Should RallyPoint add an awards section to the profile for both military & civilian members?

Should RallyPoint Web designer consider adding a Section in the Profile for Military Awards for both military personnel and civilian personnel?

Do you think RP members will be honest for the most part and only add those they actually received?
(or)
Do you think some RP members will add awards they didn't actually receive?
(or)
Do you think there is no need for another "love me" section on the profile?

I was thinking about this the other day. I would not worry about honesty since RallyPoint already asks about military schools and experience. If service members are not honest with these, they won't be honest with awards. Since we have everything else on our profiles, why not add awards?

One thing I would like to see added is a ribbon rack to display your awards on your profile as well as a way to display your special skill badges. Currently the only thing you can display is your rank, unit patches, and deployments.

The awards are easily enough vetted against a DD-214 or other records accessible by a Personnel clerk. Yes, some will lie, and stolen Valor will tear them apart, most will not.

Yes. Add the option to the profile.
However, also ensure the various federal and state civilian service and public service awards are available, nit just federal and state military awards.
It is an option which should be available. The choice to post should also be up to the individual

Besides, no one would believe me when I told them that I had been awarded the Medal of Honor (with two devices), the Victoria Cross (and Bar), the Order of Alexander Nevsky, The Cross of Honour for Valour, the Grand Croix of The Legion of Honour, and the Hilal-e-Kashmir - so why bother?

I want to know what people are thinking, so I pay attention to what people say and not who they say they are.

PS - I believe that the vast majority of RP members who bothered to post their awards/decorations would be honest.

I certainly believe that the vast majority of RallyPoint members are honest. I concur with @Capt Seid Waddell that since RallyPoint has access to verify that we have received one or more DD-214s [I have 3 DD-214-1978, 1992, and 2004].

Well, if you voted for this regime, you probably don't place a lot of importance on being honest. And about 1/2 the population is willfully ignorant and could care less about the character and background of the politicians they elect. That said, if the military represents a cross section of our society and can't tell the difference between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies... it's a virtual guarantee that some will intentionally exaggerate their awards/decorations.

But I don't plan on losing any sleep over it. If people want to compare, the Marines will be at a disadvantage because they are the stingiest with awards. But knowing that and seeing some Air Force Admin type with a chest full of medals and Purple Hearts for paper cuts... Knock yourselves out.

I will post my actual awards. I see no reason to lie about it. Those who do have to look at themselves in the mirror at night and like what they see. I couldn't get myself to do that if I lied about my background.

Shameless plug: If only our politicians had the same kind of integrity we expect of our service members, Washington might be in better shape.

For that reason, I don't think it's feasible, unless the decision was made to take everyone at their word. The result of that is another discussion. Otherwise, I personally have no problem with it.

Somewhere over in the military discussions section there's a topic that invites RP members to post their racks. Haven't seen any of the obvious posers, valor thieves or inflators that people seem to be worried about. There's no requirement to post documentation for the racks. I've only seen two posts challenged, one for a CAB(2d Awd) that went unanswered and another regarding the number of campaign stars on a service ribbon that was answered. There are a number of responses of the "What's that green and yellow one right there by the NDSM?" variety that are also explained. It's all been pretty civil so far. So anecdotal experience shows such postings would be self policing.

To my mind assuming that posted information will be embellished and therefore must be verified in detail before posting is akin to those folks who believe we build highways to catch speeders.

I say go for it. People work hard and sometimes do amazing things to earn their awards, then in most cases, they are only recognized for them a few times a year when they wear their dress uniform. It's a good opportunity for deserving Soldiers to be further recognized.

As far stolen valor or embellished valor is concerned. Dishonest people will find a way to be dishonest, if they will embellish their ribbon rack, they have probably already embellished other parts of their profile. The more forward they are with their dishonestly, the more likely they are to get caught.

I think that it would be cool. I remember looking at my dad's ribbons in his shadow box when I was growing up, and I've always checked out people's collections since I've been in. It's not a measurement device to me, I just think it's a great and interesting way to start a conversation. Be proud of what you've earned, that's just my 2 cents.

That's an interesting thought. Out ribbons and awards are part of the story of our experiences. Every ribbon tells a story. For instance, my first ARCOM was an impact award from COL David Petraeus when I was deployed to Sinai Egypt with 3-504th PIR.

I understand how this could just be another part of the profile. I would say leave the option there for people to choose if they want to showcase their ribbons or not. But don't make it a requirement to bring your profile to 100% completion if you don't enter ribbons/awards.

No because I only have two medals (National Defense and Good Conduct )and a Sharpeshooters Badge which is not much to be proud of after 8 years of service So my point is those of us who were not in combat may feel less important than others here who were I recall wearing those two and standing next to other Marines with their rows of ribbons. And I knew I was not in the same league as those who were in heavy duty combat ..it got to the point where I didn't wear my medals or ribbons .

Bur am showing them now to make my case to not display our ribbon racks...

