Why? They have gone from an economically frail country to a very rich country based on their newly discovered oil drilling capabilities. They have huge oil fields that are literally refueling their income. And we know what money can do! I would hope to God if he did order the use of nukes that a General or someone in charge refuses to pass on the launch orders. I would inform him that the United States has a large number of nuclear weapons. Our position in this matter is, the United States would consider any nuclear attack on the Ukraine or NATO Allies to be an attack on the United States and we would act accordingly. Putin may be an extreme narcissist, but he is not stupid. It would appear to me that he is using these threats of nuclear weapons as a tool to get us to stop supporting the Ukrainian people. Call his bluff and see who blinks first. A dangerous move but one that must be taken or we will forever be abandoning our allies because of threats of nuclear weapons by Russia. If we don't stop him in the Ukraine, then when? Where is the line in the sand? The coast of the United States? NATO's forces far outgun Russia's conventional forces. We have learned a lot in the last year about how badly trained Russia's armed forces have become, largely due to corrupt senior leadership under Putin and his fellow kleptocrats.
The Western democracies also far outgun everyone else in nuclear weapons. If Russia uses nukes against Ukraine, the Russian forces in Ukraine will be destroyed. Putin has made a huge foolish mistake and his hubris and giant ego won't let him back down. I think that Putin will be overthrown or assassinated in the not-too-distant future.
