Rick loved airplanes and flying and we traded rides; I gave him several rides in sailplanes flying from Ryan Field in Tucson, and he returned the favor with flights in a Grumman Tiger. Two stories about Rick are worth repeating:

During summer thunderstorm season one day he and I were in the process of putting out a weather warming when an AF Academy Cadet, on-base as a Third Lieutenant, walked into the Weather Station. Rick barked out to the young fellow, “Don’t say a thing! Stand at the wall. Watch what we are doing. We will talk with you after we get this done!” The cadet did exactly as told. He watched as we put out the warning on the telewriter, called the three command posts and numerous flying units, and afterwards, we explained what we were doing and how important it was to get the warning out with the desired lead time, and then chatted some more about the mission of our weather unit.

In the spring of 1979 Rick deployed from Davis-Monthan to Aviano in Italy to provide weather to an Air Guard Unit during an overseas deployment, and during that time he pinned on Captain. After returning to Arizona, the phone rang one day and he sang out, “Aviano Weather, Lt Wohlman…er..DM Weather, Lt…, oh heck, I don’t know where I am or what I am, how can I help you?”

Rick was a marvelous young fellow to have on a busy base; he was involved in the unit, flying, taking care of young “RJ,” and a very good weather guy. I am sorry to hear of his passing, but was so glad to know him and share time in the sky with him.

Bob

ROBERT W. He was born on Sept. 22,1952 to the late Marion Shaffrick Wohlman and Richard L. Wohlman.
He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Patricia (Peterson) Wohlman; son Richard Jackson (Katie)
Wohlman: daughters Kelly Dean (Eric) Pilarczyk; Kayce (Nate) Keane; sister Debra (James) Hendryx, and precious grandchildren Jackson Wohlman and Penelope Pilarczyk.

Rick attended the United States Air Force Academy
and then served his country as an aerial weather reconnaissance officer, chasing typhoons in the Pacific and hurricanes in the Atlantic. He received a distinguished service award for locating a crippled 47ft. sailboat with 6 souls aboard during supertyphoon Tip, when the ship lost communications.

His adventures took him to North Carolina where he taught classes at a university, Huntsville, Alabama where he worked for NASA and finally retiring to Parker, Colorado, where he worked as a real estate broker with
his wife, Patricia. Rick loved airplanes, the mountains and politics. But most of all he loved his family.

He will be deeply missed. Services and internment will be held Friday, May 23 at 1:00 at the United States Air Force Academy in
Colorado Springs.

My husband was in the 21st Squadron in England as part of the DDay wea plans. He went to the continent as DDay plus 60. He was there for the Belgian Bulge and on into liberating Berlin.

THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL POST.
