Promotion speech ideas?

Good morning, RP!
As some know, I am drawing closer to my promotion to Chief (E-9) on 1 June. I am so truly honored and humbled.

I have written about 2 pages of ideas for my speech (not my speech, just random thought jotted down), but wanted to work towards fine-tuning it. I turn to you all for your pearls of wisdom and suggestions. I do not like the spotlight, so I would love to keep it genuine, effective, a little fun (that's my battle rhythm), and pointed. Start with thanking the endless people that truly own that stripe that I am honored to receive, then hit some Chiefly nuggets and bow out gracefully. :)

In addition to those I tagged, please, ALL are more than welcome to share thoughts on speeches that they have given or enjoyed.

I am one week from promoting (6/1); Ceremony to follow (6/4). I have drilled my speech down to three short paragraphs. First, thanks to the DVs and mostly family. Second, my anecdotal journey "here", paved with graveled road and razor ribbon. Third, what I will bring back to the troops. Oh, and an invite to local joint for plenty of food on me. (Drinks are not my thing.) :)

SMSgt McGirr, first, congrats on making Chief. Second, 2 pages is too much. You've sat/stood at attention through many occasions were the speaker went on too long. Think about that as you prepare. Next, regardless who you thank, even though it is YOUR promotion, your troops had to have had some affect on your career and maybe mentioning them would be a classy touch. Even if it's BS they will respect the fact that you remembered that they had a positive contribution to your promotion. Lastly, if you have immediate family that waited for you during deployments and exercises and endured a certain amount of neglect while you were away.

Target Jr. enlisted and young NCOs... Talk to them about the choices that got you to Chief. Issue a challenge to them to strive to become a chief like you.

Congratulations on your upcoming promotion! Continue to be a servant of others and you will do yourself and the stripes justice. Hold on to the love you have for your country and the sacrifice you make for it. Finally, what you tolerate, is what you deserve. A commission, even a non-commission, is not a license to exercise our personality quirks....it is a sacred trust to maintain honor and tradition, etc. I am a fan of noting that a "promotion is not so much for what you have done, but for what you are expected to do" , and that "leadership is a trust, it is an action, not merely a position" --then gently pledge what you will do to live up to the honor as we entrust our sons, daughters, sisters, wives, husbands, and brothers to you and all others who rank above them.

Be short (not my strength), to the point and have a theme.

Personal messages are fine, but I kept them to a minimum (immediate family) because I would focus on my thanks to them separately.

What do you remember about any promotion ceremony when you were in the audience? If it was a personal "thank you" list, or a recollection of the recipient's career, you probably didn't remember much.

Read Roosevelt's Citizenship in a Republic or some other historical piece and give the group something that ties your career to the profession -- to make them better airmen, leaders, people.

When you achieve the level of success you have achieved, you will have many other opportunities to speak. Speak about yourself if you need to, but think about taking those opportunities to make a difference in a young airmen's life, one who is attending possibly by chance. I believe we as leaders make much more of an impact that way.

First I would like to congratulate you.

I know it my should a bit odd but I like to read material before I do anything like that. Some of my favorite pieces to read is the NCO Creed, Soldiers Creed, and the Oath of an Officer. It puts in a place where I realize to what my I doing and what the Army wants me to be. After that I just try to reaffirm my commitment to such oaths and creed and pledge to uphold them all the way to my last breath.

I'd recommend starting with a few thanks, followed by humor and it is always worthwhile to share a short story of how an NCO set the example for you to emulate and end it with a challenge for those in attendance to be that role model, to take action in the absence of orders and to continue to improve themselves AND the organization.

In over 40 years of association with the military, I've sat through many promotion and retirement ceremonies involving all 5 armed services and government civilians. My advice: be humble, be humorous, be brief, be gone.

Congratulations. And I wish you all the luck and wisdom in your continuing Career.

I really don't have any good speech advice except make it personal. The best words come from the heart.

As a Chief remember respect. While you have it because of the stripes on your shoulder, you will still have to earn it in the eyes of the people. I had dozens of Chiefs in my time. There are only a couple I truly remember. Those were the ones I respected the most because they respected us and what we did.

Congrats! The only advice I would give is be authentic. If you say your humble, be humble in your presentation. It's also OK to be emotional during this significant step in your career. Just be emotional truthful to yourself and your audience. They will love you for it!

I have stood in many formations listening to speeches over the years. The one thing I would recommend, on behalf of everyone in the formation, begin it with "Group (detachment, whatever), attention", followed by "rest". :)

Don't be typical. Doing that will make you just like everyone else who's been promoted before you. I understand the Military is all about tradition, but you're also an individual.

