I had an interesting "city" encounter today. I hop on a bus and over a few stops it fills up. A young man boards the bus and immediately leans against the door. With the motion sensor active for twenty minutes the alarm goes off saying "Please step away from the door" The other passengers yell at the young man. I intercede and ask the young man to step away from the door. No response. In that moment, I felt disrespected but I also felt that this was a moment that I can learn from if he refused to. I calmly walked back to my seat, put in my earbuds and left it at that. One of the many things I am grateful for with my military experience is the ability to fight for what's right and when to allow someone to make a complete fool of themselves. In this volatile world, you cannot control everyone but you do have responsibility to be in control of yourself. When I exited the bus, that young man held the door for me. Perhaps, the young are not as immature as we think.

Yes, sir Capt Dwayne Conyers but I cannot help but believe that we are doing a disservice to young people by not teaching them the foundation of our fundamental way of life and the way our country operates. As a student, I see alot of rude, apathetic students who grow into rude, apathetic adults. Don't we have a moral compass that says that if we were required to learn these things and were tested on them perhaps we would see a better, more engaged participants in our communities and democracy?
