When I voluntarily attended BCT at the lovely, picturesque Fort Dix, NJ, a fellow Soldier killed a mosquito while we were supposed to be at attention. The Drill Sergeant ( a.k.a the devil incarnate), made him dig a grave, 6 feet by 3 feet, and 6 feet deep. After he buried the bug, the DS said he had to erect a tombstone and asked what sex the mosquito was. Since he did not know he had to dig it up to check. Obviously the Soldier never found it, but he decided to kill another one and claim it was the first. The DS screamed he knew this was not the first one, so the Soldier had to dig a second grave too!

My favorite was an Airman that failed to salute an LT (back in the day when the AF had the small velcro name/rank patch instead of sewn on rank insignia).

LT decides to "train" said Airman by making him salute 100 times.

Col. walks up in the middle of the training session and asks LT what's going on. LT tells Col. what happened and what he is having the Airman do.

Col. looks at LT and says:
"I don't see you returning those salutes LT... "

As a Drill Segeant, my favorite corrective action in that case was to field strip the weapon and give one piece to each DS in the company. The offending private then had to "buy back" each part from the DS. I never had a repeat offender.

If they lose a canteen they carry a 5 gal water jug and if they leave their wall locker unsecure they pack everything in a duffle bag, secure it and carry it on their back. You should try and provide lessons which run parallel with the infraction. The big weapon is right in line with that thinking.

Not the worst thing I ever did to someone. I found an M109A5 unsecure in the motor pool at Dona Anna Range. Had a mechanic park in front of the Flag Pole. Suffice to say my BN didn't suffer from unsecure tracks after that. One AT at Camp Roberts myself and the Sergeant Major went around taking pictures of ourselves in unsecure vehicles. Suffice to say the nightly BN meeting was entertaining.

Had a commo specialist when I was an company XO secure his SKL (no crypto) in his sleeping system. 1SG found it and secured it. My HQ PSG found out and nearly had a heart attack. I found out and almost lost it. After talking with the HQ PSG, 1SG, and CO, I yelled at him for five or so minutes. Since I wasn't the yelling type, it hit home. Threat of prison for losing something that holds crypto had him on the verge of tears, and he had to search the entire assembly area all night until he found it. I demanded to know why he had his rifle but not his SKL but never gave him the chance to even answer, not that I'm sure he would've been able to. My HQ PSG was trying to keep from laughing while I was yelling. He learned his lesson, but he had the SKL 550 corded to him all summer long. And the rest of the company found out that I had been the one yelling and quickly learned not to lose things or get on my bad side.

Good advice for the quiet leaders: pick your one and only time you need to yell; you'll only have to do it once.

During a field problem at Ft. Polk, an E5 "lost" his weapon during the night while he was asleep. The chain of command was furious. ENDEX was called, the rest of the company was called to this site to search for the missing weapon. We were given machetes to hack through the dense forest, the engineers were called to bulldoze all trees that were under a certain size. E5 was getting grilled by CID (and got an Article 15), and we spent the next four weeks hacking away. BN CO would show up and chew-out our CO almost daily - he became a chain smoker (nice guy too). In the end, an 11B who was in our AO was arrested trying to pawn the weapon. The few acres we cleared... Kisatchie National Forest. Our BN training budget was used for the fines, and every field problem for the rest of the fiscal year we cruised to in our LPC (leather personnel carriers). Punishment all around! Good times... good times...

Back in the Mid 90's the third shift or early morning (see 0 dark thirty) crew came upon a Security Cop sleeping on the flight line. We were able to disassemble his weapon remove the firing pin and return it to the car he as driving. We then located his supervisor and gave him the pin. Never did find out what happened.

During my Army AIT, had an IET soldier (I was prior service) had misplaced his ID. The first weekend they let the IET soldiers on pass, he had 4 traffic cones in a rectangle, and right in the middle was his ID. He spent 8 hour shift in full gear at parade rest from 0800 through 1600 Saturday and Sunday.

