We are our own Branch. We just have the same Secretary and Department because we have the same overarching mission.

Ships need Marines AND Marines need Ships.

It's a symbiotic relationship due to our Amphibious, Expeditionary, and Littoral nature.

The Air Corps (later Air Force) did not have the same symbiotic (level of) relationship with the US Army, which is why separation worked.

A great quote by a Navy officer during the Civil War I believe: "A ship without Marines is like a coat without buttons."

I liked being on ships. You had the Navy guys right there handy where you could make fun of them.

PO1 Shawn Blalock - So is the US Navy. Both are their own distinct branch of the military neither subordinate to the other. This is why the Marine Corps has had a place on the Joint Chiefs of Staff for decades.

PO1 Shawn Blalock - Yes, the Department of the Navy contains the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. We are ALL Naval Personnel. Marine Corps officers are NAVAL officers. I respect the USMC as much as I do the USN, having served with BOTH as an enlisted man and as an officer. The problem with too many nay sayers is that they HAVE NOT served with both.

I agree about the USMC, however the AF should be back under the Army. The AF wastes more money then any other branch. The AF promotes people to 0-6 with a 0-6 XO to command 200 personal units that a 0-3 in any other branch could easily manage. The AF will also have a pile of E-9s, E-8s and E-7s to manage units much smaller then a battalion. They have almost as many E-5s as they do E-4s. The AF is incapable and under trained to protect their own overseas bases and rely upon the USMC and Army to keep them safe. The AF is the only branch that can not function with out the other branches.

The Marine Corps is a separate branch that happens to be a component of the Department of the Navy. The relationship works, so there is no need to make any changes.

The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection,[7] using the mobility of the United States Navy to, by Congressional mandate, rapidly-deliver combined-arms task forces on land, at sea and in the air. The U.S. Marine Corps is one of the four armed service branches in the U.S. Department of Defense and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S. armed forces, is a Marine Corps general.

The Marine Corps has been a component of the U.S. Department of the Navy since 1834,[8][9] working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics.[10] The USMC operates posts on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world, and several of the Marines' tactical aviation squadrons, primarily Marine Fighter Attack squadrons, are also embedded in Navy carrier air wings and operate from the Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.[11]

Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as a service branch of infantry troops capable of fighting for independence both at sea and on shore.[12] The role of the Corps has since grown and evolved, expanding to aerial warfare and earning popular titles such as, "America's third air force", and, "second land army".[13] The United States Marine Corps has distinguished itself as it has served in the majority of American wars and armed conflicts, from its inception to the modern era, and attained prominence in the 20th century when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare proved prescient and ultimately formed the cornerstone of the Pacific theater of World War II.[14]

By the mid-20th century, the U.S. Marine Corps had become a major theorist and the dominant practitioner of amphibious warfare.[15][16][17] Its ability to rapidly respond on short notice to expeditionary crises gives it a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy.[18] As of 2016, the USMC has around 182,000 active duty members and some 38,900 reserve Marines.[2] It is the smallest of the U.S. armed forces within the U.S. DoD.[19][20][21]

My Dad was a Marine. Boy was he pissed when I joined the Army! Anyway the Marines need the Navy otherwise they would never find the battlefield. Seriously why would anyone to to make the two separate services. If it's not broke don't try to fix it!!! You'll make my dad role over in his grave. He was a merchant marine before joining the corp when WWII broke out. This is the only tattoo he had in his life time.

SSG Warren Swan - Yes the Navy takes care of all of our medical needs and they transport us around the globe to accomplish our missions. In my day we also attended some excellent Navy Schools at the Great Lakes Training Center and the Charleston Naval Training Center and of course some of our new LTs graduate from the Naval Academy. We also helped ANGLICO companies with their operations calling in Naval gun fire ..now that is scary ..and we have Marine ships companies assigned to Navy Ships which is excellent duty. I was assigned to the USS Constitution at the Boston Navy Yard & that was the best post at that Navy Station.
