In a recent Armytimes Article:

Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey wants to bring back the iconic Eisenhower jacket, and he needs your help. In a new survey to the force, Dailey wants to hear if soldiers like the idea of the waist length jacket made popular by Gen. Dwight Eisenhower during World War II.
The proposed jacket would “add one layer of etiquette” for soldiers who may need to go from the Class Bs to a more formal appearance without transitioning to the full Army Service Uniform jacket, Dailey said.
“I like it from a historical standpoint, history and honor,” Dailey said. “Eisenhower introduced the khaki version, and even though we’re in the blues today, it’s back to it.”
In addition to the Eisenhower jacket, the survey being sent to the force also will seek soldier feedback on several other uniform changes, including gender neutral head gear and black socks with the new PT uniform.
“We want to make sure soldiers get a chance to express their opinion,” Dailey said. “It was very important to the [Army chief of staff] and myself for soldiers to know we’re listening to them.”
The survey will go out to soldiers’ military email addresses in batches beginning this week, and it will likely be up for at least two weeks, or until a large enough portion of the force has responded, Dailey said. Even though Dailey has said he is “not going to be the uniform Sergeant Major,” he is pushing these potential changes to uniform items and wear in response to soldier feedback.
“I think we need an era of stabilization,” Dailey has said, even as the Army rolls out a new PT uniform and a new camouflage pattern for the Army Combat Uniform.
However, Dailey also is looking at how these changes could boost morale across the force.
“If you can raise motivation by fixing things that don’t really have a negative effect on the standards and discipline of the Army, why not?” Dailey said.

So much for keeping it simple... The Ike Jacket is nice... but the windbreaker is fine...

As I said in another post... DS hat should be up to females. Like the Ike Jacket, the female DS hat has a history. The service cap, that makes sense, but again the unisex hat we need to ensure the females want a unisex hat. Socks make sense. SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL

It looked good with the WWII browns. I find it unappealing in the ASU color scheme. Also, the Ike jacket is part of my law enforcement dress uniform. It constantly rides up from the waist and does not breath well because it is gathered at the waist.

What an unprofessional model was used by the army times to project a uniform change, his atire looks as though it's on it's way to Goodwill, the uniform needs to look inviting, the soldier/model needs to be "stract" (sp). Creases sharp, front of jacket, dementionally pleasing. What E-7 does'nt have at least three rows of ribbons and a couple badges to help sell the "Ike", I think the uniform jacket is a super idea, But let's sell it correctly, The Army Way.

It will cost the taxpayers millions, and it will cost current service members millions as well.

What I mean is that the taxpayers foot the bill to have these jackets "developed" and manufactured, then issued to brand new soldiers.

The second part is that the manufacturers and retailers selling these jackets to current service members will gouge us with steep prices, because they can. None of our current uniform items, whatever they may be, are actually worth the price put on them. $107 for a pair of basic (issue type) Altima desert boots, $78 for a poncho liner, or $28 for a recruiter or DS badge? Ridiculously high prices there!

Nah, I think I will pass on yet another uniform change. We have enough transitions and additions going on as it is.

I think bringing back all-star uniforms are cool but ultimately incredibly expensive we have to remember where in the deficit right now and we've changed the military uniform several times over the last 10 years to change it again with me and another insurmountable amount of money if they higher-ups want to change the look what do we have to say about it really I just don't think it's a viable idea due to the monetary situation

It's all high speed and good until some local CDR makes a "nice" policy on it ala the current ACU/Multicam fiasco. I think it looks great until due to said policies it's an item that sits in the closet and really never gets worn or you find them at the local Army/Navy store for sale. SMA's heart IS in the right place with good ideas, but with the drawdowns, and other things hitting the Army hard, there are many other ways to raise morale and maybe later on, get this item in the approved to wear list.

I think this is a silly idea in this day and age due to not only monetary concerns but of how often the Class A/B uniform is even worn. Nonetheless, even if the Class A/B uniform was worn on a regular basis, then maybe it would be a decent idea, but we already have a sweater and/or lightweight jacket. I know the AF has two style of sweaters and the light weight jacket. I think that is perfectly fine.

