What are some of the rare duty stations that no one has heard of?

I would say McMurdo Station in Antarctica is one rare duty station. Not too many people have been there or maybe even want to be assigned in such a cold place.

I don't know of any assignments that I have not heard of?!?!?!?!?!?!?! After all I can't know of them if I've never heard of them, will be watching this thread though for some interesting assignment choices.

Back in the day, they had the Tunnel Neutralization Team (TNT) in Korea. A unit of engineers dedicated to finding the North Korean tunnels into the ROK. Being a nerdy engineer, I would have loved that assignment.

I had spent two years as a civilian contractor working on Kwajalein Atoll. There are only a handful of Soldiers who work there; the rest are civilians (DA and contractors). It's located in the Marshall Islands, approximately 2100 miles SW from Hawaii. It's a great place for SCUBA diving, sailing and fishing.

Allow me to share, regarding duty stations. This also applies to Officers, so if you are assigned to a location where your Leaders has a screw lose and you want to get away prior to losing out on promotion opportunities - check Special Assignment Opportunities. Take on a Special Assignment where NO ONE wants to go (12 to 18 month Assignment), 45 days prior to the end of this assignment - check the board again for an assignment everyone would like to go. D.O.D will honor your request for this 12 to 18 month Assignment. 45 days prior to the end of this second Special Assignment, request to go where NO ONE wants to go. This will be honored. Allow this Special Assignment to expire, because Orders will be sent to you to return to your last duty assignment... where everyone wants to go

Marine Corps Embassy Security Group has small detachments of Marines in every clime and place, think about 170 or so last I checked. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso ring a bell or many other remote locations around the globe.

There are a few slots for 42As and 88Ls at the Special Operations Dive School in Key West, Florida. 88Ls maintain and service the outboard motors the inflatable boats use. 42As do all the admin stuff for the school. I would imagine they also require 92Rs (Parachute Ruggers) for the jump portion of the school, but I have not personally seen the slots for those. Very few slots for each MOS-- that's why it's good to have a buddy in S-1 who has access to the master database for open slots.
