The man traveled to Bakersfield early Sunday in the belief he’d be spending time with the woman he loved.

But when he arrived at her south Bakersfield residence, three men wearing hockey masks punched, kicked and choked him to the point of passing out, according to police documents. The woman listened to the beating from a back bedroom.

The documents say the defendants — including Sergio Medina, the woman’s husband — are infantrymen in the U.S. Marine Corps. Medina, 20, Rodrigo Sanchez, 19, and Leonardo Ortiz, 19, have pleaded not guilty to charges including kidnapping with bodily injury and robbery, and are being held on $500,000 bail.

The victim was interviewed by police Sunday morning. He said he had arrived in the 2800 block of Lee Drive after receiving a Snapchat message from Diana Reyes, whom he met in 2012 and with whom he’d once been romantically involved.

The man said they talked often on social media about her marital troubles, according to the documents filed in Kern County Superior Court. She’d been trying to get him to come to Bakersfield, and he arrived at her home about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

When he parked nearby, he received a Snapchat message saying, “Come in the door is unlocked,” the documents say. The man entered the home and was approached by three men in hockey masks who immediately began beating him.

They forced him to the ground and bound his wrists with zip ties, the documents say. Then they placed a belt around his neck, and the man told police he struggled so hard to breathe he nearly lost consciousness.

The documents say one of the men, whom the others called “Sergio,” asked him what he was doing at the house. He told him he was there to meet Reyes, and Sergio asked if he knew she was married.

The man said he believed she was getting a divorce and he was in love with her. The men laughed at him.

They held him captive for about 30 minutes, and released him after taking items including his cellphone and wallet, the documents say. They threatened to kill him.

“We know where your family lives and have your driver’s license, so don’t go to the cops,” the man said his assailants told him.

The defendants and Reyes followed the man as he drove from the neighborhood, the documents say. The man eventually parked at a 7-Eleven near Real Road and punched his vehicle’s OnStar button for medical assistance.

Police were contacted after he was taken to a hospital with injuries including an orbital fracture with his left eye swollen shut, bruising to his head and entire body, and swelling to his head and neck. The documents say abrasions were visible on his wrists and neck.

Police soon stopped Medina in a vehicle, and found Sanchez and Ortiz at a residence in the 5500 block of Monitor Street.

Medina admitted to assaulting the man, and he helped police locate some of the stolen items, according to the documents. He told investigators he had already destroyed the man’s cellphone, and police found other items had been partly burned.

Reyes told investigators that Medina told her to stay in a back bedroom shortly before the victim arrived, the documents say. She said she heard the men pummeling the victim.

Reyes said she and the victim never had sex, but she once kissed him while her husband was on deployment, the documents say. She also told detectives her husband knows her Snapchat password.

Yes the Marines handled this wrong. Having an affair with another man's wife is wrong too. There is such a thing today that is called a divorce if you are in an unhappy situation. Two wrongs will never make a right. Also, having been stationed in Southern California myself, there are women who want to marry military men just to benefit from them and they sneak around and have affairs whenever possible. Matters of the heart can cause people to do terrible things. I would need a little more investigation to draw a just who all is guilty here and how to punish ALL those who did wrong.

not sure if everyone missed it, but the husband has her snapchat password, and is deployed. although being on deployment and asking someone to check up on her for him may not exactly be what happened, what actually did happen sounds pretty revengeful. the guy they did this to is a civilian, not sure it would have taken 3 marines to scare him like this. i agree they went way overboard. i'm not sure that even risking being charged with assault and battery would have been worthwhile in this case, or any case for that matter regarding a civilian and a cheating spouse.

honestly, if that guy did something to his family, i could see that, but not this. maybe these marines were trying to make a statement for all other marines, but man, come on..