They also had the big wooden cell phone blocks, and saw some IET soldiers carrying one a couple of times, I can only imagine they got caught, but do not have intel as for their reason to carry them

When I was in Iraq 2006 my 1SG have this 6' foot wooden Gillette Shaver, every time he caught someone not shaving you will carry that thing for a week slung across your shoulder like a freaking M16.
Different scenario same location after guard duty I left my NODs in the tower guard and my replacement snitched on me and told my squad leader he smoked me for an hour, and I have to wear my full battle rattle for a week, and I have to carry a huge rock at the same time.

We had a guy who was always in trouble. Just doing dumb stuff, always receiving counseling a and corrective training. One day he thought he was slick and went to the docs. He did something to convince the doc to give him a "no more than 5 minutes of direct sunlight" profile. Kid thought he had it made; a "no sunshine" profile. Next time he messed up he pulled that out. After a quick call to the doc, 1SG handed him a broom, had him stand just inside a shaded area, and use the broom to "sweep away the sunshine." I've seen a lot of good ones in the last 19 years but sweeping away the sunshine was my all time favorite.

our DI was so pissed at us one day that he put us in MOPP4 - in a basement classroom with the windows shut - heat turned up and made us do side straddle hops for hours until eventually the fire alarm went off... commander not too happy when fire department showed but damn he was effective in his ways, never had that problem again

When I was in basic way back when..clothing came with pieces of paper called inspection tags..we called them commie tags as they were a hit on inspection. ..our arock was the 2nd recruit in charge was hated ..anyway on a inspection they found 88 tags in his peacoat...they made him go around the whole house on his hands and knees blowing a tag crawling up to it and stating "commie tag commie tag leave me alone".. six hours later he finished :)

So this one time, about 8 years ago, we were in the "paperwork" phase of basic, filling out all of our in processing stuff in the barracks. I was standing by the fire guard desk when the door behind me flies open. A drill sergeant with no top and no campaign hat on comes barreling into the barracks. Since he scared the crap out of me, and I thought he was just another soldier I turned around and said, "Jesus F&$@!?& Christ guy, you scared the S*** out of me!" He looked at me and replied " WHAT DID YOU SAY?!?" And because I'm an idiot and hadn't caught on, I said to him, "I SAID, Jesus F****** Christ guy, you SCARED THE S*** out of me!!!" Needless to say, he had me duck walking around the barracks screaming at the top of my lungs "I'm quack quack the duck and I'm all F****D up!" He said to do this till he came back. About 4 hours later, with no voice or ability to move my legs anymore, my drill sergeant has someone go get this evil bastard to come to our barracks. When he arrived, and saw that I was still doing this, I was then told that I was either the "Dumbest mother F****r that has ever lived, or the most dedicated soldier he's ever seen". Apparently I was supposed to stop at some point on my own hahaha.

Left my weapon out of arms length in basic. They tied a piece of 550 cord through my eyelet in my BDU top and then to the front sight post. Long enough to bring the weapon up and fire it. Worn that the who 4 day FTX. wasn't even my fault. Battle buddy was supposed to be watching while I was in porta jon. he left it. He actually got a really really bad smoking!

At basic someone called weapon a gun, so had to go around for time holding up weapon, then grab private parts and loudly hold up weapon and say say this my weapon it is for fighting, then grab other say this a gun and it is for fun.

In '92, my 1SG gave me corrective action for constantly walking across the grass in front of orderly room. The last time he caught me, he gave me a pair of scissors and I had to cut the grass. To this day I never cut across grass, I always take the walkway.

Oh, damn. I did this once in Iraq in 2004. I was fighting Saddam's Revenge during a working party, and had to run to the outhouses we built to squirt out the rear everything in my stomach, sweats and all. When I got back, my battle buddy, who I'd passed my weapon off to, was being confronted by my Staff Sergeant and my Platoon Sergeant. So, needless to say, I got a reaming, pushed until they got tired, stirred burning shit (liquid, I wasn't the only Sick Marine) for the next week, and was asked where my rifle was (never out of arm's reach).