My first piece of advice is "BE YOURSELF"... Those who know you will see right through anything less. Second, "BE HONEST".. The last thing you want is the younger crowd catching a false comment or even the impression of a false comment. I retired in 1999, and there were 3 groups I focused on-the young airmen I knew and mentored.. Then the officers who had earned my respect.. Then, my fellow Sr NCO's who I respected and who I knew respected me. Most Importantly my FAMILY who not only put up with me gone, but also rallied and supported me through it all..
My favorite quote: "I try to take one day at a time, Unfortunately, several attack me at the same time".. ONE LAST and VERY VERY Important comment:

First off, congratulations are in order. I would recommend addressing your dignitaries that are present, your significant other, and concentrate on the airmen and airwomen that got you where you are at. Tell one specific story to your audience that you recall that taught you the ethos and drive to continue on your venture culminating into becoming an E-9.

Practice the three Bs of public speaking. Be brilliant, be bold, and be brief. Praise those troops!

First of all, a big congratulations on reaching a pinnacle that only is reserved for the best of the best. I like your thought process for the promotion speech and would poke fun at myself in the humor part. If you have family and or a spouse, ensure they get mentioned and mentioned often (LOL). First, welcome to the club. You'll learn more in the first six months than you have in your entire career. I can relate some wisdom to you from a pilot's perspective. The move from First Officer to Captain is only 18 inches of distance, but the gained amount of responsibility is immeasurable. Think about that with the extra 1/2 of stripes you will have.

My ROEs for talks
1) Use few words -- tight DMPI tolerances and high weapons effects
2) Thank down first, then up -- down for great airmen and foundation, up for great leadership and wisdom
3) Have your opinion and will -- don't be a talking head; no buzzword bingo
4) Don't make promises you can't keep -- more character; less personality
5) Be an individual -- be true to yourself
6) Own the room; own your target
7) Smile; because you absolutely effing love what you do...no mistaking that ever

I've heard a few promotion speeches as many here have. A resonating effect is to think of what drives you, what you personally had to overcome. Let us in, many young females and some wanting to give up and get out because their dreams of making to where you are may be longer and less desirable for whatever reason. Find that BIG setback in your life, the person that you really still want to be like. You've made it the top and this is your chance to open your heart to us. We know youve done the right things to get there. Focus on one action, maybe you drove drunk and got away with it but had a friend wreck their life, maybe you didn't get your degree(s) until late and knew that if you kept going that whatever happened you'd have the educational stability.
1. Thank everyone
2. Tell that 1 story or link two short events, provide hope in these difficult times
3. Ask to have a mic that you can wear (you'll get it). Stand in front of those NCO's or a specific group and root them on
4 you'll get a standing ovation and it'll be remembered.

My speech would have been like this...had I not retired three months ago and continued to try for that elusive stripe.

Look at sleeve
"That sure is a lot of stripes!" "And with them come a whole lot of responsibility."

Then simply thank all those who helped you achieve your goal.

Best wishes and strive everyday to be a CHIEF not an E9. That applies to every rank, however, it is more evident at the top. I worked everyday to be a Senior Master Sergeant and not just an E8.

The things to mention in a promotion speech:
1. Although I had a good family, even if you do not, hard work and a positive attitude is always effective.
2. The military is a good opportunity for someone of humble means to shine.
3. No matter your rank, always show leadership qualities, your superiors if they are competent and professional they will always appreciate it.
4. Always be the first in, last out.
5. No matter your rank, be the first to pick-up the broom, grab the mop clean the latrine/head.
6. I f you keep this in mind you will never fail to be promoted.
7. Be the best damn enlisted man in your unit, just because you are not in-charge does not mean you cannot set the example.

Genuine, effective and fun is perfect, as is pointed and brief. However, the most memorable promotion speeches (as with any good rhetoric) I've heard have started with why the audience should care to listen to you. Grab their attention, then be genuine, effective and fun. Congratulations!

I was given advice by a SNCO (She too made Chief): BS them 3 times:
1. Be Sincere
2. Be Short
3. Be Seated

Since then, I have heard someone else use that. What they said was, "My commander told me to BS you three times." That was it...the person sat down without another word, including the explanation of "the BS 3 times" -- to say that it was incredibly awkward would be understatement.

You have lots of good advice. I would add/stress three things:
1. Be yourself.
2. If you have a short story about a Chief that inspired or mentored you...you might use that...and follow up with the promise to try to do that for your Airmen, just as Chief XXX did that for you.
3. Thank your family. (I am surprised how many promotions I have seen where the spouse and children, parents, siblings, etc) were not thanked. (Almost as awkward as the person who sat down after telling everyone he was going to BS them 3 times.)

