Two years passed before it was alleged that Sergeant Barbera killed two unarmed civilians in 2007. After investigating the Army concluded that murder charges were not appropriate and resolved the case in 2010. Witnesses against Sgt Barbera were considered unreliable and evidence supported the fact that the individuals shot were in fact enemy combatants.

Three years later the Army charged Sgt Barbera with two counts of murder. These charges seem to have been brought about because of pressure from members of Congress responding to articles written by a reporter, Mr. Carl Prine. It seems as if Mr. Pine had written several articles based on the allegations in the original investigation.

I have included a link to one of many articles about this case including an interview on NPR with the reporter.

There is also a Petition to Congress asking that all charges against Sergeant First Class Michael Barbera be dropped. http://www.change.org/petitions/u-s-house-of-representatives-drop-all-charges-against-innocent-soldier-sergeant-first-class-michael-barbera

I always find it interesting when "congress" tries to apply rules to war. What they really need to comprehend is that the First rule is "The enemy will not follow your rules"

Especially a Congress in which most members have never served in the Military in any capacity.

I find it absolutely ludicrous that they would reopen this case. He was cleared of these charges and it should have stayed that way unless they had some rock solid evidence against him, in which they did not!It would be nice if the government fought this hard to support and take care of our soldiers as apposed to ruining their reputations. Unfortunately even when Michael is cleared of these charges he will have this follow him around for the rest of his life. He should be called a hero, not a murderer.

Ms. Buschhardt, since you are not "corrupted" in the eyes of our civilian leaders, you may have a louder voice than veterans and active duty personnel since we are "biased." Just ask almost any politician. Let your voice be heard mam!