I like the idea of a practical uniform. There has been so much improvement in materials.
As a young MP we had to have Class A jackets tailored so the MP pistol belt laid properly.
I did love breaking starch in cotton fatigues and the quality of the TW Khaki uniforms.

I think the IKE jacket should remain a historic item. Some things shouldn't be revived. The IKE jacket only looks good if your cut, looking around post lately I'm not seeing many soldiers that are svelt. I had one my dad gave me and wore it as a camp coat for years minus the rank it was great for that, but it had a tendency to ride up in both front and back.

UNIFORM CHANGES??? How about dealing with the training issues, such as the lack of discipline in some units, or combat skills training, professionalism towards all or just STOP BEING SO POLITICALLY CORRECT? They need to be trained for combat and able to defend our nation-NOT have what uniform for what day. Good God, we are in war in Iraq and now maybe Syria. Get your heads out of your '4th point of contact' and get your acts together; forget the uniforms and INVEST in our soldiers' training so they can do their jobs properly.

Just ran across this old post. When I was a kid back in the 50's we begged our dads and uncles for their cool Ike jackets. By the time I enlisted they were gone and that was a disappointment. I would have been a fan of bringing them back when Greens were replaced - BUT - not as a part of the Civil War Suit family of uniforms rather as part of the army traditional Pinks and Greens option.

The jacket as presented is disastrously tailored nor are any insignia, badges, or awards(except for rank insignia and crooked hash marks) to give it a real life perspective. The message appears to be "This thing looks awful, do you all want it adopted for wear?" The only bright side is the presence of what would appear to be traditional epaulets. That infers that the officer version would return to wearing metal rank insignia on them rather than the rank straps of the current ASU. That would be a good thing.

Ok, I'm retired but here goes.

The green class A uniform was a good uniform. It was the logical evolution of the WWII dress uniform, and it looked distinctly Army. The dress blues were reserved for formal events, and looked good for their intended purpose. You lost a lot of unit identity with the blues, but it was the Army tux.

When they forced the ASU on us it was the worst of both worlds. A white dress shirt is not a 'working' uniform shirt for the Army. The ASU looks too civilian in terms of color and cut. It looks more like a police uniform as most of the blue ones feature gold or yellow trim. Then they took away unit patches sand tabs because you don't wear those with the dress blue uniform, but they added service and overseas stripes? Someone please make up their minds. In addition, the material is too thin and it shows every speck of lint.

Now the SMA wants the Army to look like upscale hotel wait staff? Someone PLEASE make this go away.

The Army has given up so much in historical value. The Marines keep their dress uniform because historical it has a meaning. I feel your idea has merit and the U.S. Army needs to do something to bring back a dress uniform with meaning. the more we change , the more we lose.

It would be good for the AF to do also. I'm out but when I was still in U went and got the good Class As and then had my issue Class A jacket cut into an Ike Jacket.
I only wore it as a Staff a few months before I got the new Polyester Class As . I was O'seas at my 2d tour((Thailand) and I hadn't brought my Class As, So I had to have the folks send them It took 3 weeks. I got my stripes put on and we had a Cmdrs call at base theater.. it was comfortable even with that uniform. As soon as we had our group pic taken and gotten out of formation.. I got back into my work uniform and took my blus back to my quarters.. when the Cmdr. Had his last Cmdr's call We had to get them out again... S'body said some choice words to a higher ranking officer after the Cmdr had departed the base(to avoid repercussion from him) . He was going TDY to Bankok then PCs'g .. s'how word got to him about the Sr. NCO who had confided in that Sr OFCr before he the SrNCO himself Pcs'd a couple days later.
That former Cmdr went through the trouble to track that SrNCO down at his new duty station and tell his new Cmdr how he didn't give his former cmdr the courtesy of a heads up he was going over his head. What transpired after that point I can only wonder what the new cmdr thought of his new SrNCO and the former cmdr after he heard the details of what transpired at the former base.. such petty stuff to get upset over. There were several who sent home for our jackets.
Some even bought new uniforms, One guy bought new and then sold it to a guy from another squadron shipping out to Alaska... that worked out good. I didn't want to pack my mind so I packaged it.back in the same box and put new labels and sent it to myself at my new duty station it got there two days after I did.. free !