Jealousy is a monster that will make the hardest of us react first and think of the consequence later. While at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) back in 1980, it was not surprising to have Young Marines do some really incredible things. I was wondering why everyone on the ground was yelling and look up at the roof when these two legs landed on each side of my window! I jumped before I could catch myself but then this Marine Private just as calmly said, "How are You today Sergeant Means, Sir." I answered and told him to make sure he was extra careful. He told me he would be and continued on his way. I recall one of the Marines was Pvt. North. There were four of them who constantly were doing things to make the Army Folks panic. On more than one occasions Marines Corporal Walker and Sergeant Mason thanked me for getting their Privates out of trouble. We were in the Dinning Facility line one day and I noticed blood on one of the Marine's hand. I asked was he alright and he jumped to attention and told me he was and asked would I like to see his pet. The Marine had a mangled bird in his pocket. The lady checking the chow cards wanted to see the pet and I told her she did not. Once again the Marine jumped to attention and asked could he show the lady his pet. I told him no but the lady demanded the Marine show her what was in his pocket. I told him to show her and she screamed and knocked papers every where. When the Chow Sergeant came, she tried to get the Marines kicked out of the Chow Hall. I explained they had asked permission, I said no but she demanded. I told the Chow Sergeant the Marines had to eat too and they had asked permission. This time, a Staff Sergeant came with the other two and thanked me. Given the same situation as this beating to the guy cheating on one of the Marine's wife, they would get together and beat the shit out the guy before thinking. Somebody need to come to those Marines' Defense. If the judge do something to hurt those Marines somebody need to "FRAG" him too.

Regarless of what is going one, being in the miltary may it be Army, Airforce, Marines, Navy, and Coast, we are held to the same standards. Walking aways and thinking about the situation before turning viloent in my opinon is the right course instead of discracing the branches. There are other civial courses of action he could have taken.

That's the wrong answer Marines. Bravery is not demonstrated that way, and I have being in many missions with Marines along side to know they are brave indeed. After reading most of the post here on this subject I find a few that actually have merit. Some were just plan too politically correct for reality. Been there done that (twice, slow learner) but, here is another thought provoking scenario:
First thing in all of this is use your mind. Figure a way to entice your “wife” into asking her “friend” to come visit while you are away for a few days. Once he takes the suggestion and arrives let them do their thing and somewhere in the middle you show up, unarmed. (If you are armed this presents a whole new set of problems). Now as you are beating the living crap out of this guy that is rapping your wife she has a choice to make admit and defend her “friend” to stop the beating or let him take it. Call the police either way after the guy is subdued enough to set in the corner without the thought of moving. Once the authorities arrive they can do their investigation to determine if it was rape or an affair. If she sings out for you to stop the beating you know, if not the guy is going to sing to the police knowing his friend through him under the bus already. Either way she is out and you have a better chance of staying out of jail and keeping your career.

While any and all of may think that this is a good thing and even righteous punishment for such an infraction there are other things to consider. First my credentials... I don't have any just a good sense of right and wrong that God gave me. I am also a 20 year combat arms guy. I saw this time and time again on deployments. But here is the question I want to ask? this Marine got his pound of flesh because he thought she was fooling around on him, well and good. But who polices him on float? did his float stop in Thailand at say Phuket or Pattya Beach? was he faithful? I know that the story is what happens on float stays on float. what if it was a Med Float and stopped in Spain? Yes I and many others have thought how messed up it is to have a chick take your money and sell your truck and sleep with someone else in your bed. And we thought I would love to cap this clown for this action. But are we being fair? if you fool around on float where no one is going to dime you out and then find out that your wife or GF is stepping out on you back in the rear where she cant hide what is happening how can you hold her accountable for that if you are not straight as an arrow? This story may sound good and you may think that vengeance was served but in truth we don't know the whole story except that these Marines will now have to answer for what they have done. It would behoove them to stand tall and take what happens. They opened the ball and called the dance now they have to pay the piper.