I had a young PVT that decided to drink and drive the night before a field excercise. He called me when it happened. A few Sgts and myself went up to where he had wrecked. I told him he had only 2 options: 1 I call the police and go through all that noise or 2 he belonged to me for 24 hrs. This kid low crawled until he wore a hole in his Kevlar cover. We were careful and made sure we took care of him physically but he went through 24 hours of the harshest "corrective training" I had ever see in my time in. He was barely able to stand at the end. But that soldier stood up and said thank you to each one of the NCOs that assisted me. That kid is now a SSG and well on his way to make E-7.

2000, Fort Knox, 1st platoon, Bravo Troop, 5/15 Cav. Our Drill Sergeants had another prefered method. They had a big ass wrench the tankers used and we called him Iron Mike. Big heavy bastard and if you fucked up, you had to carry this damn wrench till the next recruit fucked up and took over

As an MP on Ft. Sill, we busted up a fight at the Bowling Alley, 3 different Plt of trainees. How do you move 3 Plt back to Barracks? My partner stood in back of vehicle and marched them over the PA. When we turned them over to their respective DS they just left them at Attention and called in the rest of the DS. We hung around for the show. There was yelling and PT for hours.

My favorite was at Ft. Benning. A private forgot to side step in the chow line. Drill made him stand in line and remind everyone to "side step" every day for a week. Priceless....

bear crawl backwards up a grade then crab walk backwards down the grade.... all because a trainee though he could have the lobster for lunch... 1989 Ft Dix NJ. Another trainee thought he could use the payphone when we came back from bivouac. he didn't even shower before calling home that's why he got low crawled, bear crawled, sugar cookies, up downs along with quite a few more drills for about 2 hrs. once he threw up he was denied phone privileges for 1 week.... the trainee was tore up from the floor up during training but eventually went on to becoming a D.I.

When I was at Marine OCS, one of the guys in my platoon had a magazine in the John. He left it in there and the Sergeant Instructor found it. SI came out and asked whose it was. He fessed up and the SI returned the magazine. Then SI said he wanted a copy of it by Friday. The whole platoon had to split up the magazine and hand copy it, words, pictures the whole thing front to back. It was pretty ingenious.

getting ready to go on a field training exercise. My driver left his rifle in the motor pool. The motor sergeant discovered it and brought it to the private. He wrapped 25 feet of chain around the private and padlocked the rifle to him.

Hell l had a soldier leave one of his two day one in theater and the whole company had to have their weapons bungy corded for over a month.even the 1SG and XO did it.

Two interesting things stick out in my great memory, neither was my punishment, one soldier left his weapon unattended in a truck and the truck left. The squad leader gave him a wood 4x4 the length of a m16 with a sling to carry the rest of the week.. Another soldier fell asleep on perimeter guard and our Squad Leader had the young soldier low crawl the rest of his shifts back and forth between fighting positions on the perimeter for the rest of the night. (about 3 hours worth)

While on the grenade range at Benning I let my rifle get further from me than 2nd platoon's drill sergeant. He took it and I knew that if I didn't get it back I was going to be smoked during the few hours we would get to sleep as we had night infiltration that night. During chow I decided to liberate my M16 so I opened the door to the Deuce and started rooting through the collection of weapons that had accrued. Once I found mine I grabbed it and turned around to see my drill sergeant staring back at me. "What are you doing private?", "wait a minute, this isn't the chow line" I responded. "Private, You in my platoon?" "yes; fly on the wall drill sergeant" I said thinking I'm going to spend my next week getting smoked for stealing my rifle back from a drill sergeant. My drill sergeant pulls my Alice suspenders back so he could read my name tape and just goes "don't be a buddy fucker, grab 67 and 114 before that dick finishes chow. Oh and private: you ain't a fly on the wall anymore"...

