PT? Should it only be conducted as a unit or should units be allowed to adopt a pt on your own program? Your thoughts and why.

The Army wants to down size. Would it be (in your opinion) a good idea to allow units to allow Soldiers the freedom to conduct PT on their own? And if they can't maintain Army standards, flag then separate upon another failure to meet standards. Or should unit PT be the end all?

I agree that allowing soldiers to conduct PT on their own would help with downsizing. In many cases, it would probably boost morale as well - not being required to be up and functional before the sun every morning, being able to set a training plan without worrying about how PT might affect it, etc. Have regularly scheduled mock APFTs and company/battalion runs (once a week or every other week maybe), but other that that, PT is an individual responsibility.

There are already plenty of units that power down PT to small unit and individual levels. It is great for a lot of reasons. However, I think it makes sense depending on the type of unit. If your company is made up of Soldiers from E1 up to O3 or O4, there should probably be some structure to the program.
If your company is made up mostly or only of NCOs and Officers, it can be prudent to let them develop individual PT plans and just monitor with an APFT every few months.

On their own. Once or twice a month conduct mock APFT. Running in formation or doing unison PT will not benefit much overall fitness readiness!