Finally, Congratulations! This is no small achievement so please also pass on my appreciation to your family for your sacrifices and efforts to get to the point. From here on out, your job is take care of your Airmen, develop your NCOs, train your officers and give your best advice and counsel to your commanders. I know there will be more sacrifices and hard work...again, please thank your family for their understanding and support for you.

I was last promoted while in Iraq on a small fire base we built from nothing, next to the embattled Sadr City. RPG strikes on the towers common, mortars daily.

My "Speech" was about the same as it was for SFC, 1SG,
I thanked those who were there.
Those who were not
The commander for the chance to lead his men.
and was done.

Just a few days after that picture, COL Karcher lost both legs in a multi array EFP IED attack on his vehicle.
The next morning we lost another coming back from the hospital dropping off COL Karcher.
Puts my promotion "Speech" and event in perspective ... Be polite, be professional, be quick, shut up and get to work...folks really are dying out there..Do your job.

I would say read the following message. It was written by an AF MSgt, however, the words ring true for all SNCOs. Just change a couple of the rank names to suit your situation (i.e. "Staff and Techs" to "Masters and Seniors") and it's basically the same thing. Just because you make Chief doesn't mean that you get to slack off (IMAO) like some have in my past experiences. Again, the following are not my words (some are pretty foul) but I think it drives the point home. Maybe you can make a change or inspire someone to stop fostering the typical AF dog and pony show. IDK, maybe you can make one person listen for a change....

"I’m a Master Sergeant.

My job is not to be part of the fucking Top 3, or preen and lick my coat so that Colonels and CMSgts like me, or to carefully consider how to earn a “5”.

My job is to take care of my airman, and motivate + inspire my Staff and Tech Sergeants to do the same.

They aren’t as wise as me yet, because they haven’t seen as much, but if I do my job I will expose them to situations where they will begin to acquire that wisdom.

My job is to protect my people and let them truly understand what ‘taking owningship in an organization means’ while at the same time holding them accountable to the high standards I set, exemplify, and enforce.

I shouldn’t have a perfect career history or life, because that gives me no clue how to talk to a junior enlisted who is having troubles. If I’ve never gotten in trouble, what the hell am I supposed to say to Airman Smith who is getting an Article 15 or a Letter of Reprimand?

No. Fuck that.

“Sorry man. I’ve been there. I did something stupid too. But I didn’t let it stop me. I picked myself up and dusted myself off.”

That is the real danger of the one-mistake Air Force. We are robbing our organization of the most powerful force in human history: the ability to learn from our mistakes. Instead we staff it with a bunch of crumb lapping lap-dogs whose only concern is some stupid stratification or some worthless certification they are supposed to have because “someone told me I’m supposed to have it”.

What about people? If you spend so much time buried up your own ass, you forget why you are here in the first place. Your purpose is not as an ego-masturbatory exercise, but as a leader of men and women and a manager of teams who’s goal is to foster an organization that doesn’t trudge along to a broken and sick drum, but hums along with a precision and fury that somehow exceeds the sum of its parts.

These days we don’t even know how to create such an organization. We sometimes marvel at one when we see it, but more often than not it came about through dumb luck because we have forgotten how to be leaders. Inevitably, the next egotistical maniac will take the helm of such an organization and run. it. into. the. ground.

Why do I know this?

Because I have seen it. I have lived it. I have made my mistakes and learned from them, even when they weren’t my mistakes. I have reflected on years of a career spent trying to do the right thing, even when it cost me personally and professionally.

You know why? Because I’m not just a fucking E-7.

I’m a Senior NCO.

And my job is bigger than just me now. People don’t work for me any longer. That’s not how this works.

I work for them. They aren’t there to stroke my ego or provide me with career and EPR fodder. They aren’t there as punching bags to absorb my own shame, guilt, and frustrations. They aren’t there to do the one thousand menial tasks I invent because I am an uncreative prick.

I am there for them, to shepard them towards better careers, to encourage them to pursue personal improvement, to inspire them to do outstanding jobs (even at great personal cost), and to slowly shape them into the SNCOs that I know they will one day be.

Because that’s a family.
That’s an organization.
That’s taking care of each other.

