SOTU Ripping up POTUS Speech - Is this worthy of censure?

Post Update (20 Feb 2020): I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments!

FREE SPEECH is NOT Dead or at best NOT YET Illegal!!! Adults are responding in this post - EXCELLENT! Some are whining! ~2/3's overall per the poll still believe SOTH was disrespectful at some level.

POTUS did have a bit of a chip on his shoulder, for not shaking SOTH hand when extended.

Some seemed to forget former President Clinton's own avoidance of military service (aka deferments) as they excoriated Trump for his deferments - Humm?

The Congress & POTUS need to quit excessive Tweeting and GET TO WORK for "We the people...." Cut the BS!!!

All in All , instructive post! Of course some will defend POTUS regardless, others will defend SOTH regardless.

Some of the adults that responded slammed them both and provided balanced responses that took a deeper critical look! You know who you are! Thank you!

Background: By now the world is a buzz with what took place at the end of the SOTU by POTUS and the "ripping" by the SOTH at the end of the speech.

Discussion: While I can respect the opinion of Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia to recommend centure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPr2EodEAdU), I and many believe that the SOTH's behavior last night is worthy of the SOTH's own centure! The lack of leadership of the SOTH in the 'ripping up" of the SOTU address on live TV is shameful.

It makes NO different if you are RIGHT, CENTER or LEFT. The disrespect shown is not a sign of defiance of this POTUS or solidarity with her party. It is an open attack against "We the people....." As an Independent, I have not always agreed with POTUS on some issues, but that does not mean I will not show the Office of POTUS its proper due, regardless of who hold the office!

I have as does the SOTH the right to "respectfully disagree" as guaranteed under the 1st Amendment; however, as the SOTH the "ripping behavior" boarders on behaviors that reminds me of someone desiring to insight insurrection, but not be held accountable for the actions they transmit.

Recommendation: While the "majority members" of the House will not centure their own Speaker, perhaps the Senate might, in order to send a message to centure the SOTH for such a tantrum during the SOTU!

So my question is this:

Was the behavior of the SOTH a sign that the current SOTH as of Feb 2020 lacks both the maturity and leadership grit to behave in a manner worthy of that office as 3rd in line to be POTUS?

These last few years has shown a decrease of professional conduct starting from the top, so this is not a surprise. Does not the leadership at the top reflect the "conduct" of most of the troops in your unit? Well this is not any difference. Trump finished speaking and she tore up the paper. At least she did not do it while he was talking. We need a fresh state of conduct and people within the next year.

The SOTH tried to be cordial and POTUS snubbed her. SOTH was try to be a bridge builder at least for the SOTU but was pretty much treated like someone who didn't matter. If we condone that sort of actions from the POTUS then why should we get our panties in a twist when the SOTH does something similar. I know I have seen people say she should be locked up for destruction of government property ut it was her copy of the speech not the official record copy.

With all due respect, Chief, your premise is ridiculous. Let's focus on the real outrage: locking children in cages, lying 16,000+ to the American public, disgusting disrespect to women, minorities, our active duty military and veterans, other countries, etc. The list is long and shameful.
Please get real, folks. While I didn't like what Nancy Pelosi did, it is not something for which any serious person would ever recommend censure. POTUS just escaped justice in the Senate because of 52 cowardly Senators who put their allegiance to a President who would be King above their oath before God, to support and defend the Constitution, and our country.
Do me a favor, though: if you want to censure the Speaker for this petty, albeit relatively benign, act, please admit that our president needs to be censured - OFTEN - for his many offenses and crimes. There is no other way to argue the point of censuring Speaker Pelosi, which is IMO, killing an ant with a sledgehammer.

If no one cared about being right, center or left then ALOT of actions would have been called inappropriate and unite everyone in the name of decency. What happened has a history of disrespect from this individual. Looking for power because of self interest isn't just a party issue but a woman wanting to be the first woman to attain the power of the gavel. Watching expressions on the face of this person speaks volumes of her attitude. I saw her when she was presented the gavel and it made me sick. Her look of triumph instead of humility and the way she caressed that symbol of authority was nauseating to say the least. School yard behavior of the women who fawn over her, dressing all alike to stand out as standing up for something that is far more reaching than they are capable of understanding and destaining the individual women that stand for true growth in our country. Nancy's actions since she returned to the speaker's position is just another of a set of vivid examples of why the Washington establishment (both the left and right) is no longer capable and/or to be trusted to serve and protect a nation of truly free people. Donald J. Trump's often repeated promise to return power to the people and clean up the swamp is akin to a lighted match held above an open container of gasoline. What most politicians (specifically those elected to Congress) have never been willing to truly admit/comply is that they are not elected to be leaders. The Speaker and the President both have issues with each other. This is a poorly kept secret. We can go years and years on who was in the right or wrong, but I believe that there were classier methods to show defiance. Our forefathers weren't ripping up speeches, they MADE them. They spoke with eloquence, passion, and reason without sinking to a petty level. Neither the President, who frequently uses insults and put-downs, nor the Speaker, who does exactly the same, have done that. To me, both sides are acting like kids and it makes the rest of us look bad.