I agree with the concept, but seriously, how often do you see commanders authorizing class Bs for daily wear? The leadership has got so lazy when it comes to the wear of the uniform, and the general appearance of soldiers, we look a sack of potatoes (potatos? Hope my career is not ruined!). all just because they are easier to wear. When you see generals wearing what is designed to be a working uniform while in public, you know that the Army has lost its sense of appropriateness. You jonw, I graduated in ACU's from my branch school because the Commandant decided that we were "an Army at war", that was the tackiest graduation ever. Good luck with that one!

Does anybody in the chain up there have a brain cell. Listen to soldiers. They are tired of uniform changes after uh inform changes after unfiorm changes. It's cost millions for no reason. Only uniform that should get any attention is the combat uniform to make it more effective in combat. Same for weapons. It's not rocket science. The manufacturers have done the work & testing & competing, pick 1. But the uniform searching needs to stop. High up wanted the asu & they got it & thought it was too formal for everyday wear in the office. Deal with it. The class a greens worked fine. The Marines & navy haven't changed uniforms in decades. We are not the fashion military. We are the US military. 1 military. Should be 1 standard uniform for everyone & variants per special missions.

My personal opinion is to stop with all the changes . Even as a SFC it gets expensive to buy the uniform have it tailored, and buy all the candy to put on the uniforms. So for our soldiers who alot of them struggle as is this would just add to the Bills. We are in the middle of switching up the duty uniform and are still and will for many years be mismatched with ACU gear . If we must make changes let get OCP gear to the CIF facilities so we look like a fighting force not a rag bag of mismatched people running around. Help us look professional on the daily missions. Once we get us all looking professional in our duty uniform let's switch to being able to properly maintain our equipment without it being an episode of barter kings behind the scenes to get parts. So I say NO to a new uniform. Let focus on the basics to ensure we have a professional looking army, that is trained and proficient in their MOS, and focus on area that really need attention.

I wish the Army or at least someone would listen to reason. The ACU uniform was a disaster, the new cammo is great. Leave it and the current dress uniform for at least another 50 years. Think how much those funds could be diverted to other things. If you want to ask the troops about something, ask them what they would prefer those funds be spent on. Also, get rid of anything that would require specific funds to be spent on so that there aren’t uniform specific funding. I’m sure that is why there was such a long period of time that a uniform change was made in my grand parents age. Too much stuff gets washed in specific funding. More uniform changes can be a financial burden to a junior soldier with a family. Trust me, my uniform allowances didn't go far when we had to transition from BDU to ACUs. I acquired ACU uniforms from an ETSing soldier and spent my meager $200ish allowance on boots.

Of course I was also that moron first year in with $700 in car payment every month. What a hard lesson to learn, but learn I did.

We need to leave the uniforms alone, all of them. Yes the Ike jacket is nice but we have more important things to do other than trying to look “pretty”. We spend a lot of time doing our quarterly 350-1 mandatory training, we don’t get to train our Soldiers on combat skills in the support arena as we should. We need to teach how to run analog systems and brake the dependency on technology. I’ve seen units shut down because technology failed and people didn’t have an analog backup system. Uniforms is the last thing we need to worry about now. Want to increase morale? Stop the segregation when we go go to the field. Forget the gender brake down, we are all Soldiers and when we share in hard ships we become family. Worrying about another uniform change is not going to increase morale, it’s another stress of paying for something we don’t need. Yes we get a clothing allowance every year and we have uniforms to replace already and bots to buy. This is just another way to take focus away from what we need to do. Take care of our Soldiers and keep them focused on their mission.

As much as I love the old Ike jacket, this is a bad idea for several reasons. First, the Army has already gone through more clothing changes than a Broadway play cast. Second, while the Ike jacket looks great in OD green, in blue, it makes Soldiers in the class B uniform look even more like mall cops. Third, this will no doubt replace the current black jacket, which was one of the few good uniform changes to come down over the last few years. Finally, how much will this jacket cost, and which Army budget will it come out of?

