Should you Treat Your Job Search Like A Deployment?

As the U.S. Military prepares to make more cuts, the number of transitioning veterans searching for employment is only going to grow. I’ve had the honor of partnering with some of these men and women during their transition, and for many it’s not easy. The civilian job market is constantly evolving and can be difficult to navigate for even the most seasoned HR professional, let alone a new comer. I want to share some insight with these brave men and women that might make the transition and the job search a little easier.

I think it would be smart to treat job searching as you would a deployment. Make sure you have everything you need and to be as prepared as possible. It certainly cannot hurt!

My advice is to work with a recruiter or recruiting agency. They can help you create a resume that will get you interviews and will also have the contacts to get you in front of those who are interviewing. Also don't look for that dream job when you first get out. Look for that job that will allow you to make money and pay the bills. Once you are working, then look for that dream job. Again, working with recruiters is a great way to get matched with jobs that you are good fit for. Bottom line, you do not have to do it alone. Even the VA has people that can help you find a job.
Also don't treat it like getting ready for a deployment. It is not even close to being the same. It is more like when you first joined and you talked to a recruiter to see if the service was right for you, and to find out what MOS you could do.
