Returning to service from the Individual Retired Reserves... anybody done it? How was it?

Any one in the IRR, how is it working for you. Been contacted by an IRR recruiter yet to volunteer. Anyone Volunteered to go back in and serve a tour. If so how did that work out. Been retired for Seven years now, going through Army Withdraw.

Top, I have only seen one person do this before and come out for a tour. That was to receive his O-6. He went into IRR and back for a deployment before retiring for good. I have seen retention though try to get people out of the IRR. Nobody retired though.

Assuming you are a gray-area retiree, check out http://www.apd.army.mil/jw2/xmldemo/r140_10/main.asp#ch6 for details about transferring from Retired Reserves to Individual Ready Reserves (I do like your conflation of the two though ... ;):

If you are an active duty retiree, the AR 601-10 applies (http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r601_10.pdf) (you're not transferring, you're doing a retiree recall)

I thought IRR stood for "Individual READY Reserve."

I am a Reserve Career Counselor here in Spokane. I have assisted several retired service members come out of the retired reserves into a TPU unit. I am not sure the process to come out of the IRR just for an active tour, but I know we have a packet that needs to be filled out to transfer into a reserve position. Fell free to send me a message and I can email you a copy of the packet and assist you with the process if you are interested. We would have to find you a position here in this area first, but I am able to look that up for you as well.

After I separated in 1984, I returned to Active Duty in 2001. I had a very bad case of culture shock, even worse than when I separated in 1984! I kept asking, "What did they do to the Army?" to make matters worse, my first assignment was a Basic Training Battalion! Gone were the days of calling Soldiers "Trainee" until they completed Initial Entry Training; Soldiers had 30 minutes to eat, instead of being through with chow when the DS told you, you were through! Plus, Soldiers had a hour of "Free Time" prior to going to bed at 2100 hrs., not to be disturbed until 0530 the next day! It still makes me almost break out in hives just thinking about it! Many of the Company Commanders laughed at me because I went through BCT before most of them were even born! So, if you are seriously thinking about it, remember "Semper Gumby!"
