First, talk to his Platoon Trainer, who should know if there is anyone within the platoon that is a genius and can tutor him. Second, talk to the actual school instructor. There are often formal or informal study groups to help you through difficult sections. If not, start one. As an example, at my Engineer Advance Course, there was an informal study group for Military Bridging for those of us that hadn&#39;t done Trig since we were 19 and didn&#39;t get good grades on it then. <br />The Army isn&#39;t in the job of failing people and there are ways to get help, but it helps to ask. There are no repercussions about asking for additional help. Otherwise encourage him to speak with the training CPl. or SGt. They are hold over trainees who are awaiting assignments and have already graduated. If none are available he needs to request a private open door with the Drill or Tac NCO, depending on Basic or AIT. Simply have him be honest and request a battle buddy to help him after hours. I assure you this is the best course of action. Mom or Dad reaching out shows a little more weakness then is required. He will get the help he needs if he seeks it. Thank you for your service. I am a former Red-leg. What MOS did he get assigned and how far into the training cycle is he? Should have asked this first. And thank you for your service.
