Does Sewing on name tapes, rank, us army tape, and skill badges really make the uniform more professional? or did the change in standard stem from being told you couldn't display badges in a combat environment?
Aside from the initial investment, it is much easier to go with what the uniform was originally designed for.
When I was awarded the Basic Parachutist Badge in the BDU era, I couldn't wait to go and sew it on. I'm not quite so enthusiastic now with ACU's.
Far too often I see someone with everything sewn on, and say their Recruiter Badge is crooked, or the sewn on name tape looks as wrinkled as an old velcro one. It might make more sense to have it sewn on, and those badges can get pricey if you can brush out chips in them with sta-black and might in the long run be cheaper (quite the contrary for what was briefed as to why we went to velcro in the first place); but does it really look better? If that's the case, lets do away with the velcro on SSI. Those nasty frayed edges would clean up nicely with an iron on it.
A bit of a side note: all or nothing mentality put aside, wouldn't it make more sense in the long run to allow me to sew on name and branch, and leave my rank and badges alone? As the latter two groups are subject to change and the former are not?

Honestly, I sewed them on my whole career. I was grumpy when I couldn't wear a CAB and EFMB together anymore but pin-on pain is too painful. My wife is going straight to heaven for all the sewing she has done.

I am glad they allowed us to sew them on. Velcro was very hideous. We should have never done velcro. I do think you look more professional with them sewn on. Even for the skill badges. But my opinion on the skill badges has been for the longest time, they should really only need to be worn or seen on the dress uniform. Not on the utility uniform.

I've got to agree with the hideousness, sir. I would also put forth that the pile side (on the uniform) is never the same length as the name tape so that the name tape would either get stuck to the sleeve patches or the zipper cover patch in the center. I'm so much happier with the sew on.

You make solid valid point. I strongly believe that sewn on patches by far looks better than the standard Velcro, but price can be a huge concern after a while. It cost sometimes to be different and stand out. No one said it'll be easy and pain free go above and beyond because if it was than everyone would be sewing their name tapes and other uniform tabs on.

As of yet, I am seeing more that Sewn on patches do not look better, they just are less prone to common human error for placement. As far as skill badges, the pin on badges look much sharper provided they're positioned correctly
