Republican, Democrat, or other? What do we have more of here? What reasons do you like one party over the other?

I have heard that the majority of the military tend to support the Republican party, although I am sure it is not a complete landslide.

More recently it seems that the Libertarian party has gained a lot of ground among service members.

I am doing a survey to see which way people in this group lean but I would also like to hear everyone's opinions on why they like one over the other, or what would get them to change their minds, or what they do and don't like about each party.

I'm very Centrist and don't subscribe to any of those three parties or platforms exclusively. I tend to lean conservative on economic or defense issues, and liberal on social issues.
With the libertarian agenda, I really have no idea where I stand because I haven't run into a level-headed libertarian yet; the only ones I've seen are the ones that seem to be buying into all the conspiracy nonsense.

I'm conservative. I believe in less government, the better. I believe strongly in free enterprise. I vote for the candidate who most likely will represent me...not a particular party affiliation. I believe in God and Country!

SGT Aitken, I used to be a Republican until the Tea Party and the Ultra Right took it over. Now I am an Independent. Since NC does not recognize any the Independent Party, I do get to choose which Party to vote in during the Primaries.
As it stands, neither of the two Major Parties, in my opinion, has a viable candidate for President. Hopefully that will change in the next two years. As it stands I have not been able to vote FOR a Presidential Candidate since Reagan just against the opponent.

I believe you need to revamp your Survey and include Independents since I cannot answer it and am sort of surprised to see the results. "None of the Above" might also be a good choice.

I consider myself to be an independent who leans more conservatively. I do not have time nor want to be involved with parties that have a habit of slinging mud and out right hatred towards members of the other parties. Whether this is a facade put on by our leaders to divide the American people, is reality or a mixture of both, it divides the people of the United States. It doesn't help the U.S.A come back to her former glory of being a country where the average American had a decent or better job, where we were the leader in manufacturing and where the citizens stood behind their military even if they didn't always agree with them. So I choose to be an independent who works silently behind the scenes doing what I can to help bring some common sense to a land who appears to be torn in 2 politically.

I think all the politicians now are pretty worthless....I usually side with Democrats but if I think Democrats aren't the right choice I will vote for any other person in whatever party that thinks similar to me...I also think a 2 party majority (left or right), is wrong we need a strong 3rd or 4th party as well

The Political realm in the US has been moving away from what it should be for many years now. I am leaning more and more Libertarian due to the fact that both Democrats and Republicans are so far removed from the people they work for. They do what they want instead of listening to the American populace. In the past, I have voted republican because I thought I was throwing my vote away otherwise. I HATE our two party majority and "electoral college."

In general, I am fiscally conservative, socially liberally. I hope that I can stick to my guns and actually vote more Libertarian going forward rather than voting republican..... but the whole idea of a Demorcrat winning office because the conservatives were split between the republican candidate and the libertarian candidate ticks me off. That's the only reason I didnt vote for Gary Johnson in 2012.... I didn't vote "for" Romney. I voted "against" Obama.... and it still didn't work :(

I Guess my biggest influencer would be my love of my fellow man. Whichever Party is exercising the most Empathy will probably enjoy my Support. During my time on Active Duty (21 years) there was still such a thing as a Compassionate Conservative. I was one and a Republican then. In todays heated politics and since the advent of FOX in 96. Republicans seem to want to tell me who to blame and hate. I don't play that game very well so now I am a registered Democrat and Campaign very actively for the Democratic Party. That might change but not in the near future.

The current political powers have devolved into elitist fraternities of power hungry, illicit spending know-it-all's who believe that the common man (or woman) could not possibly comprehend or understand what is important in Washington DC. They believe only they know what is 'right' for the people, and the people are too stupid to realize that.

It would be great to find a Davey Crockett in today's world who would stand up for the people against all this political elite crap, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I read an article back in 2010 by Bob Livingston on Davey Crockett titled: Sockdolager that embodies the type of person I believe would be a good representative of the people. Until we can look past these political labels and the ideology that come with it, we're stuck with the multitude of people who just follow the leader into a deeper hole.

