I remember the TV series growing up. The Final Frontier. Plus, Scottie's name on the show was Montgomery Scott, so I had to like him. My brother and I played with wooden phasers when we were 8 or 10.

They are both great Sci-Fi series. Star Trek for the hope of the Future. And Star Wars for the fantasy of a Galaxy Far Far Away.

Each one carries with it fascinating stories that tickle the imagination. I am not defending J.J. Abrams, but personally, I am not really holding my breath for this next Star Wars movie. Especially when Disney is calling the shots now.....

I have been watching Trek since it first aired. The new movies opens it up to a whole new series if they wanted to. I expect to see several new movies though. Also if you look at the technology in the original series and look at what we have now you will see a lot of it coming true. One scientist once said "Todays science fiction is tomorrows science fact". So now we have cell phones and talking computers. Live long and prosper.

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca. I grew up in the male dominated culture and generation of the Original Star Trek and the Original Battlestar Galactica . . . both of which had as their premise the old western series "Wagon Train to the Stars" where men were the action figures and women were merely supporting characters. As these series evolved in future incarnations (Star Trek in the Ghetto <Deep Space Nine> and Battlestar Galactica with James Almos) together with Babylon 5 and Firefly they became more philosophical, more broadly representative of diverse cultures and races, and far less misogynistic . . . so I liked them more for the purpose they served of providing more science, technology, engineering, and mutually supportive role models for children and younger men and women. Still, even in their original incarnations, they inspired thought and hope outside the cultural, resource, political, and opportunity limitations of the 1960s & 1970s. Warmest Regards, Sandy

p.s. For those who love deeply thoughtful and original conceptual Sci Fi the original Twilight Zone & Outer Limits cannot be beat. I will say the more modern Eureka (Mayberry RFD meets DARPA / General Dynamics) was funny and entertaining . . . though not so deeply political.

Trekkie for Life, it was the ground breaking first and THE game in town prior to 1977 - It was in reruns on channel 56 out of Boston, and I have been watching it since I was 8. I and my kids do live in both universes but the earth-based human story of Trek is what makes it "real" for me.

When I was a kid I was a "trekkie", I even went to conventions and met Q from the next generation in the bathroom after the event. It took me going to middle school to quickly realize that Start Wars is more socially acceptable for some unknown reason. So long story short I'm a Star Wars guy.

I love both actually a huge fan of Sci Fi (BSG (all), Far Scape, Buck Rogers, Babylon 5, Red Dwarf, Firefly... there are too many to mention and these are just the ones in space... If we included Earth based (Brisco County JR, Star Gate...) we would need a whole new website...

Star Wars all the way. I have even had my kids watch the original trilogy and when they asked if there were any more... I tried to lie. But ultimately, I let them watch episodes I, II, and III. Episode VII is highly anticipated by my kids.

I freely visit both universes. Growing up, I watched a lot of Star Trek. I learned that you should never wear a red shirt and that the alien hotties can only be seduced by one James Tiberius Kirk. When Star Wars was released, I was down at the theater ready to buy my ticket. I learned from Luke about the importance of knowing the cute girl's father before trying to make out with her ( this is a good idea, even if it turns out you aren't related ).

On a side note:
Q: If a squad of Storm Troopers and a squad of Red Shirts got into a fight, what would happen?
A: All the Storm Troopers would miss their targets, but the Red Shirts would still die.

I'm loving my Star Wars universe first and foremost MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca, but these new Star Trek movies are doing the Star Trek universe justice. The old 60's Treks that featured tribbles, the Gorn, and hot green women were way ahead of their time. Poor Gene Roddenberry had to use salt and pepper shakers as medical instrument props because their budget was non-existent. Rosa Parks refused to change seats, but Star Trek has the first interracial kiss on PRIMETIME! George Takei and Uhura were members of the command team when Hollyweird still preferred to make white actors look Asian (miserably).
Star Wars had Darth Vader and Stormtroopers...Tie Fighters and X-Wings...At 9 years of age, seeing Star Wars on the big screen was life changing. May the Force be with you! And if JJ ruins episode 7, there will be rioting in the streets. Seeing Jar Jar still gives me ulcers.

I grew up with both Star Trek and Star Wars.I am not thrilled with the direction that Star Trek has taken.I am not sure what is to become of Star Wars since now Disney has purchased the franchise.Its a wait and see.

I love both, but Star Trek would win out between the two. I started watching Star Trek with my parents when I was 4 or 5, and I believe it definitely influenced my love of space and desire to join the Navy. I can't drive spaceships, so navy ships is the next best thing.

I've always liked both, but it's of course a longer answer.

