Only because all my gear is ACU’s NOT OCP’s. Why buy obsolete gear that the army has already discarded into trash? That's why your CIF charges you for money if you don't turn it in. My biggest thought here is, you don't want what we called it a "Statement of Charges." I've met some really good Supply Sergeants who would work with soldiers to find or replace your missing items. Unfortunately I have met a few that would take you to the cleaners for as much as they can. Bottom line is, if you signed for it, you're on the hook for it. The Army will get their money. Even the guy who lost a radio back in Vietnam. Years later when he joined the Guard, they made him pay for it. Sad but true. You will save more money by going through your local supply because they can depreciate the maximum amount based on the type of equipment and the amount of time it has been in operation. Surplus stores are easy and very convenient but you actually end up paying more for CTA-50 items when compared to DD 362 or DD 200. Good luck. Ask your Supply SGT for a copy of your OCIE Record. He/she will have the access to give you this record. There will be a column on the form for ETS transaction items. If the letter “N” is in this column, you will need to turn it in. It does not matter if it is ACU, OCP, old, or new; Uncle Sam wants it back. Your Supply NCO also has the ability to draft a DD 362 (Statement it Charges) without submitting it to the receiving CIF. He/she will be able to tell you the exact amount to the cent that you will owe for your missing items. I do this when Soldiers leave my Company so they know what to expect and to give them time to come up with their missing items for a potentially cheaper cost to them. Good luck to you. If you did not loose the equipment out of negligence on your part but in circumstance that maybe outside your control including but not limited to theft, act of nature, field loss etc. You can and should request for a financial investigation of property loss (FLIPL). If the circumstance of loss is exonerating, then you may not have to pay for the equipment.
