The orders end right before FY18, but I was offered an extension until FY19. I also received an offer to go on my first deployment (which is really important to me, because I firmly believe all NCOs should have one) and it'll involve travelling between Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. I will transfer to AD upon REFRAD of either assignment. Should I go on my first deployment, or stay in Italy? 2017-08-03T08:08:27-04:00 SGT Private RallyPoint Member 2795911

I'm a Reservist, and I am currently on a tour here in Italy. The same can be said if you take up the deployment opportunity. If you are looking to get promoted and stay in for a bit the deployment might be the better option.

All NCO’s do not need to be deployed, to be effective leaders. I strongly believe that a Soldier must go if they are called to do so and do everything possible to ensure that you are ready to go if called on to do so. I have deployed twice and learned a great deal about Soldiers, the Army and myself in those two years. Before making a decision take some time and consider each option, and think about how it will affect you and your family. For me, if the offer to reply was solid as in I knew they needed my MOS and it was open then I would take it. Since it is just a chance to deploy there is too much grey area. Stay in Italy and look for an opportunity to deploy after 2019. Another piece of advice, deployments aren't just combat assignments. Before 2001 when people talked about replying it was to the Sinai, Kuwait, Egypt, Bosnia so don't get hung up on you needing a "deployment" the opportunities will come. Italy is a great experience but a deployment can teach you things about yourself that you can't get at home. While its always a risk to deploy to these areas, this is what we train for. It will only make you a better soldier and leader if you go. Just make sure you are mentally prepared for everything that goes with it. Many Soldiers these days do everything they can to get out of deploying so I applaud you for wanting to lace up your boots and go. They're is no MIN or MAX points to achieve 20 good years (50pts min makes a good year)... so I ask you; did you know one year of active duty (365pts) is equal to five years in the selected reserves? So for future planning only, just supposing you end up the common goal of 4,000 points in a USAR/ARNG typical career.. that will give you about 25% of base pay of the pay-grade held upon going on the retired reserve list... so you can use today's pay scales to see that amount in current dollars.
It's good time and territory management to take as many active opportunities and keep those points accumulating for as long as you can hold the mustard.
