Should Dylann Roof receive death penalty?

He massacred 9 souls inside the Church. While South Carolina laws allow for death penalty, many church members and many on the outside offer forgiveness. Aside from costs and resources, and the fact that he may fully deserve it, do you still think he should live or not? Let's be objective and respectful, and may justice prevail regardless of the punishment awarded.

PO1 Private RallyPoint Member I a firm believer in the death penalty for these types of crimes, but even that is flawed in our country. We have prisoners sitting on death row for years and we pay for that as taxpayers. I believe when someone has committed a crime that hainus and he or she are convicted and sentenced to death, and then the execution should be carried out in a timely manner. That is just my opinion. Some will agree and some won't because of the appeal process/due process afforded all of our sentenced criminals.

Does he deserve it? Absolutely. Should he get it? I think that in some ways, it would cheapen the forgiveness extended by the victims' families. If they don't want it, then I vote no.

I'm a firm believer that the Death Penalty should exist, specifically to put "rabid dogs down" or to remove the "monsters under the bed."

Based solely on the current information available, this case qualifies.

My caveat is that we must be absolutely sure, as you can't undo the Death Penalty. That means ANY doubt should take it off the table, including mental health, unreliable witnesses, etc.

There are some monsters that prove they cannot be part of society, and therefore must be removed completely from society. If it's a Health issue. We treat the Health issue. If it's not a Health issue, we treat it pragmatically. "It's" a bad cog in the machine, and you get rid of bad cogs.

I think Texas has a very good response for the death penalty so I shall now quote the very intellectual person on this matter in Ron White, "In Texas if three or more people see you commit a heinous crime there is no sitting on death row for 20 years, no instead you go to the front of the line."

I think sums up my ideals very well because I am very sure more than three people saw him do this.

I think they have the right guy. He is the shooter so unless their is a really solid, valid mental health issue then I say he gets the death penalty. Based upon the premeditation and his manifesto I would say he is sane enough to know what he was doing.

I understand some of the victim's families have given forgiveness to him for his crimes. I respect them for their ability to do so, they are far better people that he ever will be.

Keep in mind though, this is the state of SC (for the people of SC) trying him, not the victim's families. He owes a debt to the people of the state of SC and if the feds get involved, the entire U.S. population.

As a person who subscribes to a biblical world view and as someone who believes in and understands the value of forgiveness I also believe punishment should fit the crime and in this case then by all means he deserves the death penalty.
However, it would be far better punishment to stick him in prison for the rest of his natural life and let the inmates have their fun. He's a scrawny little boy who stands no chance with inmates who are hardened men and who have lived much harder lives than this little boy.

Yes. Absolutely. But as SGT Jeremiah B. stated, the families get a vote too. I am all for the death penalty... But, the issue in a America, is the amount of time it takes, the countless appeals, and the tax dollars wasted in death penalty cases. I really like life (x9) with no chance of parole, so this person (assuming he is guilty) will rot in jail for many years. I also believe he needs to be in general population... not protective custody, or some other time of special housing unit...

If this guy does not deserve the death penalty, then I don't know who does.
He dispassionately looked on for an hour as these good people invited him to participate - regardless of his race, I might add - and he just watched them worship. Then he killed them. All in the hopes of starting a "race war".
I have no words to describe how vile an act this was. That the family members has the fortitude to find it in their hearts to forgive him is a testament to their great faith.

As a society though, we have to have the courage to apply the highest and harshest punishment to those who would act on their warped and twisted world views.

Personnally, I would like to see him incarcerated at any local penitentary down there and placed in the general prison population. That should sort things out nicely, and save plenty of taxpayer dollars.

Forgiveness does not alleviate the consequences of ones actions any more than regretting the action.

Now in their forgiveness they may ask the court for mercy, and that will be something the judge may take into account when sentencing.

Personally I think he deserves the maximum punishment allowed by law in South Carolina.

SGT Jeremiah B. nailed it with his response. I am all for getting medieval on someone who deserves it but what society may want should never be trumped by the victim's desires. If they are putting forth a message that hate begets hate and love begets love, then God bless them. There is still hope for the world. This is a fine example of 'talk the talk and walk the walk.' Keep out these agenda pushing hypocritical yahoos who live to be seen as crusaders for justice (after getting paa paa paa paid!!!!!!) and follow the wishes of the victims. due to my faith it is not my life to take since God created me and has given me a second chance at life. by giving him the death penalty you in turn are murdering another soul. lock him away in isolation. the death penalty hasn't stopped anyone. no matter how you look at it death penalty is a mask for those that want him dead to get away with murder. but this is just my opinion.

He is, I believe, being charged with Federal hate crimes. The death penalty is too good for him. Let him rot in a box in a Supermax for LWOP, on the 23/1 solitary plan. No goodies, no internet, no TV, etc... Just him and his sick little brain for 23 hours a day for the next 70 years or so.

Oh and btw, that will cost LESS than a death penalty execution will. Go figure...

I vote yes because he committed these murders with forethought and from what I have see of all photos of him, no signs of remorse or guilt, its almost as if he got a new top score on a video game.
The only down side is that he will be on death row with appeal after appeal for the next 20 plus years.

While there is no doubt in my mind that he did it, I feel he should be convicted in a court of law before we ask this question. As others have pointed out, if the victims families have forgiven him wouldn't putting him to death cheapen their forgiveness?
