As for your rank, you will start over for the TIG in the rank you come back in with before the next promotion because your DOR will get reset. You can find the exact amount of credit you receive for your time in grade in AR 600-20 Army command policy under enlisted date of rank.<br />As for your question about years, only your active duty time counts for an active duty retirement, but your 8 years will count toward your time for pay. However TIG will reset. Say if you got out as an E-3 then you will likely come back in as an E-3 and will go forward as if you had just got promoted to that rank and have to work forward towards E-4.