I was in the Service from 1948 through 1971 and the Ike Jacket was my favorite. You could sleep in it all night and it still looked sharp the next morning. It could be soaking wet and it would still keep out the cold. I wore the Ike Jacket under my Field Jacket and my OD trousers under my Fatigues at the Chosin Reservoir during the Battle of Chosin from late November to 24 December 1950 and survived 20 to 40 below zero weather. The Ike Jacket I wore was Olive Drab, 100 percent heavy tight woven wool and stood up to all weather conditions. We put hooks on the jacket's waist to hook to our belt so when you bent over your shirt didn't pop out. It needed very little maintenance, only cleaned occasionally. It was a very tough piece of clothing. I hope it makes a comeback.

So, here would be the tally for a Soldier retiring in, say, 2022 after 25 years of service if the Ike jacket was approved. Some of my dates may be a little off, and I may have missed a few things.

1) Complete APFU change in the early 2000s
2) Army-wide issue of black berets in the early 2000s
3) Change to ACUs in the mid-late 2000s, elimination of BDUs
4) Elimination of DCUs in the mid-late 2000s
5) Modification/expansion of Dress Blues into the current ASU suite of uniforms, late 2000s
6) Multi-Cam ACUs for OEF deployments in 2010-ish
7) Elimination of the black beret for wear with ACUs in 2011-ish
8) Elimination of Class As/Bs by 2014-15
9) Near-complete APFU change 2017-17
10) Possible approval of an Ike jacket, date TDB

Wow. . . . how does a Soldier keep up with all this? At one point, the Army was considering the possibility of bringing back the entire World War II era uniform, not just the Ike jacket. Could we please just put, say, a 10 year pause on major uniform changes of any kind, particularly when it comes to dress uniforms? Whether or not changes to a dress uniform will improve morale is completely subjective, even if it involves poll and research, and it certainly does nothing to increase the lethality and readiness of our Army. Utility and PT uniforms are a different story, and some of the changes have been positive and beneficial. I don't recall having a lot of conversations with my peers about how our BDUs and DCUs were absolutely horrible, but we were definitely happy for improvements like a long sleeve T-shirt for our PTs.

Expand this across the total force and look at the facts: each service fielded new (and completely different) utility uniforms in the past 15 years, with the Army and Navy changing multiple times. How much money has been spent on all of this? How many labor hours have been spent with testing, contracting, logistics, disposition of old uniform supplies, etc.?

I'm kind of liking it...I agree that our Army uniform needs to be re-designed. I have always liked the Marines uniform dress. I'm not sure if the dark blue goes well with the lighter blue slacks though? I strongly believe in traditional standards, but I am not sure I would want to go back to the "tan" (khaki) again though. I think the head gear should be the same for all meaning both genders. There, my 2 cents....so far....

I appreciate that SMA Dailey is interested in getting soldier feedback.
As A Cadet at Georgia Military College in the late 1970s we wore the Ike Jacket as our Class A uniform. It never fit me right as I am barrel chested and short waisted. Try as I might I was never able to exchange a jacket that fit me right. I always looked like Joe Shit the Ragman.
Not every soldier will be able to wear this uniform Jacket.
For what it is worth, my opinion is that if a throwback uniform is approved the Pink and Greens would be a far better choice.

I think it looks great, however this is the type of uniform that wont look good on all Soldiers. If the Soldier is overweight, then he or she would stick out like a sore thumb. This is the type of jacket that will force many to lose weight. I think this is why so many leaders in the US Army dont like the Mess Dress Blues (besides the price). I had Mess Dress Blues when i was in, and i would definitely buy them.

Khakis would be my choice, especially as a "travel" uniform. The poly/cotton ones I wore in the late '70's were fairly comfortable and I thought looked great!

Really bad idea. The look great as long as you don't move. They were a constant problem with shirt tails hanging out. The Army green uniform set was great and never should have been changed. We are acting like the CEO that came up with the new Coke as an ego boost and that was a total failure. There is a good reason the "Ike" jacket went away.

I don't favor it if it will be in blue. The "dress blue" uniform (ASU) should be for more formal occasions whereas the retro "pinks and greens" (P&Gs) should be for more everyday wear. If they are going to have the hip length belted jacket of the P&Gs as the new "Class A" uniform then the Ike jacket could be an optional purchase item. One problem is that we are going from one to two "jacket and tie uniforms" when 99% of the Army wears ACUs 99% of the time. Yes, I like the Ike jacket (and wish I were slimmer and trimmer so I'd look good wearing one) but I don't know if it would be worth the trouble unless a fair majority of soldiers want to wear it.

