My home of residence is in California, currently I’m stationed at Fort Drum, NY. I am getting med boarded currently and was curious as to if the Army pays for my travel costs back home if I drive or fly back (or both options). <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>If you own a vehicle that you need to get back to CA, then definitely drive. You will be paid mileage and per diem. I don&#39;t recall the percentages, but I believe 70% is paid in advance and then you file your final travel voucher after you&#39;ve arrived. You can also be paid for HHG&#39;s by doing a DITY (Do It Yourself) or partial DITY. You weigh your vehicle empty and then loaded at a certified scale and you get paid for the weight by the pound. The trip will pay for itself, pretty much.<br /><br />If you don&#39;t own a vehicle, then just fly back and have the Army ship your stuff. There is no sense in getting a rental or buying a car prior just for that.