I say ol' Jody is lucky. The grunts I served with 20 or so years ago would have thrown Jody and the whore off a balcony somewhere. Chesty is shaking his head in disgust at how soft our Corps has become. I knocked another marine's front teeth out with a bowling ball for grabbing my buddy's girlfriend's ass. The OOD laughed his ass off and said he didn't want to be disturbed for "petty bullshit" anymore. Nothing more was said about it and I got promoted to corporal a month or so later.

All parties involved were as stupid as a box of hair. Jody for messing with a married woman. Messing with a married woman in any circumstance is just phenomenally stupid period. The wife for being a cheating whore. If you don't like being married to a service member then hit the road. Dont make a fool of the service member because you can't handle dependant life. The Marines for not planning and handling the situation better. Nail him out on the street, use no names and have an alibi.

Be angry, be jealous, throw her out on her ass, BUT DON'T be stupid. People aren't property. You don't own your wife and your wife doesn't own you. She owes you loyalty (goes both ways), but only because she promised it to you. Jody isn't responsible for your wife's actions, didn't make you any promises, and doesn't owe you shit. Violence may be your stock and trade in combat, and the adjustment may be REALLY, REALLY hard, but you're not in combat back home. Even in combat, if you don't use your head for more than a helmet rack, you're dangerous and not good to anyone. You're still a man if you use your head. Patch things up if you want to and you can. Otherwise, divorce her and march on!

The Navy Regional Correction Center and the other Joint Regional Correction Centers across the US are full of young and proud Marines, Soldiers and Airmen who did not manage anger and personal relationships well. Their careers are over, their relationships end badly, their prospects for employment narrow considerably...all before 25. Maturity came at a very high price.

I have read this and a lot of the responses back and forth, and just have to laugh. Did the guy need to have his ass handed to him...absolutely. But herein lies the question(s). Was the Marine so scared to handle it himself that he had to have three others help. The rage of one man finding out his spouse was cheating should have been enough. Here is the other thing, had the Marine been the only one, then you get the defense, he walked into my house, I thought he was an intruder. The minute that the three others were added to the mix, was their downfall. I understand the brotherhood of a fellow Marine, Soldier Airman, Sailor (Unfortunately, Marines don't corner the market on this), and there is always one in the group, who is going to get scared when they get picked up by the Police and start singing. It even says it in the story. So one mans word against another is easier than trying to get four to keep to the same story.

I agree with most of the comments. They need way better training. But most of all no woman is worth going to jail over. But most of all don't send the men to jail give them the choice to deploy again instead of jail 12month deployment. Is a lot worse than 12 years in prison.

I think that the wife is lying. They more then just kissed. And besides, and online affair is STILL an affair.
I have been through this, and its not about controlling you wife (that's called domestic abuse and violence, BTW) Its about loyalty and honor and values.
The guy is lucky he didt get killed over this. I know for a fact that if I ever see the two men that my wife had affairs with, I will straight up kill them. Even though we are divorced now.

From a Marine who had several Jody's apparently fucking my (ex)wife every time I deployed on ops or training throughout the country, I can honestly say I wanted to destroy her and the guys at first. Ironically, they were all Lcpls and below (when I confronted her, why couldn't she at least scale up to the Officers ranks ... LOL).

Anyways, I found out while at Camp Fuji. Dumb ass wife didn't realize I could use the answering machine as a room monitor (yeah youngins, I'm dating myself here, we still had answering machines back then). Let's just say with the 11 hour-ish time difference, I caught her at the (in)appropriate time. I don't remember much. I woke up in the Chaplin's office and later saw the telephone booth destroyed and the phone itself busted inward (explains the broken knuckles).

Anyways, I had several friends from a sister unit back in Lejeune asking me if I wanted them to run a bag'n'tag ... they would eagerly do it for one of their family. I seriously had to resist saying yes. Hell, I had a plausible alibi ... I was on the other side of the world. But no ... I kept thinking of what my senior drill instructor told me when he found i was getting married after boot camp ... "if the Corps wanted you to have a wife, they'd issue you one in boot camp son!" At the end of the day, I decided the Marines were just being Marines ... just out to grab some ass (but POGs no less! lol, j/k) In the end, it was her that chose to open up her damn legs and present an LZ for them.