This entire uniform thing with him is ludicrous, yes the uniforms look sharp, but are we ready to deploy and engage in close combat? I say no.

We need to focus on readiness, not uniforms and dress jackets. I’m only a few years from being eligible to retire, and I’m thankful, I have changed uniforms numerous times since being in and NEVER ONCE did the change improve readiness. The SMA is wrong and it’s toxic.

Bring back the Ike Jacket? As a distinct uniform item for our Senior NCO’s by all means. Navy Chiefs have their distinctive head gear and a simple change of the badge denotes their rank/grade. Thus the Ike Jacket would be a means to recognize our E-7, E-8, and E-9 senior NCO’s. Even go so far as to remove the chevrons from the sleeves and place rank pins on the lapels under the US and Branch discs. On the lower sleeves at the cuffs, E-7’s would be authorized 1 gold piping, E-8’s 2 gold piping, and E-9’s 3. Senior NCO’s are more financially able to absorb these uniform changes also. This ole soldiers 2 cents.

I like the dress uniform as is. I've edited this to include that I didn't know the khakis had been discontinued. If they could be brought back in the sweat free material that someone mentioned below, that would be great. They were a great look in warmer weather. I'm still in favor of keeping the heavier dress uniform as is. I also think the old dress cover is a better look than the beret that is now the standard. I tried a beret on once for a girlfriend of mine; it was the most uncomfortable piece of headwear I ever put on as well as offering little or no shield from heat or rain.

Bad idea! Young soldiers and you officers don’t need to waste more money on another uniform. When I was commissioned I lost my clothing allow. My one time $300 allowance did cover one set of class A’s. I was a former SSG, married with two kids and I was making my pennies scream. When I retired after 30 years combined as an EM and O, the one time clothing allowance was STILL $300. Honestly don’t know if it’s gone up but there is not a junior NCO or Junior O that is not having to manage his budget tightly if he has a family. If you want higher moral, stop all the things that take the focus of readiness, stop all the social engineering, stop wasting slots at SFAS and Ranger school, stop trying to screw retirees at every opportunity. You want high moral? Train to fight and win wars not appease every libtard with a good idea. General Eisenhower was a great leader that always considered the impact on junior service members- NO Eisenhower jacket and no pinks!

No to the Ike Jacket. Please, remember that every time you makes changes to the uniform you put an additional financial burden on the younger soldiers beyond the yearly clothing allowance and you once again change the identity of the Army.

Start with the identity part. The Department of the Navy including the Marine Corp wear their heritage, lineage and honors each time they put on their uniform. People know who they are, where they’ve been, what they’ve done and who can be counted on. The Army uniform has changed so many times, especially in the last 40 years, a lot of times people think we’re security guards. Hollywood hasn’t even got the new generation of uniforms correct. I’ve seen uniforms worn with officer shoulder boards and NCO rank sewn on. I would really like the public know who they are looking at and what they are looking at. This blue uniform has become recognizable as the Army. There are enough variations to accommodate different occasions, mess dress, class A and class B. And it doesn’t look half bad. The old lime green class A shirt wore me out.

The cost of adding another required item to the clothing bag starts to wear thin. The clothing allowance allocated doesn’t even cover the up keep and replacement of the current items. Now it would be required to add another item at the cost of a few hundred dollars. That money comes directly from the soldiers pocket. I know soldiers get paid pretty good these days but, how about enough already.

So, SGM of the Army, how about the uniform input you leave the Army with be, pride, heritage and tradition as reflected in a constant uniform?

Bring back "Pinks and Greens" for Class A. Get us out of that horrible Dress Blue Class A. That was a really bad choice for a Class A uniform, very clumsy to wear with those shoulder boards, etc. Not sure the short Ike jacket is the best style, would rather see a longer jacket. The Ike jacket looks a lot like the Prince Charlie coatee worn with the Scots kilt, doesn't look great on everyone. Need a jacket that goes below the waist.

