Retirement in the Military

As of last year, the total number of personnel retired from Active Duty service was 1,551,844. The types of retirement typically vary across each branch. Do any of these statistics surprise you?

Honestly, it would be more useful express these statics as they relate within each branch. For example, what is the percentage of Army retirees on permanent disability as a percentage of total Army retirees. Same for non and temp within the Army population. Then do the same for the rest of the branches. Then you could compare these percentages to each branch by branch.

Nope makes sense all of it. Air force, majority no disability, get it. Navy same, get it. Marines and Army, by the size of the service. still makes sense. Don't know what temporary retirement is though.

I, like SSG Private RallyPoint Member was not sure how the numbers make sense...they don't add up by service. Then I started going by category....hey math was never my strong point. It gets to around mid 90s (or some room for error) in each category (to be honest I stopped after 2). Would love some clarification on that because the numbers don't add up by service.

If someone completely gets the chart, please expound.

There is no way that the Air Force has exactly the same number of enlisted and officer stats through all three catagories. Never heard of temporary retirement. Why not do a chart with all 5 branches and show officers vs enlisted / active / disabled / gray area?

I don't understand what "temporary retirement" means. Why don't they include disability retirement?

The Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL) is a list of Service Members found to be unfit for performance of military duty by reason of physical disability which may be permanent, but which has not sufficiently stabilized to permit an accurate assessment of a permanent degree of disability. The secretary of the navy is required by law to maintain the TDRL, and has delegated responsibility for this function to PERS-82.

So it states this is as of 2013... going back how far? What is the time span on this information?

Not only do the numbers not add up, they are wrong. There are over 800,000 Retired Soldiers plus more than 100,000 more Guard and Reserve Soldiers who have qualified for retired pay but are waiting to age 60 to start collecting it.
