Hey all, question pretty much states the question. My home of residence is in California, currently I’m stationed at Fort Drum, NY. I am getting med boarded currently and was curious as to if the Army pays for my travel costs back home if I drive or fly back (or both options). Also curious as to how long it would take to receive travel cost refunds (unless its prior too).

If you own a vehicle that you need to get back to CA, then definitely drive. You will be paid mileage and per diem. I don't recall the percentages, but I believe 70% is paid in advance and then you file your final travel voucher after you've arrived. You can also be paid for HHG's by doing a DITY (Do It Yourself) or partial DITY. You weigh your vehicle empty and then loaded at a certified scale and you get paid for the weight by the pound. The trip will pay for itself, pretty much.

If you don't own a vehicle, then just fly back and have the Army ship your stuff. There is no sense in getting a rental or buying a car prior just for that.

Awesome appreciate it SFC. Where would I file the DITY or partial DITY?

Transportation office at Clark Hall should be able to set you up. Even with a medical discharge you should go through Transition Assistance and out-processing briefs. Everything should be covered there. Here is what DFAS has on their site: https://www.dfas.mil/militarymembers/travelpay/armypcs/dityppmmoves.html

Everyone should take at least one long train ride in their life. Watch America roll by outside the window.
