I can honestly say, when I hear the bugle call in the morning, it gets me motivated to serve Duty Honor Country.

To me, the sound of reveille still stirs those feelings of duty, honor, country. Might sound corny to some, but there it is.

To me it means two things. First is Damn! It's already that time and secondly is Well I guess I better get up if I want breakfast. Oh and it was never a bugle but rather a Boatswains pipe and the 1MC.

To me it means I have the honor of standing up for the flag a symbol of freedom. Quite simply it means my day can begin. I look forward to it everyday and ensure all others render the proper respect as well.

I use to love hearing all the bugle calls. Reveille, chow call, colors and taps. Bases are getting away from the tradition because of complaints from families that live on base. Thats like saying the aircraft and artillery need silencers as well.
Short story here. I was the unit commander of a Young Marines unit. We went on an encampment with the regiment, maybe 6-7 units in all. We happen to have a Young Marine that knew most of the bugle calls. So at 0600 we had him blow reveille. As the kids were getting ready I noticed an elderly couple outside their trailer watching them. I went over to apologize to them for waking them. The gentleman was almost in tears. He said it had been so long since he heard reveille blown. He talked a bit about his time in the Army. His wife mentioned to us that he was looking forward to hearing it again the next morning. We didn't disappoint.

When you hear it we know we are a free populace and it is time to get up and at it!!!

When I hear it anymore I get a little sad. Our installation has went to playing Reveille only, ( I cant for the life of me think of the 2nd song that was played after) and with this it has been okayed to continue driving/walking as it sounds. I feel like a little piece of our customs and courtesies are slowly dying, I'm sure they had some reasoning to it as it has suck around for about 3 years and 2 wing commanders, but it just irritates me a little bit.

It was the sound I loved to hate every morning. Granted, we were generally up and doing PT before reveille, but still.

In Vietnam, ofall places, on those rare occasions when Igot to visit my base camp, I had a room in a wood and sandbag one story building. There was a high berm and on the other side was the Hq of 5th ARVN Division. So I would hear French Bugle Calls throughout the day. Their Reville would play in my head through most of the day
