We would need to know why you're moving into the barracks

They said since my wife and son is at a different duty station I'm not entitled to BAH so I would have to move in the barracks

Ty, coming for a visit, in the military eyes, is not a good enough reason; however, you have or had quarters which tells me you have something going for you. The SFC below had some good advice. I would said you have a couple of strikes against you: [1] Rank [2] Custody; but you haven't struck out. Look at the financial hardship this will put on your family. Also, can would and the wife split the difference in living locations [is she assigned where you and her can live together and commute to work?]. Good Luck.

You can’t receive bah and live on post. You can move off-post and complete a CNA. Takes a long time if you don’t ask about it constantly. But once you get it you have to repeat the process yearly until your stationed with your spouse. Also, if it’s not approved right away You’ll be paying out of pocket for your off post housing until your CNA is approved.

Dual military and not receiving BAH then you can keep the off post residence, but you’re responsible for maintaining a barracks room since you’re a geo bachelor, not receiving BAH, and under the tank of SSG. You’ll be losing money since you’re paying for everything, unless you find a way around it.

I’m not legal or JAG, but talk to your unit and express your concern about the situation. Since your spouse isn’t there, they’re responsible for providing you living quarters (i.e. barracks). If you elect to procure the housing off post that’s up to you. Again have command involvement with your situation.
