I am looking at trying to improve section morale without implementing an activity outside work that would require financial obligations from the Soldiers....Ideas? Suggestions?

Hahahaha!
Maybe a section breakfast or some sort of PT competition. This morning my section did a conditioning foot march. To motivate my guys to push their selves, I told them who ever beat the old man (me) back could have the rest of the day off. only one beat me. He got the rest of the day off. The guys who didn't beat me started working together on devising a plan on how to do it next time. Good PT and it brought the guys together. That's short term though. The best way to improve morale is through shared hardship. Find a common interest or goal and have them start working toward that. The bottom line is they will feed off of your motivation and example. Good luck.

SFC Watson, I have used several things like that, also a platoon cook out. Also I have used the PL/PSG for a day, where they can be the leader, but they also see the things we have to do behind the scenes.

Thanks. There's a lot of good ideas in there. Although none of these guys would 'get off' on motivation through PT, the breakfast idea is a good one and I think if used maybe once a month in lieu of PT (which they don't want to do anyway) it would be a great start.
Later on, as the team grows, incorporating some of those PT challenges would be a great thing too. Thanks for your input.
I had that issue in my last unit and the CDR and myself implemented a PT program where everyone got together and we did challenging PT. Things like races and competition building events. Those events helped to bring the unit together.

There is nothing wrong with friendly competition! Shared hardships win or lose, one common goal encouraging teamwork. You're only as strong as your weakest link.
