However, Planned Parenthood does, and has received reimbursement for the costs incurred through donating fetal tissue for medical research, which is legal... (fixate on the word donations) I submit to you that the government is and was fully aware of this practice for quite some time, known or unknown to the American public. It always died in the senate until it was caught on video and leak it to the public, and because of public outrage, some of the very same senators are now playing dumb, expressing disbelief and are fastracking legislation to redirect this "funding" to other "women health organizations" (weren't specific)... (noticed that fast that happened? Planned Parenthood is still considered a "women health organization...) This legislation should get final vote before the August recess... Give it a year or so, maybe less to blow over, and the practice will most likely resume, with government funding, and stricter government oversight to prevent this from happening again, after all "someone" needs their stipend restarted... This is not new, and has come up off and on since the 90's, but just like so many things, it's a huge deal now, only because there is a video to go with it... otherwise, this "legal" process would have continued and none would be the wiser... The agency does a lot more than just abortions. In some places, they are the only game in town for overall women's health care. And even if you hate abortion, bear in mind it will happen anyway if it is banned; it will just happen in back-alleys with wire hangers. That's not a statement of morality, it is just acknowledging the facts that there has been, and always will be, a market for seeking to end unplanned pregnancies. Best to keep these things safe and open so they can be monitored. I will say up front that I am pro-life and find abortion repulsive on all levels (though medically necessary in rare circumstances).

When I was in India, I had the chance to check out some sweat shops and was horrified by what I saw. The pastor I was working with responded to my angry desire to report them and get them closed with "If you shut them down, the people will starve. Is that what you would choose?" I realized then that the real world isn't as simple as "This is evil. Make it go away!" Principles over people results in an enormous amount of suffering beyond what is already present.

Abortion is really a tiny fraction of what PP does and actually play a key role in REDUCING abortions (while simultaneously being the largest provider in the country...ironic, I know). They are, in many areas, the only access to women's health services. Shut them down and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of at-risk women would lose the only lifeline they have. It's not good enough to shut down the sweat shop. There needs to be a real, viable alternative in place first.