In Nov when the Senate and the House are taken back by Democrats, allot of the Presidents policies will go through. The obstruction or say no mentality will be over. Maybe we can get Citizens United out of our politics to and restore the peoples vote not big money and corporations. To get anyone to change? The battle lines are drawn and Nov is a big battle. More obstruction or less is the question move forward as a nation or stagnate (move like pond water)for 2 more years. There was not an option for none of the above, so since I am conservative, I chose Republican. I tend to vote along the lines of my values and not any particular party. Personally, I think the party system breeds corruption.

In my opinion it does not matter what party one votes for. As long as there is an uneducated electorate, all parties will continue to manipulate and BS the voters. Becoming educated about the issues and researching the politicians will yield a higher quality vote at election time.

I am neither a tea party guy or a 'science denier' but I still consider myself a republican.

And the term "independent" is overused.
Virtually all non-elected voters are 'independents.'

I vote my views. They generally align with the GOP platform, but that doesn't make me any less 'independent' than anyone else.

I registered as a Democrat in NY because they have a closed primary system in that state and I've leaned towards the Dems lately. However, I've voted for Republications, Democrats, Libertarians, and Green party members during my voting history; I tend to give priority to my evaluation of the individual candidate for office over that person's party affiliation.

Now that I'm back in Virginia, I'm (officially) politically unaffiliated again, although I'm no fan of the Tea Party so GOP candidates who swing too far right will lose my respect. I prefer moderates, like former Sen. Jim Webb, who was really a "Blue Dog" Democrat. Of our present senators (both former governors), I prefer Mark Warner, another centrist Democrat with strong business experience.

I have never followed a political party. Why you might ask, because IMHO, they are the downfall of American government. They vote along party lines for the good of the party, not the American people. Their "philosophies" change constantly - what one party thought 10 years ago is what the other party thinks now. Thanks to the electoral college system and my home state being highly democratic, my presidential vote counts for squat if I don't vote democrat - which I haven't done in several years. In the past 6 years, NOTHING has gotten done in this country, we've almost closed down the government, put people out of work and made almost zero progress in our foreign policy because of political parties.

The real problem seems to be the classifications. I know a lot of people who are so disenfranchised by both ruling parties, some are declining to state.

The real issue is the masses are not represented anymore. It is the plutocrats and the extremists that are running the show. It is time to take back our America, reinstate the laws and provisions of our Constitution, and let common sense prevail once again.

I am a West Point Grad, did my active duty time, and now in the national guard. i was also a former state chairman for the GOP. When I was elected I was the youngest in the country.

Having said that though, I am first an American. I wouldn't consider myself a partisan politician, where party lines mean more to me than getting stuff done. That is what I am frustrated with.

I would say I am a practical Republican that wants to move our country forward with a growing economy, liberty, fiscal accountability, equality of opportunity, and a strong national defense.

There are always people from different parties, sects, and camps that try to take over the establishment. Unfortunately in my time in politics, the biggest thing I learned is that what separates many Americans aren't necessarily values or beliefs, but egos and pride.

I had to deal with that more than anything as the chairman. Some people like to squabble for the sake or squabbling so they can feel relevant and important. unforunately those that have the "scorched earth" mentality don't see the long-term damage that it does.

So coming back full circle to the question, I am a republican and proud to be one. but we all have a lot of work to do to make our country a better place, and much of it rests on keeping the end in mind, not partisan politics or letting egos get in the way.

