Promotable Status...

What do people think about upon a Specialist passing a promotion board them becoming a Corpral? I think this system would be beneficial to soldiers by allowing them to become more familiar with what their responsibilities will be when they make points and are promoted to Sergeant.

Generally, I will do a Lateral Appointment to Corporal when I need a Team Leader and I have a SPC that seems capable. Promotable status has nothing to do with that decision. It is all about tactical and technical proficiency.

I personally am living this question And I dnt like it.......after proving myself as a leader not only to my soldiers but to my leadership I now have to dance like a monkey for points to be looked at as a leader in the army eyes

SPC, when I got my CPL Stripes I had already passed the E5 Promotion Board in my unit in Panama; and when I got Stateside with JRTC I was Promotable and placed in a leadership position in the OPFOR Bn's SCOUT PLT as a CPL. Being a Junior NCO was an excellent preparatory time period where I honed my NCO skills before a slot opened up for me at PLDC (now WLC). I passed PLDC and graduated with honors and was waiting the allotted period before I would have my SGT Stripes pinned on me when a parachute accident ended my military career resulting in my Medical Retirement.

I have a quick question, CPL'S, SPC, anyone; I am a Specialist now however I am looking at possible promotion. I feel as being a Corporal helps the Soldier get ready for the next level . It puts the Soldier more in tact with leadership, but on the other hand being a CPL just really stands as you are promotable and you meet the standards. I am flagged because of ht and wt and pt. But I am making progress and will be looking forward to getitng those items taken care of. Being that those are the only things stopping me from promotion, however I rescently discovered that I can still put my promotion packet in but I would have a twelve month period to provide a passing pt score. With that being said do you think I could pass for promotable?

If this happens then we'll have too many Corporals. I don't think that the army should use it as a training rank.

I don't think a board is necessary for the coropral rank, because in order to be promoted to corporal they need to have already demonstrated leadership abilities and most, that I encountered at least, were already promotable to E5. If a board was introduced we would have too many corporals in an already saturated NCO pool. What leadership positions could they hold other than squad leader? I'm thinking of in a combat arms unit of course. I personally don't think the coropral rank should be used outside of a combat unit. Nothing personal just my own opinion.

Honestly, I hated being a Corporal. It was a constant struggle to get respect as a NCO. Luckily, I made Sergeant two months later.

Then why bother sending him to PLDC. Just have them do a BNCO/ANCO like schools when they hit E-5 and up.

A Specialist in my time, it was for specialty duties and if promoted to Corporal you were in a combat duty or MOS. They move up to SP5, SP6 in their duties or MOS.

So long as they pass BLC, that IS what happens. This is the current policy, it's not a hypothetical.

"Beginning July 1, all Soldiers with the rank of specialist who have been recommended for advancement by a promotion board and completed the Basic Leader Course, or BLC, will be laterally promoted to corporal..."
