No way should the 5 pillars of Islam be mandated in Middle School as a religious experience. They should be taught with the tenets of Christianity, Judaism and the other major regigions in World history. No way should children be instructed to say or write "Allah is the only God" or that Mohamed is is his prohet.

What the Hell is wrong with people ??? 1st we are told we cant have open prayer before we go out side the wire, then Chaplains are tossed out of the Military, Pledge of Allegiance is done away with, but its ok for muslims to wear headdresses, still do prayer in the military and can enter this country and military even though they are illegal??? Where does this bullshit end???

Ideally religion shouldn't be taught in schools at all; but if it must then they should all be taught as part of overall world cultures, since religions have had a hand in shaping societies through history.

A week before my daughter entered middle school, there was a Parent's day so parents could look around, meet the teachers, visit class rooms and get a general idea of what classes would be taught. As we were walking down a hallway, I noticed one room had a sign that said evolution. The teacher was standing by the door. I made the remark to my daughter that she would not be attending that class. The teacher spoke up and said yes she will. Evolution is a mandatory class. I replied we'll see about that. I went to the main office and informed the Principle that my daughter would not be attending the evolution class. He said I'm sorry Sir, but it is mandatory. I explained our belief in God and his creation and informed him not only would I be calling the Walker County school board, I would also be contacting my Attorney to file a law suit against the middle school for trying to force a class on my daughter that went against our religious beliefs. Took him about ten minutes to produce a paper for me to sign stating that due to our religious beliefs, my daughter would voluntarily not be attending said class. People get pushed around mostly because they will not stand up to something that is obviously wrong in their book.

I think it's good to learn about all religions from a historical stand point. Who made it up, basic beliefs, significant events, things that had a impact on history. Christianity should have Jesus, His beliefs, the start of the Popes, Rome, Martin Luther, Crusades, inquisition. Not try to convert anyone just teach the basics. Islam should be the same way, Mohammad, beliefs, the crusades again, differences between Sunnis and the rest. If you have to write down the five pillars Maybe write down the 10 commandments. Religion has had huge impact on all of our history.

I live in the middle of this local firestorm. I do not think the teaching of religion of any kind needs to take place in our schools. There is insufficient time to teach the students the old 3Rs that served us so well for years and we use the time for a topic that is relevant in another venue. One of my grandsons is in the middle of this subject at this time. My issue, other than what I noted, is that there is an inordinate amount of time devoted to Islam as compared to the other religions.

It's a school. The kids are there to get an academic education. Religious education should be provided by a religious institution of the parents' choosing. There's no room in academics for religion, especially in a horribly decentralized school system that's not even one of the top school systems in the world. I think this is - again - misrepresented. I think the educators were teaching "Islam" and part of "Islam" is that there is 1 God, Allah and "Muhammad" is his prophet. I don't see the problem with testing the students with a question that might ask - "What is the 1st pillar of Islam?" - wherein the students could potentially answer with "ALLAH IS THE ONLY GOD"

Now - with that said, if "Islam" is "mandated" to be taught, that's OK by me also - but it should be taught in a "religion" curriculum that would include ALL the religions of the same scope - which to me would be Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and maybe 1 or two others? I have a huge problem with them (the educators) taking the teaching of ANYTHING out of scope or "ignoring" Christianity.

To understand the wars across Europe, you need to understand Martin Luther and the other Protestants. To understand the Crusades, you need to understand the differences between Islam and Christianity, that ancient Christian leaders were dicks, and how much of it was politics in the guise of good religion. It's the same way you can't really understand Sengoku Jidai without learning about Buddhism and Ikko-ikki sect.

In reading the article, I see a policy that has been poorly implemented and crossed with parents who would rather their kids grow up ignorant and bigoted than actually worldly and educated.

Or would teaching how folks were forced to convert to Christianity or killed would be more appropriate to that commentator? History is a nasty subject, yet the more you know about it, the more informed you are in it. You can't pick and choose what's "cool" to learn about in regards to history. Now writing "Allah is whatever" is pushing it even for me and I consider myself to be a rather open minded person. Good choices with the survey questions BTW. I'm SURE Fox will be all over this with Todd Starnes leading the charge.

I am a firm believer SSgt Private RallyPoint Member that spirituality of any kind is a very personal journey. The tenets that one believes are between that individual and the god, gods, goddesses, golden twinkie, or whatever else they choose to see, or choose not to see as the divine. I do not think this is something that can be taught. Not only in school, but in the home either. Spirituality even among people of the same religion is going to be different between individuals, even within the same household. As a school they have an obligation to stay out of religion altogether. As parents we have an obligation to provide guidance to raise our children to be morally strong people. We gain strength through diversity. The caveat is that it has to be in a respectful environment. If a Christian wants their faith respected by a Muslim, then that Christian needs to show the same respect to Islam. That doesn't mean that they have to agree with it. It means that they need to respect that different people have different ways of looking at the divine. Again, this has nothing to do with public school. It is my opinion that the school should teach the students that the five pillars of Islam exist. If the student (regardless of faith) wants to find out more information, then they can find that out on their own. The same is true of any faith. When I was in High School, we studied the bible as literature. We read several books of the bible, but only for their literary value. Their was no religious discussion at all. It was all about characters, plot, events, etc... I found it to be very interesting. It was more interesting when that was contrasted with reading Greek and Norse god stories in the same vein. A lot can be learned about a culture by reading their religious tenets. If it is done from an objective stand point. Right now in this nation, I think we have far too much religious tension to be objective, and therefore we should leave these items out of the curriculum until things cool off in society as a whole.

Holy shit guys this is common stuff. If we want kids to know why they rape children fuck goats and like to deny people human rights then u have to teach the tennents of islam to see why there so fucked up. And i really doubt the teacher made the children wrote allah is the true god as an affirmation of their own belifs but rather as the answer to a question. For example if i were to ask you what do mislims belive? You might answer that allah is the true god but i didnt make u swear that to be u belif i only asked what mulism belive. Also allah is just the arabic word for god and if you study religion chirstanity judaism and islam all belive in the same god the major differnces occur after the new testament. Moreover limiting what children are allowed to learn is fucking psycho teach them everything and let them decide. I learned about islam in the 6 th grade again in highschool and again in college and i am an nco infantryman in the us army who votes red knowledge doesnt hurt you it helps you

I am surprised that the Atheist organizations have taken up arms against this educational "unit of instruction" or "assignment module". Especially since they are the ones that have been the driving force of removing Christianity related items from the school curriculums and practices. All other religious related items in those same veins should either be removed or reinstituted for a fully balanced approach. In the case of Islamic / Muslim related items in contention here, if they were treated in the same manner as prayer in school, there should be no problem with removing this part from the curriculum, primarily since it is the Islamic equivalent to Christian prayer. If they teach this, they should then go back to allowing prayer in school and even better add the Pledge of Allegiance back to regular school practices.

In the article, there seems to be a wide disparity in what each side is saying. I'm betting the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Of course, teaching religion in a public school can be a tricky proposition at best; can it be taught in such a way that is not viewed as proselytizing?

I certainly do not envy public school teachers.

Separation of Church and State, unless it applies to the Islam religion. Three weeks used in our school, 7th grade studying Islam. Far more than any other. Lots of protests, but the indoctrination continues.
