If the White House belongs to the people of America, can the President arbitrarily decide to keep it closed to the public and open it only to those he invites? Is this really a matter of Economics and National Security?

The White House is open for tours. It was closed for a mixture of reasons, I don't care to get into that. You do have to schedule a tour in advance through your congressional representative's office, or if you know someone who works there they can usually give you the hook-up with a like a 2 week heads up. But I'll tell you this, I'd rather tour Bill Gates' or Elon Musk's house, those two places are probably pretty sweet.

Going back through my emails, the earliest I have of tours returning was March, but I know they were back even before then.

PO1 (Join to see), from what I read, tours were cancelled from Mar 2013 to Nov 2013 (a total of 7 months).

I simply never caught wind that they had resumed. The news about the reopening must have been a blurb that quickly was superceded by other news, such as about the Zimmerman trial that was going on about that same time. I got so sick of seeing all that mess, I wasn't paying as much attention to the news as I usually do.

If memory serves correct, after the Sequester was over, the White House tours didn't immediately resume and that part is what was stuck in my head. Sorry about the confusion. I was the one confused and I appreciate your enlightening response. Agreed, it would probably be a more interesting tour to see Bill Gates' or Elon Musk's smart homes.

Didn't know the reason the White House tours were shut down were actually Political. From what I have heard the sequestration cut the budget for the Treasury Department which has the Secret Service within it's budgetary worries. Secret Service probably picked the easiest quick fix to ensure there was no lapse in coverage for it's assigned principals.

Have you ever noticed that Obama never travels anywhere with his dog? It always comes on a separate plane. Not traveling with unclean animals is something you only see Muslims do. They consider dogs unclean.

(Apparently camels are clean enough that they can uh, well...
When Obama starts traveling with a camel, we'll know for sure.)

If the pResident were Christian, as he alleges, traveling with his dog wouldn't present a problem AND it would save taxpayers a lot of money, but there's a catch... That's assuming he cares!

The press made a big deal about the White House tours being cancelled and I watch all the news channels, and usually hit multiple channels every day -- including MSNBC, which gets all its propaganda straight from the White House ; )~. I just never remembered seeing them announce tours had resumed. Guess they knuckled under to pressure and rising resentment from a public that was fed up with the shenanigans of our imperial acting pResident.

The suspension of tours lasted 7 months... but that didn't preclude the pResident from opening up the White House for this party in April 2013, just one month into the Sequester when the White House was still closed to tours...

Capt Jeff S., I remember when they closed it back awhile... but it's still closed? Really has not been on the news since it was first announced. I wish it was open because I wanted to show my wife the inside while stationed at Fort Bragg.
