Hello I am a SSG in the Army i have 13 years of spotless serves under my belt. I have just received my first Field Grade Art -15. I know the QMP board is going to be notified of that sooner or latter. My question is with all my medical issues I have should I start a MEB now or wait to see if the Army is going to retain me or not?

MEB's aren't something you just jump into on a whim or can flip on/off like a light switch. It can be a lengthy process just to get the ball rolling and get to the point where MEB is decided. If you have medical issues I would go ahead and get them documented now and get things on paper regardless of what the ART15 generates.

Yes, if this comes to separation due to RCP, QMP, or MEB, you'll need to file a VA claim and medical documented evidence is the strongest tie to Service connection

LTC Jason Mackay - The one good thing about MEB's is that they make submitting your package to the VA easy as possible. When I was medically retired I had everything wrapped with a bow because all of my evaluations were already done because of the MEB. . As soon as I was off AD I dropped my packet off and started getting compensation the next month.

Absolutely, if it isn't documented, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

For the MEB, do you have a profile with a 3 in any of the categories? A 3 or 4 will auto call for an MEB. If you don't, then speak with your PCP if an MEB is even warranted based on what ever medical issues you have. If your PCP does not feel they warrant an MEB, then that route is probably moot. As for the FG Art 15, if rank is gonna be lost with that FG, then I would suspect you will face separation. As for QMP, I would suspect retaining you would be subject as to what the FG was for. I know my answer if vague, but that's the best I can think of without knowing the specifics. Not that I'm needing to know. But, honestly, it's not looking good for the Home Team, if you catch my meaning.

Loss of rank and RCP will get you before QMP. Your Commander has to initiate the MEB. Talk to your provider

SFC Stephen Hurst - possibly, but RCP for E4 is 8yrs. If it is FG, they can take two. Even then, the soldier would have to re-board as an E5 and play the points game for their MOS to make back E6.

Wait until you find out. Depending on the nature of the Article 15, you may be retained. An Article 15 isn't automatic separation only automatic referral to the board. The board will take into consideration your prior performance, recommendations of your Commanders, and your comments to them. If you've had a good record up until now and the Article 15 isn't for something that implies poor moral character, you'll probably be retained. If it's for DUI, valid SHARP or EO, or cheating and stealing, you'll be separated.

It's better to await the response from the QMP board. You're a SSG so you won't even be evaluated till the next SSG evaluation board, that's plenty of time to put together some letters of recommendation. That's over a year away for now. Even if you are recommended for separation, you can still initiate an MEB after.
