I remember my first day coming through the gate at Ft. Lee back in 1997 when I was assigned there for CLOAC. As a Marine officer, I was not used to the saluting slogans that the Army used. When the soldier at the gate saluted me, and since Ft. Lee is a TRADOC post, he said "train to fight sir!". Not knowing how to reply, I quickly said "shoot to kill, sergeant!". I remember laughing later when I discussed it with my Army colleagues and thought that since many units have their own slogans (82nd, 101st, 3rd ACR, etc...) that Sergeant must have wondered what sort of awesome unit has "shoot to kill" as their slogan

MSG Private RallyPoint Member, my favorite has always been, "Airborne, Sir!" and the response, "All the way!" A true story goes with mine, though.
I finished jump school in April 1970 and after SF training at Fort Bragg, I returned to my unit. A number of years later, I went to OCS and was commissioned in June, 1973. One afternoon soon after, I was walking down a street at Fort McClellan, AL and a grizzled old airborne sergeant first class passed me, saluted and said, "Airborne, sir!" I wasn't used to being saluted and I couldn't recall the airborne return greeting. I was three steps passed him before I remembered, "All the way!" and threw my hand up. I can still hear him laughing!

For me it's always a greeting that makes the custom have meaning beyond an arm movement. When the statement is something along the lines of a genuine check on their soldier/sailor I was alway impressed

Can be said with different inflections to mean different things.
Loud Deep and Proud = Hell Yeah!
Just loud top of the lunges = Let Us Go!
Quick and loud = Okay
With pregnant pause = f off
Quite and fast = what ever or who cares
Slow and quite = bad day

I love catching them off guard, yelling at the top of my lungs: "Good Morning, Sir!!!! Rahhhh-Motivate-Kill!!"

They usually mumble something, not expecting such enthusiasm.

I liked what we said in the 82d Airborne Division: I (enlisted guy) said, "All the way, sir!" The officer replied, "Airborne!" Short, sweet, and to the point.