Maybe. Maybe not. But let's get past the "no one cares about ribbons and medals" nonsense. Just come to terms with your actual feelings on the matter. NO ONE hates being recognized for a job well done or a hardship tour. If the Army cracked down like the Marine Corp then maybe so many Soldiers wouldn't be so quick to act like they really do not care.

On another note, 150 years from now when there's no one else on earth that ever personally knew you, what do you think the average person or answer or might look up about you... Maybe military service and decorations? It's a way to make a mark and we all outwardly or secretly get satisfaction from seeing our ribbon rack and the stories and work that went into it.

I noted that some members have placed behind their names MSM, DSL, others use their military photo and we can see their awards in the photo. The question is, is it necessary to have a ribbon/medals earned display? I develop my opinion of someone through watching their actions and listening to their words not because of the rank on their collar or the candy on their chest.

I like the idea for the Military Civil Service awards. I retired from the military and did a lot more promotions in GS service. Lots of people may be surprised that civil service also get awards.

I'm in the no and no category. There is so much wrangling, especially among Army types, about awards and "patchmania". But that means I'm more old school. Never had an I Love Me wall until I built out my man cave last year. The stuff has been in storage forever. It's a private thing that only visitors see if we're going to crank out ammo on the presses. I'm also in the negative category on EOT awards. Again, the value of many of our decorations have been devalued greatly over time. Again old school. That said, this stuff is more important to others so I really don't care if RP has a checkbox for them. It will be another piece that I pretty much ignore.

Rally point affords me the opportunity to speak to a larger group of veterans and I am currently able to in person. I don't need to know their credentials in order to decide whether or not I respect their decision or opinion. I think it would encourage what we used to call PX Rangers.

Just because I feel I'm entitled to a MSM doesn't mean I should show it. I believe Service Members would be honest about it. It would be rediculous for anyone that actually served to risk their integrity for a badge, metal or ribbon they didn't earn. Plus the digrace of being called out by another member who served with them and knows they're a fraud! Who does that?

The idea of RallyPoibt is to get to know one another and have open discussions. Posting of ones awards really serves no valuable purpose. We really want to know what experience an individual has, and what insights we can share either up or down the experience tree.

While I'm not opposed to the idea, I don't see the need for a feature such as this. I'm retired so all my ribbons and/or medals and $2 will get me a cup of coffee anywhere in town.

I think this would be a good idea COL Mikel J. Burroughs. As most have said your DD-214 has all this info on it and can be verified. For those that don't have a dd-214 yet it can be verified by printing out a awards and decorations RIP. In the Air Force we always had to have a copy of our current ribbon rack to match with our uniform for Professional Military Education (PME). Even if you were authorized a ribbon/medal you had to have the proof for it to be on your uniform. They could definitely do it that way for verification purposes since not all will be truthful, unfortunately.

We all know what we have accomplished...or not. If you have the need to "advertise" your accomplishments build a shadow box or like we do in groups like the VFW and wear your ribbons, etc. at certain occasions like Memorial Day or Veterans Day or at the funeral for a fallen brother or sister in arms.

I'm sure someone has this slide it had ribbon like my daddy is a general Ribbon or it had a ribbon of people with a martini glass for how many DUI's you had this slide a scoop of ribbons and came out in the 90s please somebody posted I don't have it anymore it's pretty funny. Another award I remember in this parody was I never got an award ribbon. Please I'm sure some of you in the California Army National Guard remember this from the nineties but I'm sure it was all over the Internet and in Powerpoint.

It would be nice to have a little awards board on RP Member's page, where it shows the ribbons like they would be displayed on a uniform. Though, mine would be pretty sad. I'm sure some members would abuse it, but at the same time, there is nothing really stopping them from abusing similar things now or claiming awards they haven't earned. We just trust that MOST of us are honest and have the INTEGRITY you'd expect out of a service member, past or present.

Perhaps for certain awards, like those above the Commendation Medal, there should be some form of proof or verification needed. If you're a MoH, Service Cross, Distinguished Service, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart etc. you should be required to have those awards verified before they appear PUBLICLY on your account. Just an idea. Perhaps that could be an admin function - verifying accounts.

It's not like your going to ask for verification of our DD FORM 214 but come on people, We have to be professional on here and if they do let this awards site or link open up on RP we have to be honest with each other. You know I had my shadow box here in my cubicle here at work for about 5 years and not a day went by someone from the NAVY officer side of the house always had a question about my awards because I am pretty decorated more then them. SO I am always explaining to them and they get this look on their face like I'm lying, until I pull my DD FORM 214 off the back of my shadow box. A lot of people don't understand the Audie Murphy Medallion. I got sick of explaining everything so I took it home. Strange the last day I had it here, our 2 star came to visit me and told me " He heard that I had a very interesting Shadow Box" He saw it and I took it home and now people ask where it is. Just another heartache off my back at work.

Like I said this could make our profile gain more % because I can't get any higher on my profile and I'm not on here to recruit they will Endorse me if they want and read my blogs if they want.

