If you plan on getting an overseas job, it will need to be current and active, so try and line up the job so you can roll into it while on transition, that way there is no break and it can be rolled over with ease.</p><p><br></p><p>#4 Probably the most important one I wish I had known, if you don't have a guaranteed job lined up to move right into before retiring, don't go, since you can start the process at almost two years out, start your networking and getting everything set up and lined up about a year out, if you are unable to do that, you may want to consider staying a little longer and moving to a new or higher position if available. I pursued the pathways laid out/recommended for me as a 19K40 and tried to my utmost to ensure that all of my subordinates were set up for success in their careers, but somewhere along the way my superiors kinda forgot about looking out for me. (I know, comes across as sour-grapes and I digress....) I would also have probably told myself not to take the CSB at 15 years so that when I hit 20 and it was becoming evident that I probably wasn't going to be selected for MSG, that I could go ahead and retire at 20 and seek employment as a DA Civilian, to continue working for/with Soldiers. As a Reservist in a multi-compo unit, and somebody who is hiring (or trying to!) people on a regular basis, I think I have some insight. </div><div><br></div><div>#0 Don't be in a hurry. Take the time to plan and have a deliberate transition.</div><div>#1 Decide - What does he want to be when he grows up?  Don't limit to working as a DA civilian, Fed Employee, etc. Nothing wrong with those options, but there is nothing wrong with casting a broader net. </div><div>#2 Figure out what qualifications are required for #1. Do a gap analysis.</div><div>#3 Make a plan to close those gaps. Execute it.</div><div>#4 Do something part-time, volunteer, whatever to ensure that there is some relevant experience that can be talked to during an interview.</div><div>#5 Learn Civilian English. I phrased it that way on purpose. The biggest issue I see when reading resumes, or interviewing, career military is that they don't explain what they did, what skills they have, in a way that the average civilian can relate to. This leads to the hiring manager (or the HR department!!) screening out fantastic candidates because they didn't understand what the heck they said/did. </div><div> <br><br /></div><div>An example </div><div>Company 1SG date- date</div><div>Responsible for the training, professional education, morale, and performance of a 40-person team in an environment with multiple high priority imperatives.  Routinely mentored subordinates on professional development and advised senior leadership on strategic approaches to organizational issues and needs. </div><div>During my tenure:</div><div>     - My company won the [award] for [the thing] due to its [excellent performance]</div><div>     - Was recognized for [a thing] that was significantly better than the standard</div><div>     - Performed [its job] superbly, performing [metric] at or above the standards set by the US Army. The Post 9/11 GI bill is too, but get everything you can while you can. Plan ahead. Know where you want to retire to, work towards it, and have an idea and a backup plan for post-retirement career. <br /><br />Make sure your medical documentation is complete and in order. It is of significant importance as you start your retirement physical to ensure every issue has been documented. This becomes tantamount to a successful VA claim.<br /><br />Attend ACAP and use all the programs and assistance which are available. Create a Linked In Profile and start writing your resume. Make sure to contact the VA for VETS as they provide great service and support for resume creation both for Federal and civilian jobs.<br /><br />Be prepared for the "slow down." As an infantry 1SG I am certain he is high speed low drag. The civilian world operates at a different pace. <br /><br />That is an off the top of my head response. Good luck!