Stop wasting all that money on uniform changes. In the 10 years I have been out, the Army has gone through a number of uniform changes (BDU's, PTs, Dress). Why don't they spend that money on raising the lower enlisted salary?

I think a more fiscally conservative perspective should be adopted when proposing formal uniform changes. Formal uniforms have a hefty price tag, both for taxpayers and Soldiers, especially the junior enlisted. In addition to the material itself, there is the cost of having the uniform tailored to fit the individual Soldier along with any new accessories such as the combat badge with the ASUs.

For higher-ups I don't think the question should be "what do I think is the best formal uniform for Soldiers to wear" but rather "is the cost of time and money to implement a new formal uniform a good expenditure of resources?" Instead of spending more money to reinvent formal uniforms, why not spend it on more worthwhile expenditures? Getting a bigger paycheck, having nicer living areas and dining facilities, and getting the best possible training for deployments and mobilizations will improve Soldiers' morale far more then a new formal uniform.

I have yet to meet a Soldier (officer and enlisted) who is happy to spend hundreds of dollars on a new formal uniform. Buying replacement duty uniforms is already a big enough expenditure for Soldiers. There's no fiscal sense in compounding this burden by making Soldiers buy new formal uniforms every few years on top of that.

Waste of money that can be spend in other areas. The Ike jacket of WW2 probably was created to save material, not for aesthetic. Work on a better BDUs that last longer and please bring back the black leather boots. Soldiers always look good with a pair of a glassy shine pair of jump boots and press BDUS.

Looks like a Civil War era uniform. The blues already accomplish that for you, so why another? For it to work, you'd have to go back to a taller trouser with suspenders. Otherwise it would separate at the waist continually and with the white shirt look terrible. And in the end all you'd have is another dress uniform to maintain.

No! My God. We keep changing uniforms! It's so hard for the NG& Reserves. We don't get a clothing allowance unless you're an officer otherwise it gets ordered and lost 3 times. Then they just give you the wrong size. The unit is supposed to pay for alterations but it almost always doesn't get paid! So you do it yourself or pay for. We end up sticking out like sore thumbs next to active duty.

I like the Ike jacket, but let it be green so it's more usable to the average soldier. Looks like it's an alternate to the dress blue jacket in this photo. Not every soldier has blues, but they all have greens.

How many uniforms is the Army going to have and why bother. I thought the point of the ACU/ASU was to simplify uniforms and cut cost. I do think the class B uniform with the white shirt is not a good look. I do believe all service members should have access to all the types of uniforms ClassA, Dress blue/ASU, class B etc if the army is going to have that many uniforms. Going to a Army Ball with everyone wearing multiple different uniforms seems very disorganized. I bet the Marines don’t go for that look. I also think it a culture thing. I hate when I turn a football game on and all the others services are in a nice looking class A, Dress blue, class B and the army guy is in some version of an ACU. If your going to issue uniforms you should be wearing them. I use to work at a unit that sheared a building with marines every time they left the building they were in class B minimum, you never saw them driving around in combat uniforms. I think the army can take a lesson from that. It looks more professional. Just my opinion.

Black socks for PT? What about those w Athletes Foot? One of the first thing folks are told to do is change to white socks & change them twice a day (more if in a wet environment.) One of my parents' close friends had such bad Athletes Foot during WWII, that he was told to pee on his feet. It cleared it where none of the available drugs could. So, now you know what to do.

Really bad idea. There were good reasons to discontinue that uniform item. Looks great on a model but in actual use on real people looked sloppy. Our green uniform ensemble was great and known worldwide. I have no idea why we changed and this nostalgia with WWII uniforms is nuts. Bring back riding boots, jodhpurs? This costs millions better spent on more training ammunition! We will not kill a lot of enemies with our fashion and style.

I can only answer this question as a US Marine who was issued a "Battle Jacket" in Boot Camp of 1964. The Corps was phasing them out and If supply had your size then you got one, along with (1) Dress Green Blouse and if not then you were issued 2 Dress Green Blouses (Jackets) I learned to hate it! I couldn't wear it on liberty or in formation. it was only good for junk on the bunk inspections and wasting my money sewing new chevrons on after a promotion!