The biggest issue for me is second amendment issues, the Dems want to unreasonably restrict, if not all out ban, private firearm ownership. Regardless of any law, I will never disarm, i just don't want to be called a criminal and have to start shooting cops because of a bunch of America hating "progressive" dems want to make me their victim and send their minions on confiscation errands. Behind that it is the social programs of the dems, they are allowing criminal behavior on our borders for nothing more than to increase their voting base, not to mention the first amendment violations that have come up lately with the fallacious gay "marriage" debate and all the politically correct crap that goes with it. I would much rather see a Libertarian than a Republican in office, but there is no way I could ever vote for a modern dem, and I pretty much see anyone that would as an idiot, blind ideologue or an enemy of the U.S. and all of our traditions and culture. If you vote dem, wake up, you are hurting the country.

Those "two" other parties listed are not all that different in all practicality. Both wish to expand the size of government for one purpose or another. Both wish to remove us from the idea that the powers not granted the Federal government belong to the States or to the People Respectively. Both parties are interested in growing THEIR dynasties, and preserving THEIR power.

The Libertarian part is interested in adhering to the founding principles and the letter of the Constitution, understanding that government gets it's power from the States and from the People, and NOT the other way around. Libertarians for these reasons know that Rights belong to Individuals and not special interest groups. This is why I am a Libertarian, Politically speaking.

I choose Libertarian ideology because it offers the least amount of government. Government does several things very well and fairly efficiently (national defense, regulation of interstate commerce, basic public services etc.), out side of these things it becomes intrusive and stifling. I am not against social programs, but very limited. Safety nets are usually the right thing to do, but who wants generations on welfare? I have never voted Democrat in my life, and when it's close I will move from the Libertarian candidate to the Republican. There is nothing that I like about Dem ideology, they are clearly anti 2nd amendment, and wish to reshape this great nation into something freakish and oppressive that I want no part of. That moron Obama pretty much put his cards on the table when campaigning for the '08 election stated that rural Pennsylvanians clung to their "religion and guns too tightly" !!! Guess what, barry just knocked the first two (and arguably MOST important) amendments of the Bill of Rights! He still got elected, TWICE! WTF, do not enough people not see through such blatantly un American remarks such as those? Clearly not, I guess blind ideology to such asinine things gay "marriage" and universal health care wins out. Sad state of affairs indeed.

I, like the majority of people I know, am generally libertarian (don't take my guns or my neighbor's right to marry whomever they want.) However, something to think about is that they are the party that would reduce our military spending the most. Translation: even more of us are out of jobs, in the military, as military contractors, and as DOD Civilians. Hopefully we fare just as well working in corporate America! I am a strong believer in personal freedom and libertarianism. I know some will question the disparity between the authoritarian environment of the military and my political beliefs, but I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. I chose to join the military and to accept the requisite limitations and controls on my life.

I view every person as having an invisible bubble in which they should be able to do anything they wish so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else and they are willing to accept any consequences of their behavior. I am regularly disturbed by national politics that try and enforce the "greater good" when this only will ever serve to empower the tyranny of the majority.

I also greatly distrust those that claim to be moral leaders for our country. Rather than parrot quasi religious propaganda, we would be better served if our leaders would take a moment to self-reflect on their personal ethics and the ethics of their political positions.

Right and wrong has always at its core been defined as what is good or bad for the society you belong to. That is why it is wrong to kill your neighbor, but okay to kill your enemy. It is also why it is so easy for our politicians to rationalize unethical behavior if the ends ultimately justify the means. But research into game theory and ethics indicates that "morals by agreement" (or ethics if you will) is ultimately the best way to maximize outcomes in the long term. And I will stop here before I go off on a tangent of game theory...

I would encourage every person to critically analyze their personal and political belief systems and see if they can find any logical hang ups that don't quite mesh. At the very least fully own your own system of beliefs so that no other person can sway you easily.

Libertarian. Smaller more fiscally conservative government that doesn't get involved with the minute details of peoples lifes. Saves time, money and headaches. Socially liberal on that front. IE, if two dude get married, the government must recognize it if they are going to recognize a traditional marriage. The other alternative is to not recognize any marriage at all as a government, which is perfectly fine to me. Regardless of my personal convictions toward gay marriage, the government doesn't establish the moral boundries, the people do. the day we allow the government to establish it for us, we've lost our way as a society.