We had something called the "barrel". If we did something really dumb we had to stand in a 55 gal drum in the middle of the room for a certain amount of time so that everyone could make snarky comments. We were threatened with it more than it was actually used though. If it looked like we were getting ready to do something stupid, someone would mention the "barrel" which saved many a Pvt from the you know what.

Private lost his weapon which was later recovered but missing a sling. As punishment for both, the private had a heavy duty chain that was tied with 550 cord to the ring on the rifle. the chain was his new sling, and you could hear him a mile away.

Private forgot his cac card, had a giant piece of cardboard with a cutout window that would show his face. He had to "present"his Cac card when asked, since it is an inspectable item.

Private wearing socks that were mismatched and not shaving in the morning, had to carry extra socks in his ACU pant pockets as well as a razor.

During basic, walking by the "snake pit" in/out of chow, one rainbow walked by and a TI stopped him and asked why he looked so stupid. The rainbow started to cry and so the TI told him to give "good games" to every person who walked by him the entire way through chow and yell "I'm stupid". Seems cheesy but was hilarious!!

We had a real screw-up in basic, always failing inspections. So rather than take it out on all of us, the DI made the screw-up dig a hole behind the barracks, plant his footlocker in it, bury said footlocker, plant grass seed, water said seed, then dig it all back up and stand inspection while the rest of us had the night off. Hilarious, and it really put the fear of God into the rest of us!

I arrived at Benning at about 0100 hrs from AIT at Ft Gordon, to begin jump school. Around 0200 we were in line going into the supply room. It was a barracks building and the line was along the wall of the bay area. When I got where I could see the bay area floor, there was a private in the front leaning rest and a Black Hat leaning over and laying into the kid's back with riding crop. I did not know what he did, but I tightened my asshole and rigidified my parade rest. Nov 1967. The 173d was in serious combat at Dak To and they were preparing us to join them. And we did. I loved every minute. They fed us double rations, gave 15 minutes to eat. Good times. The dying cockroach was one of their favorite punishments.

We had a soldier who thought it was a good idea to piss by the door to our sleeping quarters while deployed overseas. Naturally he was seen by the Platoon Sergeant and the punishment was savage. He had to dig a 3 x 5 x 5 foot hole with the E tool and move all that dirt with the shovel and shirt to the burn pit area. The next day when he finished and proudly announced that he had completed the task. The 1SG went to inspect his work and when the SPC went to walk away 1SG stopped him and said "where are you going". The SPC protested saying "Ive dug the hole". Top replied "damn right and now you gotta fill this hazard before someone falls in it and kills himself. The next 8 hours were filled with him bring dirt back to the hole to fill up the pit.

8 days from the end of basic back in 2007, I had been assigned with a buddy of mine I went to high school and basic with to clean the DS office. While we were in there, we saw a picture of him with his girl on his desk. She was maxim centerfold level of attractive, no lie. Well, it had become a thing after mail call that we would all put our pictures of our girls up on the inside of someone’s wall locker and take a vote on who got the best picture that week. DS with the attractive lady friend comes walking around, and chimes in about “who won today?”. For some reason, all logic failed me, and I fired off with “Drill Sergeant, you should put that picture of your girl on your desk up here and let us vote!” When I tell you that man made me do 1,000 squat thrusts per day until graduation, I swear it on my honor. Moreover, he watched me do, Every. Single. One. 250 before breakfast chow, 250 before lunch, 250 before dinner, and 25 during mail call or before lights out. If he didn’t see them, they didn’t happen. That guy is still my hero to this day hahaha

There’s no way at PI you could leave a rifle unattended, they watch you like a hawk, you simply don’t have the ability to do something so stupid as to walk away from your weapon. The only thing I ever left unattended was my poncho liner and I paid for that trying to remember where in the hell I left it, I found it, Bends and mothers forever, for a rifle? Damn they’d shoot you.