The original Star Wars trilogy (now known as 4-6) was by far the better. Why? Two reasons. First, friction. What do I mean? Life is messy, complicated, people have mixed motives, money matters, good intentions and bad execution. It's about as real as you can get with magic (the force). Second, Star Trek was too heavily politically/socially focused. Still good stories, especially as I watched them as a kid, but as an adult, the moralizing gets in the way of the yarn. Star Wars in also moralizes, but it does it in an entirely different - transparent and relevant to the central story way. (For the record, since I hear this about once a year, no the original Star Wars was not a allegory of Reagan/Bush, etc. It came out first.... just sayin')

However, the Star Trek reboot has answered my criticisms above quite well. The Star Wars new trilogy (i.e. 1-3) suck .... well, let's just leave it at they suck. As do the re-releases. Just for the record, Han shot first, and it makes a difference to the whole character's development.

Conspicuously missing from the list are Firefly (the best in the history of ever) and BSG (first OK, reboot in a tie with Firefly). Both win because of great story lines, engaging universe, engaging characters, and friction.

I love both. I grew up watching Star Trek with my Father. Star Wars was another movie we got the who family together to watch. I'm looking foreword to the new Star Wars coming out. Not sure if it can be as god as the originals but it might come close. Also, Star Trek, new movies were excellent and took a little different spin but I like them.

I still stand firm in the Star Wars universe but I am a huge fan of Star Trek. I wanted to share this bit of Star Trek AWESOMENESS however........

Gene spent his boyhood in Los Angeles, where he later studied three years of policemanship and then transferred his academic interest to aeronautical engineering and qualified for a pilot's license. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the fall of 1941 and was ordered into training as a flying cadet when the United States entered World War II. As a Second Lieutenant, Roddenberry was sent to the South Pacific where he entered combat at Guadalcanal, flying B-17 bombers out of the newly captured Japanese airstrip, which became Henderson Field. He flew missions against enemy strongholds at Bougainville and participated in the Munda invasion. He was decorated with the Distinguished flying Cross and the Air Medal.
It was while in the South Pacific, that Mr. Roddenberry began to write. He sold stories to flying magazines, and later poetry to publications, including The New York Times. He even wrote a song lyric "I Wanna Go Home", which became a popular song during the war.

Star Trek by far is more realistic. Plus I don't see a lot of brothers kissing their sisters! All aside, the Enterprise by far can destroy a fleet of battle cruisers. They did defeat the Borg!

Even though Star Trek came out before Star Wars, I was exposed to Star Wars first. I lived in the sticks and we only had a few channels, no Star Trek, no cable back then. So I have to say Star Wars is my first love. I remember going to the theater on opening day of the ORIGINAL Star Wars, back in 1977. No "stadium seating", but the screens were about five times larger than any that are in the theaters today. This was in Killeen, Texas. There were no other movies like it at the time and I found it so funny how, during the Death Star trench scene, people, in the audience, would instinctively sway side-to-side! Must have saw that movie 25 times that year in the theater. Good 'ol days!

Star Trek is great and all but one thing bothers me. There is a complete lack of enlisted personnel on the ship. And don't say redshirts, even those are ensigns. You know damn well. Commander LaForge isn't going to crawl into a Jeffrey's tube to fix anything. There will be a MWSC (SW) (machinist mate warp senior chief (space warfare)) that will tell DS1 (SW) (deflector shieldman 1st class(space warfare)) to get someone to fix the Jeffrey's tube. Then DS1 (SW) will tell DS3 to take a couple of guys to go clean the Jeffrey's tube. DS3 will grab SN and SA ( Spaceman and Spaceman Apprentice) from the Jeffrey's tube shack who will go try to clean the tube but fuck it up so that DS2 (SW) has to come fix it.

I like both shows, but Star Wars seems more likely than Star Trek. A society in which there is always a war somewhere in the galaxy and pretty much everyone is trying to kill you is more likely than a Utopian society where everyone has everything they need and just work to help out the few backwater places that are left.

Star Trek, There are good and evil places all over. Just like Star Trek, where in Star Wars is more like the Cold War. Two major players fighting with people that are just aligned with one or the other power.

This is an unfair question as the two take science fiction from a totally different standpoint. Star Wars is intended to be the fantasy side of Science Fiction taking influences from things such as 7 Samurai (which incidentally is an awesome movie despite having to read subtitles). Star Trek is more of the science part of Science Fiction.
I love Star Wars. It is my favorite place to escape when I just need to relax. I read the books, I listen to the movies, read the comics, and watch both Clone Wars and Rebels. It has become a part of who I am
I enjoy Star Trek, just to a much lesser degree.

If I had to choose, a Trekkie I be. It came out the year I was born. I was 10 when Star Wars came out and saw it ten times that first year. I watch them all, but somehow Star Trek seems to have that edge with me.

Star Trek is very unique because it has advanced technology, but the plot of each episode with its underlying moral theme is more significant than the technology used. The episode I remember where this was especially strong, was the one where there was this very powerful conflict between two aliens. Both were black and white, but one was black on left and white on right, and the other alien's coloring was just the opposite. The plot concentrated on each one's prejudices towards the other due to the color scheme each one had. It made their attitudes seem so petty and rediculous while Capt. Kirk worked very hard to resolve their feud.

I live in both but am devoted to Star Trek having grown up with it. Star Trek had more than just political messages, it had morality, values, diversity (before it became a buzz word).