Personally, I'm an independent. I also believe that the difference between liberals and conservatives in this country is minuscule compared to political extremes elsewhere. The billions in campaign funding we see every election cycle has mostly gone toward hiding the fact that the DNC and the GOP are basically the same in terms of how they act and vote. I tend to side liberal on social issues and conservative on foreign policy. I personally don't see nickel's worth of difference between the parties. I would even go a step further and say that the parties are the biggest part of the problem. I say this because the parties tend to develop agendas that may or may not have a thing to do with the wishes of the electorate and then ram those agendas down the throats of the people. I, for one, am pretty sick of politicians trying to re-define the constitution. I really don't need a supreme court ruling to understand the meaning of "shall not be infringed."

I do not identify with any political group, because they are all blind to the issues in my opinion. I have been told however that I am Libertarian, and so that is what I have selected here.

The problem with these labels is that they have been tied to non political things. Republican-Conservative-Christian, it's hard to be one without being all three if you want to be a part of that party. Democrat-Liberal-Atheist. Hard again.

My views are simple. Your rights only extend to you, and your Freedoms should not violate others rights. You can have your beliefs so long as you leave me mine. In other words, do what ever you like just get off my lawn!

Probably trending to Libertarian. As a leader I was job-oriented but never forsook the treatment of people as the highest priority. The more bees with honey thing. And I do not believe conservatives hate the poor. Not at all.

I hate the fact I have no party rep at all in D.C. I side with Dems on a lot of social issues, but recently they've been going overboard. I don't believe in gun control, but I do believe in responsibility... if your 3 year old child gets your handgun you left on the coffee table and kills themselves, you should be in jail for negligence and involuntary manslaughter. I don't think a broad-brushed either/or tax system is healthy, as in some cases we should lower taxes and in others we may need to raise them. It's so situational I find it hilarious that people run on either one way or the other, instead of focusing on the situation. I like the idea of renewables but I feel the Democratic party is stuck in the past, as the U.S. lags further behind on carbon allotrope studies (it's the material of the future).

I see good from both parties, but in today's climate you either lockstep or you're a RINO/DINO. So this is what it was like living during the Red Scare.

Mostly libertarian. Sometimes they go a little overboard...but I feel like we can meet in the middle on the big stuff, like stopping billion dollar handouts to large corporations, and then we can have a discussion on whether or not government should fund roads, schools, and police.

I'm a little "L" libertarian because I'm not a member of the Libertarian Party and I'm a big "R" republican because in my state there's pretty much nothing else on the ballet besides Rep or Dem.

My hawkish nature makes me clash with the Libertarian party platform sometimes.

I had to go with libertarian due to the fact their main thing is individual liberty. I’m not pure libertarian, because if you read their platform they.re a little nutty.

I relate most to the Tea Party, but it wasn't an option in the poll.

I vote for the lesser of two evils, which in my opinion is republican. If the scales are tipped enough in the republican favor then I may start voting third party.

The GOP is split into 2 camps:
* One is the old Establishment GOP (RINOs),
* and the other is Tea Party Conservatives that are more Libertarian and who seek a return to the Consitution and vision of our Founding Fathers.

I am for the latter or Libertarian candidate, or Independent < whoever is better.

I will not vote for a Democrat or RINO Republican (like Lindsey Graham, John McCain, John Boehner, etc.) Together with the Democrats, they have fleeced the American people far too long and it's time for CHANGE -- the REAL kind of CHANGE that people can believe in. Not the lies coming from this scandal plagued, fraudulent Admin ( < cue the downvotes). I'm talking about the kind of change that will result in a smaller, more streamlined Federal Gov't that doesn't use its power to spy on its own citizens, rob them of their Constitutional rights, and doesn't use its power of the purse to dictate to the States.