Course, when I got back, I paid the three I knew of a visit and very quickly advised them of how I had them by the balls with evidence, and I could cause them to get a Big Chicken Dinner if they didn't give me what I needed ... more info on the future EXwife. :)

I'm from Bakersgiel originally, raised there, signed up for the Army there. That being said this is against every core value a solider is taught. This is not some hazing incident and regardless of the situation they injured a civilian they swore to protect. I've been watching that new walking dead driers and they portray the military poorly (in my opinion) so this type of behavior only destroys the civilians view of the military. I am saddened to hear of this incident...very sad...they plead not guilty but their admissions to police make this case a slam dunk in my opinion.

Bottom Line respect marriage if she has a husband stay away there shouldn't be any romance period. And his wife is foul you have a husband that's on deployment and you screw around. I believe that no man should hit a woman period . But beat the hell out of the bastard that takes a run at your wife. However illegal it was to beat the man and you are facing jail time and removal from the service, I can understand the were that Marine was coming from. And I hope Jody learned his lesson. Let's face it- you can only report so many ways how produce grows in Bakersfield before you finally turn to bashing Marines.

It's abundantly clear to me this paper is trying to boost it's circulation at the expense of the Corp. May I suggest no recruiting ads be placed with this paper until an apology is given to it's subscribers and the community at large (that no doubt includes hundreds of families whose fathers, sons, brothers, etc. have bled and died as US Marines so the paper can freely report the "news").

Honestly, I could understand being angry about it but they took it too far, he should've just left her ass. A lot of you might think that, I think so too but honestly, I could see why those Marines did what they did. I don't condone it but I understand it. When you're out there in the shit, not knowing whether or not you're gonna make it home, the one thing you at least hope that you could be sure of is that your woman or man is being faithful to you waiting for you to get back. You expect that and I think it's right to expect loyalty out of somebody that you married and that they expect the same kind of loyalty out of you.

During my time in the Corps, I've seen a lot of spouses run around on their man or woman. I've seen a lot of "Dear John" letters. You're out there putting boots on the ground doing your job expecting to come home and try to put the shit out of your head. Then you come home to find the one that you've been fighting to get back to has fucked around on you. Some cases it was with more than one person more than once. It's a screwed up thing and something that could drive somebody to kill. What these Marines did was not right at all but when you're hurt like that, it's hard to see straight. I've actually did something in one of my relationships during my time in the Corps that I'm not exactly proud of. I caught my girlfriend at the time cheating on me in an apartment we shared together. I made both of them get out the apartment at gunpoint, both naked, and locked them outside. I didn't allow them to get their clothes back until the police arrived. Luckily, I didn't get arrested.

When I caught them, I actually wanted to kill them both, I don't know what stopped me, I guess you could say some kind of reasoning came in and I thought it better to embarrass them. I thought it was pretty hilarious back then but now, I wonder if I could have handle things differently rather than pulling my pistol, threatening to shove it up their asses and pull the trigger if they didn't get out. Anyway, the point that I'm trying to make is that when you're a young Marine, or service member, you don't actually make the best decisions in some situations. If I was in that situation, it's hard to say what I would've done. I might have beat the hell out of him myself. I would've rather myself get in trouble than my Marines get in trouble with me.

I was married to the army 22 years 7 months 23 days and had no time for a family I saw family unit fall apart due to the male treatment of his wife and this guy thing . On the time that I went to the club I was hit on time and time again . Due to my respect for my brother I found a way to politely refuse to get pull in to that web . Latter I learn that some of those women made snide remarks about me . I kept the faith with my self and my brother . I wed in 1971 My wife and I told each other that we both has past and on the day we wed was day one for both of us .I will not ask her about her and she will not ask ne about mine We have had a life full of love and respect for each other sign 40 yards
