If war breaks out, would I be able to get a reclassification to 11B without being in my reenlistment window?

With the news recently it seems war with the Russian Federation is a possibility. Hypothetically if that happened would I be able to get a reclassification to 11B without being in my reenlistment window? I figure we’d need to ramp up the combat arms to match a mobilized Russia and it would be cheaper to retrain personnel already in rather than recruiting for it.

You will be be put at the 'Needs of the Army'. In Iraq tankers did dismounted patrols.

You would think, if you’re a 92G, this usually means you’re ASVAB score was so low you barely qualified for the service. There is a process, but seeing as 92G is under strength and 11B is at strength, it wouldn’t work. You would need to be in an over strength MOS to voluntarily reclass

It's possible only your career counselor will know for sure, but needs of the Army says you're a rifleman when the Army needs you to be regardless of MOS. I get that you want to be in the fight, but you need to ask if you would also be ok with being Infantry in a time of peace as well as war or is this just because of the chance to fight Russians?

Either way, your decision is yours and you should pursue it or not because of what your convictions say not what we say.

A war breaking out won't cause the Army to suddenly need less cooks. The US military positions itself to be capable of fighting two wars at the same time. If one breaks out right now, we have the correct number of cooks and infantry to fight it.

You can reclass any time that your MOS at your grade is listed as Overstrength on the In/Out calls and the one you want is listed as Understrength. Infantry is often Understrength but 92G is rarely Overstrength.

The easiest, fastest way to reclass to 11B is to go to Ranger School. Once you have your tab it's a quick 4187 to HRC and you're an 11B

You do realize that the Army uses all MOSs in war right? What makes you think combat arms would need "ramped up" even if (big if) we had a conventional war with Russia?

If you wanted to be infantry, why didn't you just come in as infantry instead of a cook?

There is always imminent danger. Russia is just the flavor of the month. Infantry is a high demand MOS. They will always find people wanting to enlist. The worst case they will do what they did when Iraq and Afghanistan were at a peak and reclass entry level folks who missed their class dates or send general contracts. They will use available bodies instead of short changing other MOSs

There’s no chance Biden puts boots on the ground in The Ukraine, he’ll follow Obama’s lead with Crimea , and let them take it. . If he was serious he’d be imbedding troops as would other NATO countries. I’m assume killing NATO troops might hinder Putin, that would be a serious escalation, but they’ll put troops into Poland and just watch and it’ll be a half assed proxy thing. can depend on a few things, your current MOS, is it a critical MOS, are they overstrength, is the MOS you want also critical and understrength, you may need a waiver from your current field

I'll leave this little bit of advise for you and you can share it with your young counterparts. Do your training and be prepared; but don't go seeking the nightmare you haven't experienced. If called upon to do your job, do it, do it with vigor, do it to the best of your ability, nothing will be as you expect it and afterwards nothing will be the same.