I am of the opinion that Pelosi is guilty of the crime of willfully destroying official documents. That she did it is indisputable. The only element of proof in question is the characterization of the document. Was it an “official document”? I say yes. POTUS is constitutionally required to submit an annual report to Congress on the state of the union. A speech is not required. I have heard arguments that what he handed Pelosi was just a “courtesy copy” of the speech and therefore not an official document. Does anyone really believe Trump went out of his way to do Nancy a courtesy? If so, why give one to Pence? Pence unquestionably knew what was in it and I’d bet dollars to donuts he sat through one or more rehearsals. So whats the point of going through the motion of handing Pence a courtesy copy? So if not a courtesy copy, what was it that Trump handed over? Was it the official report? One copy handed to the Senate and the other to the House? I think so. The only person who can really answer that is Trump and he made clear when he said that Nancy, by tearing up the document, broke the law. My guess is that if Trump had not handed her that report, Nancy would be demanding impeachment for failure to render the constitutionally required report. That said, we know she won’t be prosecuted. We only prosecute the little people for that sort of stuff. But she should be punished in some way, if only by censure.

We need people in charge of this country who are willing to try to work together regardless of personal feelings for the other. Tearing up POTUS's speech just to prove a point is childish and a slap in the face to all who were mentioned in the speech. It just shows that the Democrats are willing to hurt the American people rather than find compromising ground with the President. I for one do not want that kind of leader in charge of choices that can affect my future or my children's future.

I find it funny that 70% of the people in this forum think that what Nancy did was somehow bad, and yet the president knowingly, willingly, and with malice of forethought asked a foreign agency to act on his behalf to win the election.

Considering how the two branches of our Federal Govt seem to be behaving, the efforts to castigate whomever just wastes their and our energies. Though both a bit irritated and bemused, I frankly could care less. I’m rather more concerned with the plunge our markets are taking and the mammoth businesses cutting orders from suppliers. It’s also.a perfect storm hitting Boeing now having to cut at lest 10 percent in employees- Max issues and now negative sales of orders of planes other than the Max.

Nancy and torn paper vis a vis Donald’s actions pale in comparison.

It was just a show. The refusal to shake hands, ripping up the speech, it was all just a show to get the rubes riled up. Nothing more. A whole bunch of people fell for it, most likely the people who think their vote means something.

As soon as we had a representative shout, "You Lie" during Obama's SOTU, we opened the door for this. At the time Republicans were falling over themselves to defend the statement. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, suddenly it's a problem. Myself and many others warned people at the time this is where we were going. Well how does everyone like it?

Let's understand something here. Now that the president of the United States of America has officially been acquitted, I have the following things to say about this ordeal. To the members of the GOP, every single one of you, are COWARDS, TRAITORS, CORRUPT, COMPROMISED, PIECES OF TRASH, SCUM, etc. You chose to acquit this president, who beyond a shadow of doubt, BROKE THE LAW when he gave the order to freeze the money going to Ukraine. You chose to acquit this president despite the fact the Office of Management and Budget, and the Government Accountability Office stated that this president’s actions were indeed ILLEGAL.

Because of the actions you have chosen, the following events have transpired. First, your vote to acquit this president has allowed himself, and every president AFTER him to be ABOVE THE LAW. No longer can the words of Richard Nixon be used to describe how the people of this Country should function under the rule of law. The president should now be considered to be in the same realm as a Monarch, however, if you think I will ever call this so-called president” your majesty”, you are sorely mistaken. Second. When you acquitted this president, you failed to realize that when the president violated the Impoundment Control Act, he also gave every single member of the Legislative Branch the finger. Under the Impoundment Control Act, if the president is ever to intervene in the issuing of funds from Congress to a designated entity, the president has to inform Congress of his intentions. This is something he clearly did not do. Yet despite this fact, you voted to acquit him. Third, when you voted to acquit this president, you forever forfeited the ability to hold a SITTING PRESIDENT ACCOUNTABLE OF ANY WRONG DOING! Now that the current president is untouchable, the next president, and the one after, etc, will be as well. So let’s say, in the future, Hillary Clinton becomes president, and you go all out in your attempt to have her removed from office. You even go as far as to bring back previous cases from the dead(the emails, Benghazi, the server, Uranium One, all of which she was cleared of by the way). The end result will be that YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED!!! WHY? Because when you acquitted the current president, you also established a historical PRECEDENT that can and will be challenged in the Supreme Court if necessary.

Your decision to acquit this president set events in motion that either you failed to contemplate, or you simply do not care of any existing consequences. Whatever the case may be, understand that is far from over. The reason this president has been acquitted, is because every single member of the GOP has been in one way or another COMPROMISED by the NRA, the Russians, China, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and possible other organizations and Country’s persons like myself are not currently aware of. That and your COWARDICE allowed you to cringe in fear of the president, who is also a COWARD, a RACIST, a BULLY, and a NEOLITHIC INCOMPETENT DOTARD. Your actions on that day you decided to cast your vote to acquit this president DESTROYED DEMOCRACY to the tune of your THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE. Make no mistake, the AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL MAKE YOU PAY FOR THE ATROCITY YOU HAVE COMMITTED, SO HELP US GOD!!!!!

Look at SOTU 2020 (2:18 to 2:20) again. It appears to me that, as POTUS hands the folder to VP and SOTH, he sees her hand extended but ignores it. Maybe another “first” for this President.

It also appears to me that, unlike his two previous SOTU speeches (and those of Presidents before him), he did not extend his hand to the VP or SOTH. The VP, likewise, did not extend his hand to POTUS, as though he knew beforehand that POTUS was going to withhold the handshake.

That left SOTH to extend her hand and be visibly snubbed by POTUS in front of the full Congress, guests, and the Nation. I don’t believe for one minute that the snub was an oversight on the part of POTUS. And it set the tone and stage for SOTH’s action at the end.

Overall, I think there is enough childishness going on in Washington for everyone to take some credit.
