From what I understand grunts earn this cord for completing infantry training but depending on what type of unit they are with, they may or may not be authorized to wear it. In the Corps, if you earn something, jump wings for instance, you get to keep wearing them even if you go to a non jumping unit. If a Soldier with an Infantry primary MOS is assigned to a position that does not carry an Infantry MOS the disks and cord are not worn.