COL., for the most part, I feel most Veterans would be Honest in Posting any of their Awards and Accomplishments. However, even though I'm extremely Proud of what I've earned and accomplished during my Service Years, I was properly Recognized at the time of each presentation and that good enough for me without having to share them! I have them Proudly Displayed in My Shadow Coffee Table at Home for anyone interested in them to see, especially my Grandchildren. We should Always recognize certain Medal Winners such as the Medal of Honor Winners who rate certain Tributes and Honors already!!! Just my Opinion Sir!

I think that there is enough detail in the profile already that not having the rack is actually a detracting factor. I know when I was filling my profile in and entering duty station information and training and certifications that I was surprised by, and missed, the exclusion of awards or honours.

We are who we are and we lose sight of different views when we judge those of lower rank or awards right off the bat. Experience is one thing but we all know awards are not always going to the right people and the longer your in the more PCS and deployment (your rank equals this award) situations. Again I do think experience is another thing and something that just highlights your positions, deployments and previous locations would be good.

This day and age the integrity of some people is on shaky ground. That said. I agree with Capt Seid Waddell. To embellish awards on a military based web site would blow ones credibility out of the water in front off all the membership. No rock big enough to hide under after that. I voted with the 37% bunch.

As long as it is not mandatory and will enhance the site. I believe that enhancement is an unknown factor; that being personal to each Vet. I personally would not display. I find that to be embarrassing. I have no shadow box, do not know all that I earned, am not up on AR 670-1, ect. One other point, I would not recognize awards from another branch of service, and that is a disservice to them. I use the posted material to get to know other members. I know I have rambled so I'll quit now!

Although I voted yes on this question there is one point to make on military awards or
service ribbon racks. I have seen all the service ribbons that are awarded to active duty
military today and the younger veterans. While taking nothing away from this group as
I know they have earned every service ribbon they were awarded there is a divide here.
The older veterans on RP who served in the 1960's and 70's had no access to many of
the service ribbon awards because they did not exist during that time of service. Two
examples of this are the Army Service Ribbon and the Army Overseas Service Ribbon
which did not exist until August of 1981. Army service veterans could be awarded
these two service ribbons retroactively only if they were still on active duty status in
August of 1981. This shuts out thousands of honorable service veterans who earned
these two ribbons. There are more service ribbons awarded by the military today than
in the past which is not a problem as long as this "service ribbon rack" question does
not divide the different generations of veterans on RallyPoint.

This was my response to a discussion on the same topic.

Somewhere in the awards discussions section there's a discussion started by SGT Bryon Sergent that invites RP members to post their racks. Haven't seen any of the obvious posers, valor thieves or inflators that people seem to be worried about. There's no requirement to post documentation for the racks. I've only seen two posts challenged, one for a CAB(2d Awd) that went unanswered and another regarding the number of campaign stars on a service ribbon that was answered. There are a number of responses of the "What's that green and yellow one right there by the NDSM?" variety that are usually explained. It's all been pretty civil so far. So anecdotal experience shows such a feature would be self policing.

To my mind assuming that award information will be embellished or falsified and therefore must be verified in detail by "someone" before posting is akin to those folks who believe we build highways to catch speeders.

While some people may be inclined to think there should be an awards section for RP, I would beg to differ. I'll use the words my father shared with me: "In the military, awards and medals mean something to some; however, when you're retired or discharged all the Silver Stars, Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts you may have still won't buy you a cup of coffee". A medal doesn't make a person nor does it define a person unless that person needs it to feel whole.

To me being able to learn the history behind the awards, campaigns, the awards given by the different services and stories that led to them, would be fascinating. But that comes from the perspective of a civilian who was a History major and believes in the documentation of the role of military veterans as part of our accurate historic record.

I can see where members would be concerned about people that may enhance their awards, and I'd hope most would be wise enough to not do that here, but..there are ones who would view this site as the ultimate challenge. I would hate to think there would be members who were constantly checking to see if others who posted awards were being truthful just to "out" them on this site. It would make things uncomfortable where now generally everything is quite friendly. So overall, as a few others have said, leaving the section for MOH seems to be right, unless the subject comes up in other discussions.

Ive already noticed that when I post something someone may disagree with they immediately check out my profile. Some folks have tried to compare ERBs or career bullet points or stack deployments against deployments. In a perfect world with no liars and no one uppers It would be awesome to be able to build a virtual rack, and even in this world it may be a cool feature, but I see some folks embellishing and others trying to use theirs to bully others.

I dont think it's necessary. Awards are something to be proud of but there's also no need to flaunt them IMO. I'm probably a bit different on this but I was always suspect of anyone who wore their awards on anything but their Class A uniform.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me if RP adds the section.
I believe most members will be honest, but as many have seen on here, you do have the occasional poseur who was in and out with nothing to show for it or never even in the military. Faking awards is part of their identity.
I do agree with the posters that for those in the Reserves, awards are not always captured by your DD-214. I have orders for an MSM, 2 ARCOMS, 3 AAMs, and a number of lesser service and unit awards that are not on my last DD-214 or are pictured on any of my photos such as my profile picture. DD-214s are only generated for active duty time.
