While this only takes up to 180 days off the contract, it is fairly easy to do. All you need is a 4187 requesting a new ETS date, plus a letter of acceptance from either your future employer or school, and a DA31 for any transitional leave you may be taking. I'm not sure if that would work in tandem with a QMP/QSP though. It is branch and rank immaterial. Soldiers can request UP TO 180 days early separation. It may be worth looking into if someone were notified of QMP/QSP as to whether it would be an option or not. S-1 may be able to answer that question. If you try to solve this problem with voluntary separation, all the dead weight that's just sucking up a paycheck by doing the bare minimum would not get out. The people who would voluntary separate are the people who generally have a plan, have aspirations of greater things and have the drive and motivation to set and reach for their own goals. THOSE are valuable people, and the military does not want to lose them.
