No, you are a warfighter first, MOS proficiency is the next priority. Scenario: super high speed mechanic NCO or commo guy, it doesn't matter the MOS, imagine if they were the best at their job but couldn't lead their squad out of a wet paper bag. Now, same MOS's, and let's say they are average to subpar at their job, but are the best Leaders in the platoon. How do you value one more over the other. My job as a senior leader is to indentify what you are weak at and help you develop a plan to get better to become a well rounded NCO. Again to answer your question, NO.

Sir, with this mentality how else to we combat the shrinking retention rates of high valued skill sets? I see soldiers from my MOS leave daily due to a 3-4 times pay increase in the civilian world. I'm certainly not saying that ALL of the soldiers in my MOS are worth that much but what I am saying is there are more leaving after their first term than there are staying. Unfortunately those leaving are the good ones.

SPC (Join to see) - They already do work to retain people with variable reenlistment bonus payments to retain people in needed skills. There are functional pays already in place for some that have added skills beyond their regular duties or in some case to enable those jobs. Rank is a whole other category and doesn't need a change. it has a purpose and advancement process that woks quite well.

Rank (specifically Grade) denotes "Scope of Responsibility" which comes with Pay.

Each Occupational Field has a Task Organizational (T/O) structure which defines HOW each rank fits within it, and how the "Scope of Responsibility" aligns. As an example; a Sergeant in the Intelligence Field has a VERY specific "Scope of Responsibility" as does a Motor T Sergeant.

You can transplant one from the other, and they would be able to perform the same LEVEL of capabilities if not the same specific skills. That said, their pay should be equivalent.

Now, if one or the other has a specialty skill, like say a language which is "outside" their scopes of responsibility, then specialty pay is reasonable. We have that though. Flight Pay, Sea Pay, Imminent Danger Pay. And some of those are rank based, some are longevity based, and some are "need" based (like reenlistment bonuses).

My only issue with this statement is the services (looking at you, Army) with Corporal Specialist meaning two entirely different "scopes of responsibility."

No. A sergeant should receive the same pay as other sergeants in other MOS's. Extra compensation can be earned such as combat pay, flight pay, etc.