Solid Independent thank you. One of the reasons I like living in Washington state, all mail in ballots with less than .25% attempts at fraud the most recorded levels.
We have politicians that may say which party they prefer but we use the top two of all the voters choices go to the final and then the top one wins. Party be damned, the person and who they are is what matters here anyway.
Learned 43 years ago, there is no such thing as trusting a party. Look into a persons eyes, shake their hand, that is where if paying attention, character shows through. ;)

I am registered independent, however, all the smoke and mirrors garbage from democrats, along with issues that republicans try to actually "make" an issue out of is ridiculous. The current CIC, in my opinion, has damaged our Nation as a whole, severely. His disdain and lack of respect, along with no concept of operational security has given our enemies ammunition and the desire to continue their war on freedom.

I am Libertarian, but they are not "perfect" either. I was Republican, but after the way they treated the best candidate for office last time (Ron Paul) I swore off that party. I will ONLY vote for someone who I feel is the best for the job: Dem, GOP, Independant, or Libertarian. It is not throwing away your vote when you vote minor party, it makes your true vote louder.

I'm pro guns, groups over the individual in possibly socialist ways, pro-science, mandatory military/government service, constitutional standard, big government (health, education, transportation paid by government service), anti political correct, for capital punishment as in back in the gladiators era, freedom of all religions, marriage/union rights (isn't marriage religious?), separation of church and state, separation of sponsor/donor/lobbyist and politician, term limits for all, other energy resources, pro mens/womens right to choose, blue, red and white.

I am a conservative boardering on libertarian in principal. Wen it comes to voting, I follow the advice of William F. Buckley. To papaphrase it he said to campaign for the most conservative candidate and at election time, vote for the more conservative of the two.

Libertarian, just because there is no choice for Centrist or Independent. Veterans' Party of America is a joke, with no real chance of becoming anything. It is too focused on Veteran related issues, and even the name of the Party is non-inclusive.

The Party Leadership is practically non-existent, and they have lost all momentum they once had when it first started. They can not even follow their own Party's By-Laws, and the State and Local Leadership doesn't even exist.

While I chose Libertarian, I actually don't identify with any specific political party, as I do not feel that any of them best represent my personal political views. It takes more then formal education to determine which political candidate to vote for. If you don't start listening and investigating the candidates now by 2016 the only thing you will know about the candidates is what they want you to know. I am a VERY Conservative, ANTI-Gun Control, ANTI-Nanny State, Libertarian. I vote Republican because a Libertarian can not win and is just a vote for a Democrat. I want the Government to STOP the handouts and make everyone responsible for their own actions, go to a flat tax and treat EVERYONE Equal with NO ONE having "Protected Status" so that everyone has true freedom. i'm a registered Democrat & have been my entire life. Having said that, the last Democrat i voted for was Gray Davis for Governor of California. Two years later, I voted to recall him.

I vote in Democrat primaries, but mostly find myself voting AGAINST the candidates put up by the party.

The two major parties are scum, John McCain is about the only Republican I might vote for. The Democrats need to wake up to the fact that their base has moved left. Shumer, Pelosi, and Clinton are more Republican than Democrat. Last election I wasn't able to bring myself for either.

I am an American 1st. I do NOT like party or labels. I vote for ideas not party. Do not tread on me and do not label me. If you cannot speak with me as a man 1st and a human being next without having to label me then you are either too stupid or too confused to understand what it means to be an American.

For those who need labels in order to defend your position on a given issue then you are of no use to me. I love a good discussion (debate) and even if you prove me wrong, not by yelling or insulting me; rather, by presenting your case and presenting facts vs rhetoric and hyperbole then I am honored to have lost the debate, because you have now made me want to work harder to either defend my position; or, come over to your side because to you provided clarity beyond clear that I could not refute.

In short you earned my respect!
