill Sergeant then a 1SG in a BCTunit I would encourage you to do two things, first remember you are there to learn also and the biggest problem I would come across with PS from another service I would hear "that's not the way we did it in the Air Force"lead by example and develope the other leaders around you, I disagree with the other that said for you to make the other trainees stand at parade reet when speaking to you, although it normally works out that you will be a leader, but the time will come that another trainee of a lower rank could be in charge of you, you will not be able to be part of the team if you put your rank at the same level as the DS. Many times I would not put PS in a leadership position, but I would tell them to take a mentor role, the reason for this was simple, when you mess up, like a no go or you move in the wrong direction, I never wanted the others to get confused with the NCO and trainee. I would never care if someone was a plant (there never was in my units) most DS do the rights thing and they have worked to hard to do something that would mess up their careers. Secondjust be a mentor pay attention to the training and teach the others to pay attention to detail, and when it comes to details or duties, take the less desirable jobs first and show that you will do anything they will do. Do not ever complain about anything you have to look at the endangered get the trainees to do the same. remember you will go through impossible situations, undue stress and perhaps punishments to get the group to work as a team, I would spend as much time working with the recruiters and get to the PT standardsas the rest of the trainees, yes your pt tests point will be higher cause of your age, but you have to keep up with the rest of the platoon especially during runs or mass push ups, so if you are not in the shape of a 20 yr old get there before you go. Hope this helps Response by SFC Bruce Pettengill made Aug 25 at 2015 9:29 PM 2015-08-25T21:29:19-04:00 2015-08-25T21:29:19-04:00 SSG Private RallyPoint Member 918958

You should consider yourself way behind the knowledge curve. You should have a head start on leadership and military bearing. Your mos proficiency will be expected to be at the level of everyone else with the same rank as you when you arrive at your unit. You have to be motivated to learn. You will be in charge. If you are messed up then new privates will not take you seriously. Consider yourself as the model trainee that all other soldiers should emulate. Good luck and catch up. You will ‘probably’ be given some respect as far as
details go, but that’s about it. Just be open to re-learning the basics and you can help
the other recruits by setting the standard and lead by example.