And that’s what the US Air Force was supposed to be, and is about. And if you’re not onboard, and you care more about your own EPR than the SrA who’s wife is leaving him, get the fuck out. If you care more about the next Top 3 Meeting than your SSgt who’s work productivity suddenly plummeted for no discernible reason, get the fuck out. If you care more about impressing the wing commander than what your Staff Sergeants and airmen are saying amongst themselves, get the fuck out.

We don’t need you.

We need SNCOs."

Chief, If you were mentored in your career be certain to thank you mentor. Remind the audience that it is their job (and has always been yours) to continue to seek out talented, motivated individuals for promotion with an eye to always improving things. Then, as Col Williams pointed out -- be brief, be gone and my own special admonition: Always serve excellent quality refreshments. People might not remember the speech, but they'll judge you by the quality of your hospitality. You don't have to "go large" just go "well."

I've sat through hundreds, maybe even thousands, of promotion ceremonies, change of commands/responsibility, retirements, commissionings, graduations, etc (not to mention the thousands of weddings and funerals I've played). You might think this is a moment to wax prophetic. But I'll tell you what any military musician will tell you: Thank a few people and hasten to the reception. Seriously.

Sorry it took so long to actually reply. The thought that stands out to me would be a quick (and I do mean quick) success and failure at each rank or tier. While Chiefs walk on water, it is nice to reenforce that stumbles happen are recoverable at every level.

Be brief, humble, thankful and genuine. Don't say anything you cannot or won't follow through on. You can say all you want about taking care of the troops but you darn well better be all about taking care of the troops. Long after the words you say in your speech are forgotten people will respect you for how concerned you are for those below you than those above you. Your actions will show that your all about the troops. Congratulations on this significant milestone in your career. It took a lot of hard work, sacrifice and dedication. Remember be a Chief not an E-9.

I want to confirm your thoughts on thanks, hit some Chiefly nuggets and bow out - that's perfect. I would suggest to refrain from mentioning names - that always got me in trouble because that makes the people not mentioned by name feel left out - and I don't think it should, but it does - if you are a Christian, I always take an opportunity to publicly praise God for these things as I feel strongly that He appoints leaders and He deserves the glory for everything - doesn't have to be a dissertation, but something like "I want to thank God and all the many Airmen/(I like to use warfighters) Family, Friends" - etc - and you can elaborate with specific groups, etc,... I personally took the opportunity to express that I believe that leaders ARE appointed by God and I felt accountable to Him - which is a good thing for you because you know I'm going to try very hard not to let Him down!

Suggest to make a "humble" statement if that's how you truly feel (I know I did) - "I want you all to know that you deserve the very best from me and I know I'm not perfect, but you have my word I'll be the best CMSGT I can be!" something like that..

Congratulations on the Promotion!! My best piece of advice is to be you and be sincere about it. It sounds like you have some good stuff and solid flow thought out! I know in several speeches from superiors I could tell when they were sincere and coloring in the lines (Thanking the academy type speech material). Let it come from the heart and let your actions once you wear the stripe show that you are a Chief, and not another E-9. Congrats again ma'am, I'm sure you will do great with your speech and as a Chief!

Congratulations on making Chief. I always felt it was a great honor with great responsibility. From reading your prior responses and looking at your record, I think you will give a great speech and make a fine Chief. While your commanders will expect much of you, the enlisted airmen will also expect a lot. You have reached the pinnacle of the enlisted ranks, the 1 %. They will look to you for leadership, inspiration and to be their voice with officers. While officers promoted you, the enlisted are the ones who worked to get you there. Officers are rightly concerned with the MISSION, you must be the voice of the AIRMEN under you who accomplish it. Let them know that they can someday fill your boots. Push education. Be their beacon! A wise, old Chief once told me, "there are E-9's and there are Chiefs, be a CHIEF". Good luck, Chief Stickley.

CMSgt Private RallyPoint Member, first of all, congratulations! Promotion is a big thing, and making the top tier (E-9) is no easy task, no matter what branch of service.

I haven't read all the comments, so I may be reiterating some already spoken points, but if I were to give you any advice at all with regard to a promotion speech, it would be to make it not about your accomplishments, but rather about the accomplishments of others.

None of our successes were achieved without standing on the shoulders of others. Your success depended in large part, on the successes of those you led...don't ever forget that. And although you've made it to the top, be prepared to have someone else stand on your shoulders, as well.

Again, congratulations...may your promotion ceremony be everything you wish it to be, Chief!

I'm not sure why this thread resurfaced nearly a year after your promotion, but I looked at your profile as was somewhat surprised to see that you started in the Army. Do you think you would have enjoyed the same success as a Soldier rather then an Airman? That is to say, how much do you attribute your having reached this rank to switching over?
